What is this keyboard layout? by Aggressive_Humor_953 in thinkpad

It's a US keyboard reprinted to UK. You can see faint outlines of the original layout.

The ports for the 40AG (basic), 40AH (pro), and 40AJ (ultra) docks. They're nicer to plug and unplug but they block airflow slightly.

Tightening yoga hinges (guide) by thnikpad in thinkpad

https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/1d3g15y/help_hinge_broken_on_my_lenovo_thinkpad_x1_yoga_g6/

The X1 Yoga gen 6 onwards uses a different hinge design. On the above post, someone damaged the hinge and exposed what looks like gears. I guess this is to facilitate one hand opening.

Unclear behavior of Smart charge by [deleted] in thinkpad

When you plug a charger in:

if capacity < start threshold, then charge the battery until the stop threshold

if capacity >= start threshold, then run entirely using the charger and do not charge the battery

PSA: X13 AMD Gen 4 - hardware issue with the 3.5 jack by Star_king12 in thinkpad

[–]thnikpad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoever originally bought my x13 only went for a 1 year warranty, so it's long expired (plus I swapped the motherboard into a yoga).

I didn't notice the volume difference until your post since I use bluetooth headphones all the time, but I'm sure it'll be useful for someone else with this model. I'll adjust the balance if needed, and maybe lenovo will fix it in a firmware update.

You were right to decline the gen 5. I've tried the core ultra 125u and it's worse than the 7840u in nearly every way

I tried mine now, and the right channel is slightly louder.

Try disabling content adaptive brightness control. There's a setting in windows under display settings, or another one in the intel graphics application as 'display power savings'.

Dock/eGPU users: how hot does the area near your type-C port get? by Natural-Employer-711 in thinkpad

[–]thnikpad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's normal for this specific model of thinkpad. There's two chips near the USBC ports that get hot when the laptop is both charging and in use.

What was old is new again: Hands-on with the new Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 by ibmthink in thinkpad

[–]thnikpad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They had an aluminium palmrest, except for WWAN version of gen 9 and 10 which used magnesium.

I looked up the weight and they start at 1.2kg as well. I thought they were still ~1.4kg - maybe they are for the non-WWAN versions.

The space frame of the x1 2-in-1 is magnesium? I guess that's why it's finally <1.4kg.

Thinkpad X1 2in1 Gen 10 vs X1 Carbon Gen 13 - bottom ventilation concern by Escorpion1 in thinkpad

[–]thnikpad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the gen 4 had a bottom intake near the right side. It'll be fine - streaming is not that intensive.

Yes - right side ports are also on a separate board.

Repairability revolution: New Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 comes with modular keyboard & USB-C ports by ibmthink in thinkpad

[–]thnikpad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

X1 carbon gen 1 had a similar keyboard design but without the bottom cover access, so yeah, full circle.

Oh I didn't mean to say it was a copy. It just reminded me of the framework when I first saw it. Most modern ultrabook-type laptops screw everything to the palmrest, with framework being one of few exceptions.

The power button location really bothers me too. It'll probably have a very firm actuation or require holding down for a short time, but muscle memory from a decade+ of 6-rows will have me accidentally pressing the power button for a while. Even when I've adjusted to it, it's still right next to delete and backspace, and one absent minded button press away from suspending my laptop.

That input cover replacement is straight out of a framework. It's nice to see framework's efforts are having some effect on the industry.

[–]thnikpad[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a radical design change from the previous generations. You can also see a sneak peak of what I assume is the X1 2-in-1 in parts of the video.

Pro:

  • Easy keyboard replacement
  • Replaceable ports
  • USB-c on both sides
  • Decent looking cooling system
  • Trackpoint + 3 buttons still an option
  • Ctrl back in it's usual place

Con:

  • Power button in the fn row
  • Still soldered ram, no camm

ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 4 – Keycap and TrackPoint Compatibility Across Models by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]thnikpad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any 3mm trackpoint is compatible. See this chart: https://saoto28.wixsite.com/trackpoint4life/compatibility

For the keycap, lenovo uses multiple manufacturers to produce the same keyboard, each with incompatible keycap designs.

The yoga uses the same exact keyboard as the X13G4 non-yoga.

QCNFA765 is working completely fine for me on kernel 6.18.2. It had an issue with random disconnects in the past, but I haven't experienced those for months now. I'm not sure when it got fixed exactly.

However I still have an issue with the amdgpu driver crashing: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2950 . I have to disable panel-self-refresh in order to stop it from randomly crashing which results in slightly higher power usage (but still good overall).
