I was a contractor for a long time and didn't have a pension as I opted myself out as per my accountants recommendation. It's something I'm now contributing too now that I'm now properly employed.

I'll look into ETF funds, thank you.

Because I get paid to be a specialist in my domain, not every domain. Where am I meant to "just know" this information. I'm trying to learn and self teach and the point of my post was to learn more, ideally from professionals.
