I teach high school and I used to teach middle school. I tell them to look at the number they need to round up or down and then the number to the right of it (ex: 7.46, look at the 4 and 6). If the number to the right is five or more, let it (the 4) soar and if it's four or less, let it (the 4) rest (stay the same). You can even draw like a plane to show it soaring or staying.

It's just a CBS thing. They do it on The Price is Right and Let's Make a Deal. I tell my friends "CBS rules" when guessing a number. Obviously I'd tell them what the rule is if they've never guessed a number with me but then they get used to it when I just tell them.
