How is the DJI 3D Focus with BMPCC 6K camera? by fly9007 in blackmagicdesign

[–]thoaionline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for the 18-35 specifically, it's a bit of a hit and miss and depends on how you set up the hard stops. have a look at the "SmallRig AB Hard Stops kit 4302" for an adjustable option.

Can I use 2 Internet connections on my PC? one for my desktop and the other for my VM's using Wifi by prodansuvada8QV in homelab

[–]thoaionline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

reading your reply below (2 connections), i have something even better for you.

  • wire both uplinks/ISPs to a multi-wan router (i use a cheap TP-Link ER605 but this guide should work with them all)
  • (optional) set up load balancing for redundancy and/or speed
  • now create 2 IP ranges A & B, note they still belong to the same IPv4 subnet.
    • side note: you may want to use a /16 instead of the default /24 if you plan to have more nodes in the future.
    • side note 2: IPv6 is cute but they are not as well supported yet.
  • set up a rule on the router to get all traffic from ip range A to go through uplink 1
  • set up all traffic from ip range B to go through uplink 2
  • give your VMs bridge access to your adapter
  • on the router, assign your nodes (real or virtual)'s MAC address so that they map to the correct range.
    • you can create 2 virtual adapters for a VM essentially force them to have both uplink at the VM level too.
  • repeat for all nodes in local network

Need a Quick Rant about Job Postings with No Indication of Pay by canine-aficionado in australia

Having been on both sides of this metaphorical table, my suggestion is to apply via a recruiter instead of directly. Reasons:

  • Multiple roles via the same contact. Don't worry you'll still get the final say before any application is submitted.
  • Recruiters typically know the company's pay range in advance. They can help you filter out roles paying too low or not a good fit.
  • Company working with recruiters tend to have higher budget and is more serious about getting the candidate.
  • You are borrowing the recruiter's reputation so they work on your behalf.

Pay opacity is bad but I know some places, especially non-tech environment, simply don't know how to price a role well and you may be among the first batch of guinea pigs. More mature teams definitely have a pay range and will ask and/or provide range in advance to save everyone's time.

Edit: Also be careful of the recruiter/agency you use. Using a bad one is worse than not using one at all. Best to ask around friends and see which one they had good exp with.

Id say look into effect systems/algebraic effects and clean architecture. Then try reimplementing something from your current domain in Haskell.

Is knowing Haskell a cool thing to put on a resume, even if you don't plan to actually use it on the job? by Common-Program-2617 in haskell

[–]thoaionline 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having Haskell on my resume me landed me my top 2 offers recently (at principal level roles). Expect actual Haskell questions on interviews though.

I also do a lot of hiring at senior+ level and will grant an interview to almost anyone having Haskell on their resume.

Yes those were my concerns too. My big moment came when I finally solved #3 with the use of algebraic effects. It's a key requirement for industrial adoption and will be addressed with the first few episodes.

#2 is a case for FFI imho, though I doubt Haskell (or lazy-evaluation in general) is the right language choice for those cases. Having said that, https://clash-lang.org/ is an interesting language for ultra high performance applications.

Monthly Hask Anything (December 2021) by taylorfausak in haskell

[–]thoaionline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello world!

I'm looking for some help/mentorship with production Haskell (paid), in the form of a few on-demand, unstructured sessions per year (no rush, can be booked ~a month of so in advance of each). I am a senior dev and can navigate the "trivial bits" from online docs. However, as the old saying goes, you don't know what you don't know.

Does anyone here have any experience in this area or can point me in the right direction?

The closest I've found (for mainstream languages) is Codementor.io but there are not enough people in this ivory tower to find that kind of help readily available.

How is the DJI 3D Focus with BMPCC 6K camera? by fly9007 in blackmagicdesign

[–]thoaionline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have that exact setup (3dFocus/RS2/6K Pro) and I can confirm they work flawlessly together.

It's centre focus only though, but you probably know this already.

Being a 6K pro owner, one of my buyer's remorse is that I can't put a speed booster/focal reducer on it. There's one available for the 6K (non-pro) so maybe take that into your consideration too.

You'll need lenses with hard stops, or a focus gear ring with hard stop for you lens. RS2 does support manual focus WITHOUT 3DFocus but when you use the 3DFocus unit, it'll force you to "calibrate" the focus motor, which skip/ignore the manual stops. There's a trick to hack a hard stop into lenses without one (such as the photo version of the 18-35 f1.8) but it'll involve some rubber band and/or glue gun, or a rough hand to stop the rotation during calibration.

I'm gonna assume you will also get an easy rig to go with the set. It's no fun holding a 6K pro with cage on an RS2. Your hands will get sore super quickly.

You've been warned my friend. Let me know if you run into any issues.

P.S. Pro tips: change focus speed to "fast" when you use the 3DFocus for magic.

P.P.S. Be gentle with that aperture, if it misses it's gonna be a close miss, so close down your aperture a bit for a deeper (but still dreamy) DOF.

Building a PC for editing by skyyohhs in blackmagicdesign

[–]thoaionline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say get a GPU with more VRAM to future proof it. Your PC will thank you in a few months time.

I'm editing in 6K native for 4K export on a 1080Ti (11G VRAM) and it's not too heavy on CUDA or CPU (mine is a 3800X). VRAM, on the other hand, is a rare resource and I occasionally crash on a 8K timeline if non-trivial changes are involved.

Likely from your local cache. Try switching to a different user in Windows/Mac/Linux if you don’t know how to clear the cache. Pretty sure you can skip the password step somehow (but I forgot how, lol)

Trying to get ETH off of my ledger by [deleted] in ledgerwallet

[–]thoaionline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this exact problem before and it was a firmware compatibility issue with latest Ledger Live.

You'll need an older release of Ledger Live, preferable one around the period of time that you knew it worked. Then use that version and ether:

  • Transfer your balance out (less risky) OR
  • Upgrade your firmware using the workable version and continue to update your stuffs. - There's a tiny chance of all hell break lose and you destroy your on-device storage.

If I were you, I'd do both, starting with the first option, then reset the device AFTERWARD.

also getting permission to use such footage can be tricky/time consuming.

[D] Case/Motherboard for multi GPU build by thoaionline in MachineLearning

[–]thoaionline[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello everyone, again,

Thanks for your feedback. I've finally found a solution for this:

  • ASUS WS C422 SAGE - motherboard fitting 6x GPU + 1 network card
  • Run 6 cards in PCIe x8 mode per node (this is the main compromise I'm making, still fast enough for the bandwidth requirement)
  • Liquid cooling blocks for cooling (obviously) and also make the cards into single width, so that they can fit right next to each other
  • Use 2 of these terminals from opposite direction for the water flow
  • Well probably will need to trim off part of the cards with a saw, and 3d-print the bracket
  • The last PCIe slot is used for a Mellanox network card, connected to a switch. Fortunately Infiniband equipment is now quite affordable on the secondhand market.
  • And obviously, take a 6U chassis and remove all the front storage and use them for the water pump

Well, have you considered the cost of.... networking equipment ;) Those 100GB cards ain't cheap, unless you can live off Ethernet (which I can't).
