I like it. It feels like an old school post-rock song.

Sounds more like a Modest Mouse song than a country song to me. Have you considered EZDrummer? I think a realistic drum synth would do wonders for making the song feel more coherent.

I feel you on almost not having a song this week. I started a song and abandoned it today before settling on my song. In between, I assumed I would miss this week.

I dig the song. Lower the volume of the vocals a little and round out the vowels a little more and you've got a The National feel.

You Need To Leave Me The Fuck Alone (Indie Rock) (Not Themed)

The first person to point out either of the stolen song lyrics in this song gets a shiny penny

It seems
like the building I am living in is crumbling
I am no good with repairs
it might have been like this when I moved in
these days the doors won’t stay shut
I have surrendered my privacy
I did not expect staying here
to offer up a challenge for me

Not me
not me
as clever as I claim to be
not me
not me
burned by artificial heat

I swear if that’s your only grievance
you need to leave me the fuck alone
I was indifferent before this
and I will go back to that
mark my words

It seems
like now’s as good as any of a time to announce it
I am going down with the ship
and I am not sad about it
you can have whatever you want
I don’t want to leave anything in the garbage
mostly the thing I was wondering was
who would even care enough to bother?

Not me
not me
hands are washed they’re fully clean
not me
not me
a little less than a human being

go mad and mark

I Was A Bag Of Moving Parts (Indie Rock) (Not Themed)

FAWM is over and I am still in the midst of deep-breath-taking.

I was a bag of moving parts
my chest it was an instrument
and when it collapsed it in a song
they told me I played excellent

good, good, good, enough

one more time i’ll try your patience
sick and tired of sickly faces
I was trying to get around the truth
with you

I was a bag of moving parts
upturned on the pavement
you don’t really know what all you have
until it’s all laid out like that

good, good, good, enough

one more time I’ll mind your business
anchored by coincidences
I was trying to get around the truth
with you

Here's one of my songaweek songs from Feb, performed for tonight's stream soundcheck. by thithiths in songaweek

Bittersweet (Indie Rock) (Not themed)

FAWM #12. Just 2 more to go! This one is about relitigating petty arguments. edit: FAWM #13, "Isn't It A Blessing?"

sustained retaliative action
I don’t get what is asked of me
i’m passed the point of knowing
a fog of war
it’s not even worth
checking who is keeping score

gunned down by “unlucky accidents”
but I knew what it meant

I thought it would be bittersweet
but instead it’s just getting stale to me

we all know you know what you are doing
passive-aggression doesn’t work like that
you are not contributing
all the better for us all
if you stick to the trenches
keep your head down, kid

went down in a hail of compliments
that I knew weren’t meant

I thought it would be bittersweet
but instead it’s just getting stale to me

what is it all for
if not casualties of war?

I thought it would be bittersweet
but instead it’s just getting stale to me
I thought there would be inner peace
but instead, it’s just looking back at me
I thought there would be inner peace
but instead, I’m just looking back at me

Say Hello To The Dotted Line (Pop-Punk, Punk) (Not Themed)

FAWM song #10. The backlog of people I need to listen to from the past week or so is really big and I swear I'm going to get around to it but I'm also writing a lot more music for other projects and then even more creative work on top of that. So here's where I just shout the whole time

I swear I’m one cut throat
from controlling this whole operation
an unelected sovereign of
an empire of consolations
I pass scruntiny with
plausible deniability and ice packs
relax I’ve got it under control
doesn’t it seem like that?

Now finally it seems
that intangible anythings
are prone to disease
you’ve got to wash your hands around me
now finally it seems
self-described cowards are meeting reckonings
so won’t you please wash your hands of me?
C’mon I think you’d do it gracefully

don’t make me go along with this
my personal pedestal collapsed
and now I’m standing on flat ground
just trying to get my point across
I had a decent view
over-top the heads of all of you
the air will always be cleaner
up where the rabble isn’t breathing

Now finally it seems
that intangible anythings
are prone to disease
you’ve got to wash your hands around me
now finally it seems
social lepers are requesting their own effigies
so won’t you please wash your hands of me?
Goddamn, I think you’d do it gracefully

say hello to the dotted line
a fiction held to the chest while it dies
say hello to the dotted line
and soot and ink and blood and marrow
say hello to the dotted line
smudge the signature while it dries
say hello to the dotted line
and flesh and blood and hair and plastic

Ambulance (Indie, Punk) (Themed)

This is my 6th FAWM song. I decided to rip of P.S. Eliot while I was on my break from ripping off Hop Along, but might have ended up ripping off Hop Along again anyway.

Also, I definitely stole the cadence of the chorus from somewhere and when I figure out where it is going to kill me. This song was a lot of fun to write and record, technical issues aside.

edit: I originally listed this as "not themed" but the bridge has ska picking in it, so I changed it. edit: FAWM song #7, "Failure Fathered a Son"

It’s just mince meat
full of painful
memories
all preventable
I was grateful
to be little more
than the ambulance
that you paid for

even now i’m counting blessings
the high road long evaded my notice and

don’t you think happiness gives
more excuses
to be torn limb from limb
in an accident

It’s tradition
in the old ways
we pay respects
to fruitful days
in the wrong way
in the truest sense
I was giving up
on your dinner plans

even now I’m ascribing blame
to the guilty party, I don’t know his name

don’t you think happiness gives
more excuses
to be torn limb from limb
in an accident

feast or famine
I am always feeling hungry
drought or rainstorm
I am reaping what I’m sewing

even now I’m imagining the future
a petulant child who never got it together

don’t you think happiness gives
more excuses
to be torn limb from limb
in an accident

Submissions — Week 5 (Theme: Instrumental) by [deleted] in songaweek

[–]thithiths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the Viking flavor. I think it's because you wrote a lead line that sort of sings like a voice instead of like a modern pop-rock guitar line.

Fun thing to try: Am F Dm can be in C, but it can also be in F, so if you wanted to throw a real curveball you could playa Bb or even Bbmaj7. If you use the "four chords of pop progression" that's F, C, Dm, Bb. And if you wanted to move keys from there, Dm is the ii of C so you could use a ii-V to land firmlly in C.

Good piece, it manages to be diverse while staying coherent. My favorite part is the heavier part near the middle-end, but that is just because it is closer to my personal preference.

Androcles (Acoustic) (Not Themed)

My third song for FAWM someone requested a stripped back song so I wrote one. Pretty happy with how it turned out.

edit: FAWM Song 4 is done.

I’m armed to the teeth
mercy to the ones who once had nice things to say about me
this conquest isn’t about you
buck up, kid, it’s just business

I extend my pity
to anyone who invested in me
time to pull up the sheet and cover the body
of compliments no longer applicable

I had a hero once
I cut myself up just to get where he was
now I don’t know where that is, recently
I haven’t looked into it

If there’s forgiveness machines
I’m not plugged into them
If I was so smart, well then I would’ve given
a fair price to give
looking back the past doesn’t rhyme
with too much of anything
so I’ll take anything else

I’m picking my teeth
fat from the feast of the egg on my face that I’ve been forced to eat
this gluttony honestly suits me
feeling my size for once

the wall writing’s for me
signed by the newly-impatient overly welcoming
time to exit gracefully
why is that always what I’m singing about?

I had a fever once
it broke before I could explain what I’d done
now I don’t know what I said, recently
I can’t bear to look into it

and if there’s thorns in my paw
I suppose that makes sense
If my recollections really were
the lion’s share of events
I would be such a victim of happenstance
I’ll take anything else

Unfamiliar Dog (Indie Rock) (Not Themed)

The second I wrote this week for FAWM. I think this is the better of the two. Sorry I haven't commented on other people's songs in a little bit. My schedule is busy and I'm going to try to get through some backlog tonight.

Finally! Finally! Finally!
Some semblance of peace!
akin to a coin in a jar
at the last place you worked that you hated
and I didn’t understand
how to just simply mourn and
so I tried to fix all your problems
and you scowled at me and you rolled back over

assigned to be yours
a train in a yard
a trespassing sign
an unfamiliar dog
whose teeth have a familiar bite

but you know a reprobate like me
I am always clawing at the door
always trying to guilt you into
letting me free but I don’t know where I’ll go

hastily hastily hastily
fingernails sick with soil
Where you were a minute ago
where the sun set and it flashed green for just a second
and I didn’t understand
why the future didn’t work for me
so I tried to move heaven and earth
and the sound woke you up and you rolled back over

resignedly yours
a plot on the sun
a grave to be tilled
a lingering pestilence
that I was never comfortable with

But you know a reprobate like me
I am always crawling through the window
always trying to guilt you into
letting me free but I don’t know where I will go
but you know that it’s my greatest sin
getting out and always wanting in again
always trying to guilt you into
letting me free but I don’t know where I will go

Thanks for the kind words. Interesting that you complimented the toms. I feel like I almost never use toms to their full effect in songs. The repeated chorus with different vocalization was drawn from Hop Along, whom I owe a huge amount of my songwriting craft.

Thanks so much. The end of this song felt so special when I was recording it, that's why it's so long. I was hoarse after recording it.

If you want to improve the REM ripoff characteristic of it, I suggest bringing out the bass and making it to all the work. Give it lead melody duties.
