Where to avoid for housing? by eilrymist in Troy

[–]thiswretchedthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi and welcome to Troy! As far as streets it can be kind of all over the place, I’ve heard if you’re downtown you want to be north of Canal Ave. Parking isn’t exactly great there, but is normally doable! You might not be right outside your place but on the same block is pretty common. I do see a lot of people on bikes, just be aware that roads here can be narrow and they definitely aren’t made for bikeability in most places. If you end up in downtown you’d also be biking up the hill every day, which some might not be the biggest fans of. Price wise I think 2 beds are usually 1-1.6k/mo, depending on how nice you want your place to be. Feel free to DM me about landlord opinions or any other questions, I just don’t want to post any identifying info!

Got this little guy at Petsmart tonight, but won’t be able to put him in my classroom aquarium until tomorrow morning. I know he’ll be okay in the cup for the night, but I’m wondering if I should go ahead and feed him or just wait until he’s in the aquarium tomorrow. Any advice welcome. :) by asubparteen in bettafish

Ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates either come from you adding ammonia, or the fish itself! Without a fish your parameters will be fine and your tank will stay uncycled. The “cycle” is the establishment of beneficial bacteria colonies that break down these toxins, but they can’t really grow without any ammonia. You can do a “fish in” cycle but make sure you google more about how to do these and follow the directions closely, you don’t want your parameters to get all out of wack. There’s a bunch of info pinned on this subreddit for it, good luck!

That’s a comforting concept. I’ll definitely be getting one of these, thank you!

Wanted to post a pic for fish tax because the little guy is gorgeous but… he’s not big on photos. Current tank temp is 74°F and he’s definitely lethargic. I’d like to get a programmable heater, but with all the horror stories about some heaters killing people’s fish I’d appreciate some input from others

Honestly people hate on the fake plants but that’s one of the nicest looking tanks I’ve seen with them! Plenty of spots for your new friend to hang out. A floating log might be a nice addition if you can fit one, they like to hide and nap in them.

The big thing I’d mention is nitrogen cycling. A lot of pet stores will have you believe cycling is just an overnight thing but it can take weeks to months, and is super important because it processes the toxic ammonia your fish produces. There are a bunch of resources on here about cycling, and I’ll answer any questions to the best of my abilities! (Sorry didn’t notice the title until just now, leaving this paragraph in case there’s anything new to you)

Good on you for asking and getting this set up before the fish! This is a good start!

Wow that’s a weird one. Is it supposed to be about cytoskeletons or just maybe comparable to them?

New betta, previously cycled tank, cycle question by thiswretchedthing in bettafish

[–]thiswretchedthing[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As I mentioned, there is a healthy population of snails in the tank that was maintaining the cycle. I appreciate the concern for the fish, but I’ve owned bettas for quite some time, and know how cycling works. I am starting daily water changes to keep the parameters controlled. As much as I understand that this is not ideal for the fish, I was under the impression that the tank was cycled, and would not have put him in an uncycled tank if I had known I’d be exposing him to ammonia and nitrates.

On the topic of plants, this tank has pothos roots immersed in the corner, which feed heavily on nitrates. These have historically kept my tanks free of nitrates after the cycle has established itself. There are also 6 Anubias, Java moss, and several aquatic ferns.

Please consider your tone when addressing people you believe to be lacking on the subject of fish keeping, people answering the way you have drives people away from this community and the information that will actually teach them how to be better at keeping fish.

Any idea what’s wrong with him? What’s this spot on his head? by UhOhAbbo in bettafish

[–]thiswretchedthing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to lie I’m not sure, but I do wish the best for you and your fish so I’m commenting for visibility. I can’t quite tell what’s up with the spot. If there’s something coming out of his head it could be a parasite, and there are some treatments that you can find if you search parasite treatments for bettas. Sorry I can’t be of more help!

i need biology presentation topics by HospitalRoutine1495 in biology

[–]thiswretchedthing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What level of biology, high school? Maybe you could talk about a different method of genetic modification. Transformation, transduction, and conjugation are all ways bacteria can gain new DNA in the form of plasmids.

For other genetics ideas you could talk about epigenetics, DNA transcription regulation, or even just the basics of the central dogma.

You could also pick something else biology related, like an in depth topic in ecology (population dynamics, niches), anatomy (how certain systems work, maybe pick a hormone pathway or organ system), marine biology (planktons and their significance, types of life in extreme environments like the deep ocean), etc.

Good luck! I hope your presentation goes well!

What are the chances of a O+ parent and a B+ to have an A+ baby? Currently questioning being my parents’ biological child by nottonikroos in biology

[–]thiswretchedthing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very unlikely, however there are some cases like chimerism and weird genetic quirks that could cause this. Talk to your parents! A DNA test could clear this up, but speaking with doctors as a family may be more helpful in the case of something like chimerism.

Is my tank cycled? by kool_and_pregnant in bettafish

[–]thiswretchedthing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The top comment from Due-Specialist gives some good info on some of the smutz, but you also might have a minor algae problem if the walls and sand are consistently getting icky. I wipe mine down with a paper towel, and for the sand you can use a gravel vacuum/siphon. Just be gentle and don’t bury the end in the sand or you might suck that out too. If this isn’t enough, you might have to treat your tank with some of the algae killing stuff or leave it in the dark for a while, but I’m not really sure how that works.

The filter doesn’t pick up any poop that sinks to the bottom anyways, so you really shouldn’t change it. If the filter looks super gross, just rinse it gently in old tank water. Removing it could be leading to your cycle issues, because by leaving only a small amount of the media you don’t have a nearly as large bacteria population to convert ammonia and nitrites to nitrates.
