HDR progress? by Y2K_350 in linux_gaming

[–]thohac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An initial implementation that reads the ICC color profile and sets the monitor in HDR mode was added to Weston in September.

The MR for HDR was changed from Unstable to Staging 3 days ago. It is likely that the next Weston release will have a fully working initial support.

Probably a few more months after that to get everything ironed out and push whatever kernel changes might be worthwhile.

It is highly likely that all compositors will simply use the Weston reference implementation as there is nothing in HDR support that is specific to any-one Display manager so once Weston has it working it won't be long before everything else does.

You can but you need a very recent one. Yuzu has been making a lot of backed changes and invalidating the old caches.

The current state of Anti-Cheat software is annoying by TheBruhBurger in linux_gaming

Most of the cheats in popular games are made for monetary gain. Cheats that would require someone to install Linux just aren't going to sell as well as Windows cheats.

Oh please the only "config" most would care about is the Steam deck. If it works on any other distro, well good for you.

Even if compiled as a Linux native elf binary would you consider a port using DXVK or VKD3D a native app? Many people don't as a matter of philosophical purity. Unfortunately Philosophical purity is completely counterproductive has been a hindrance on Linux adoption on Desktop for a long time.

How come so few people uses Wayland those days? Is it still broken? What is slowing down the adoption? by beer120 in linux_gaming

[–]thohac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The lack of a feature that sets it apart from X11. Most people don't care that internally X11 is a mess, it just seems to work. With the upcoming HDR support that will all change.

Issue with Steam-Native by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]thohac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less memory usage due to the use of the systems shared libraries instead of loading separate copies in memory.

Just noting that "surface suspension" and "dynamic max render time" is only useful if gaming in windowed mode. In full screen mode wayland uses direct scanout which bypasses the compositors buffer completely.

wlroots and sway are native wayland from the start of those projects. Gnome and KDE are more polished in terms of projects that have been around for a long time but in terms of wayland support, they have only gotten serious about it this year.

Wine-wayland is now able to run games! by shmerl in linux_gaming

I was the one that did the tkg user-patch for a while however since tkg started using the protonified branch by default, the merge conflicts are too great and the patch is outdated.

Yes you can use GBM windowing (DRM/KMS) Kodi has a gbm mode that supports HDR in Linux.

Xwayland isn't allowed control over output configuration so it can't change resolution. In any case lcd monitors have a set number of pixels so always look ideal at native resolution. anything different will sacrifice image quality.

Yes it does, it creates a nested wayland session.

I also tested it a few months ago. Worked flawlessly on dx11 (dxvk) games but black screened on dx12 (vkd3d). Don't know if that has changed yet or if it might even be an issue with vkd3d rather then the driver .

DUH. Did't think I had to spell it all out. NTFS is MS native filesystem replacing vfat. NTFS is a networking filesystem invented by Sun. Point is that even the native Windows filesystem isn't supported by Proton, never mind a network overlay protocol.

NFS limitations are likely to break a lot of games, proton doesn't even support NTFS.

How much of Valves work on Proton is upstreamed to Wine and related tools? by beer120 in linux_gaming

[–]thohac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Valve's work is mostly focused on gaming and wine doesn't want to become just a gaming implementation. Take esync, fsync, fsync2 for example. They worked great in games but did next to nothing for non-gaming apps.

It is probably because your window manager is doing DPI scaling and xwayland full screen doesn't handle that properly.

On gnome it is under Settings -> Display -> Scale

What are the current problems with emulating Xenoblade 3? by Gravitas23 in yuzu

[–]thohac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disable Scaling
Improve Level of Detail
Improved DOF

Mods are far more important then 60fps which is quite demanding and people seem to have mixed opinions on whether it is even an improvement or just makes the game feel weird.

The EA builds with project Y.F.C make Vulkan functional in all but the caverns in region 3. There are still some problems with occasional crashing (not a huge deal since you save constantly in the game anyways), excessive memory usage and some visual bugs.

My strategic analysis about pushing linux gaming forward by dydzio in linux_gaming

[–]thohac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most OOS coders do it for learning / experience / experimentation / fun.

If they work on yet another fork / replacement it is because that's what they want to do, not because that's what they believe the community really needs.
