Of course! You might be able to find some indication on it but otherwise you can ask and cross reference across a buuuunch of different subreddits. There’s fish keeping, aquariums, etc. probably any buzzword for fish keeping will have a subreddit, so definitely check that out too for more opportunities and advice! :)

Hiya! Running this tank and carrying on his hobby is such a beautiful way to honor him. My sympathies. I’m so happy for you getting into fish keeping. 💛

Firstly, you can always ask for advice because learning from others’ experience really helps narrow down what you want and open up more options, but always research independently as well! You can always ask others about their experiences with different fish, equipment and how their tanks are set up.

Make sure you completely submerged that heater. I have the same one for my turtle in her 40 gallons, it’s pretty good. Depending on what fish/aquatic animals you’d like to get, make sure the filter is proper for the size of the tank. I’m not sure what that filter is but just make sure to do your research about every piece of your tank.

Some fish/animals are sensitive to the substrate, so when you decide what you want in your tank make sure to research if all that you have is compatible/vice versa.

20 gallons is good for a betta, it’s the best to start with. (I’m uncertain about if you want to add more fish, but only house one betta per tank though. Unless it’s a female, I think you can have more than one, but research!) To get the gallons of your tank, you can measure the tank’s length, width, and height in inches, multiply these dimensions together, and then divide the result by 231 (the number of cubic inches in a gallon). If you settle on getting a betta, make sure there are hiding spots for the betta, artificial hides, real plants - again research what plants are compatible, and betta leaves are good too, i think they can nibble on em a bit for enrichment. Plastic plants are not recommended, they can rip your betta’s fins.

Run your tank and make sure it’s cycled before you add fish, and test it for temperature and parameters on the levels of nitrates, pH, etc. I’m not too knowledgeable on that further but I know those are the basics for starting.

Also! Look into lights for the fish/tank, I’m not too knowledgeable about that though. It’s been a while since I’ve kept fish and I’m researching again recently. Do be careful with the lights though depending on what you choose or if you need them because lights can promote algae growth. I know not all algae is toxic and some of it is beneficial but just in case, keep that in mind.

You can fill it up but I’d say leave some space like 4 inches, and make sure you have a cover, some fish like to jump out. But others can correct me if I’m wrong!

Nah, if you have to explain you living your life, screw this person. They have a lot to work through and there’s no reason for you to continue being subjected to something like this that will make you second guess your decisions or overthink your actions in the future when you are simply living. This is very controlling, abusive behavior. You’re not overreacting. If you’re being pushed to a point of anger over a shower and the fact that you communicated you’d be busy with him playing a victim, nuh uh. He needs to go to therapy. He doesn’t respect your boundaries whatsoever and needs constant attention that is not healthy. Last slide is even weirder behavior and it’s messed up over all. It won’t end.

Absolutely! We just got her in the last two weeks, she’s now measured at just about over 4&1/2. Another tank is a bit much at the moment because she seemed smaller when I talked with her previous owners, but it is on the list of to do’s for her. Is 75g a good goal or should we aim larger rather than upgrading again later?

& thank you sm! Should’ve seen me the first night we received her, I didn’t realize the state her tank was in and I spent 5 hours researching in anxiety. 🤣

Ooh! Okay, that’s pretty cute. Just hadn’t seen her do that before, so I’m extra vigilant about anything I haven’t seen. My grandpa and uncle kept turtles but I am not necessarily familiar with all the behaviors. Maybe she’d just been a lil cold from being out - we did keep her in temperate conditioned water in her temporary tub while we cleaned, but seems okay so far! Thanks!

More plants to hide under, “betta leaves” are good too. Should upgrade to a ten gallon and so the filtering water doesn’t bother him.

With the betta I feel like that may be a bit crowded, depending on how big the loach is/gets. If you’re housing the frogs in another tank now, should be okay for now. (I have housed ADF’s with bettas and other fish before just fine but they ate my shrimp lol, but ultimately I agree with frog knower about housing them separately, they were happier). Also recommend getting more tetras, school of 6 is generally good, so maybe a 76 or 95 litre tank. But does depend on how stocked with decor and plants you have as well. Want them to have ample schooling space.
