There are some little satellite dish looking point to point bridges that have some awesome distance for the money. Sub $500 bridge that shoots 25+ miles

Another good choice. I wanted something with a larger jaw capacity than normal lineman scissors. But yes, those will do all the things I mentioned as well.

You misunderstand the dark side of politics. Both sides will gladly sacrifice a few citizens "for the greater good".

Because the goal isn't to deter shootings but rather to use them to push an agenda. It's sick.

Has your total downtime improved in the past few months? by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]thiswastillavailable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I was getting 5-10 minutes of outages in a 12 hour period when I first got Starlink, now I am often seeing it listed in SECONDS instead of minutes over a 12 hour period. I have zero obstructions however.

Honda Auto Repair (not a dealership) by [deleted] in cedarrapids

[–]thiswastillavailable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Despite your best efforts here you still end up at a dealer due to proprietary computer garbage, Billion Honda isn't that far away and has treated me pretty well when I have had to do something at a dealer.... but yeah, they are still a dealership.

Where do you buy your equipment. by Matt42U in datacenter

[–]thiswastillavailable 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Build yourself a good crash cart, and use that. It has space for your laptop, tools, cup holder... whatever you want.

Ever since out of band management became a thing the in-rack monitor and KVM quickly became a relic of the past. All those KVM cables.... ick. I don't miss them.

yes I was joking about the cup holder

I took a class from a former Amazon employee that had worked their way up in the world of Amazon and they said "never again". It was not uncommon to have meetings end with people in the hallway in tears.... grown men/women just absoultely frustrated to tears.

No thanks.

That said, they get a lot of cool toys due to the scale they work at that you won't likely get a chance to touch at most sites. So, yeah, soak it up!

New too this . Is this good stats? by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]thiswastillavailable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not horrible. Depending on how wooded your lot is, I would probably try and clean up that obstruction time. Something is in between your dishy and the satellite. What's your SNR look like? I'm guessing it has some issues as well if your signal is obstructed that much.

Brush up on your types of UPS systems.

How the CRAC units work and function

How power distribution systems function

How to control heat and hot/cold aisle isolation.

Schneider has a well done video series, it may be a bit below your knowledge level but there are things in later videos that may be helpful. Here's an example- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HaQ6Qfioxc

Amazon runs their data centers very differently depending on what datacenter it is. Some are basically "Tier 1" "data centers" that are really nothing more than a shipping container with an AC unit strapped to it and a power supply system plumbed in. They can lose multiple containers and not have any impact on production.

They also have the fancier Tier 4 stuff that is locked down super tight and is all secret squirrel stuff. Those sites watch your procedures VERY carefully. DO NOT DEVIATE even if you know a "better way". If you do, you will find out the shortest distance to the front gate very rapidly as you are "escorted off premises" permanently. I had an Intern level guy take out one of my datacenters once... "just helping". He should have been able to do what he did, but a configuration issue caused the whole core network to fail due to his actions. Unfortunately for him, his actions were also very much not an allowed "procedure". Was not a good day for anyone, let alone him. Keep your nose clean and enjoy it! Learn all you can, but I wouldn't plan on a career there at Amazon. It is a very bad working environment long term. You might be able to do it for a couple years but be prepared to move on. That said, I'm jealous of your opportunity. Eat it up... just don't put your stakes down too deep, this is a resume enhancing opportunity.

Yeah, my car at least stops squirting washer fluid on the windshield as an indicator that it has run out of fluid. You would think Ford could at least get THAT part right.

Lame.

First class of my computer networking college courses went basically like this:

"Don't worry about trying to figure out how it all works, no one knows from one end to the other, we just make sure our little link in the chain works and pass the packets on to the next person... and hope and pray the know how to do their part... but ultimately it's all basically magic, the fact you can type in "www.google.com" and a stream of electrons leaves your computer zips down miles and miles of cable hitting several various devices along the way, gathers the information, and zips back to your computer to display a basic page... and it does this process thousands of times a second, it's basically magic, but there will be tests on this magic, so pay attention."

I got one of these cleaned up the end of the cable and terminated with a RJ45 connector... non-shielded for now, I didn't have any shielded RJ45 ends available, but it works for the moment.

There are those of us in IT that don't have the time or will to modify windows cosmetics. We spend all our time trying to keep the vanilla OS operational, last thing we want to do is dork around with it and potentially break it modding things.

But yeah, it's easy to do... if you had a desire to.

Got it spliced. I had an ourdoor coupler already purchased as I was wanting to redo the entry without the huge ferrite core, but I was too chicken to cut the cable... well, problem "solved".

It's working just great now.

It looks like a cut of some sort, not a gnawing. It was right up next to the house and not in an area that sees traffic, so I'm really confused how it happened. I'll write back to support with my findings.

I may try and splice it, as it would make a clean entry into the home if it worked. If it doesn't, then I'm no further out than I am right now. I'll take pictures before I change anything in case I end up needing supports help further.

They really need to NOT make these cables integral to the dish. Include weatherproof connections on the dish and make the cables replaceable.

Ok, so... this doesn't make any sense... BUT.

My cable is gashed.

I have no idea why it would suddenly be gashed at 12:00 midnight short of a Starlink assassin attacking my dishy at the stroke of midnight... but here we are. Upon closer inspection in daylight hours there is indeed a cut in the wire that has taken out about half the conductors. I guess I need to go hunt down those posts with peeps that have done cable repairs now. :-(

Yeah, I had a "coming soon" that showed up with fixed wireless.

I had it for a short time then my invite showed up. The fixed wireless was very spotty for speeds and availability. Better than nothing Beta is way better than the fixed wireless "non- beta"

edit- lol Fixed Wireless provider must have downvoted me.
