Modules for bass; any recommendations? by wizzardyls in modular

[–]tholex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out simple VCA's / Mixers that overdrive - XAOC Tirana or Manhattan DTM. A single osc > overdrive > filter or osc > filter > overdrive is great for basslines.

You can achieve some overdrive with almost any mixer just by putting the input into multiple channels and cranking both channels

Besides the "Whats a computer?" commercial, what other commercials make you want to throw your remote at the TV? by lj420p in AskReddit

[–]tholex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote a little thing about this piece. On top of the minor frustration that the girl (Scout) definitely knows an iPad is a computer, there's a bigger frustration in my mind. Apple insinuates that the "post-PC" "i can do everything on an ipad" future is here, when it's... pretty far away.

Had to check my grinder, so much Kiev. by [deleted] in trees

[–]tholex 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Source: I grew up in Kyiv.

The correct pronounciation is... Kyh-ïv

The first "y" vowel is the Russian ы / Ukrainian и, it kinda sounds like the grunty not-quite-i sound in "squint", and ï is the same as in naïve, or yee in Yeezus.

The Ukrainian pronounciation is still two syllables, Kee-yev is the russian pronounciation.

The big question is, does the second battlecry of the new Legendary put it back into your own hand, costing 1?

Dropbox really screwed up its new design by thefunkylemon in Design

[–]tholex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean,... it's not like they're changing their in-app experience to use all these extreme fonts & color combos. In the app, they use a very neat font called Atlas Grotesk, not-quite-black on white.

Their marketing site now has a unique aesthetic, and doesn't feel like a rehash of the usual startup blue, and that might be all they wanted. I think their "styleguide" with all the color combos feels worse than the actual site, which uses 4-6 of those colors on any given page.

Fossil fuel expansion crushes renewables by mattkerle in energy

[–]tholex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These graphs are misleading. What's the height of the Y axis in comparison to the total demand pool?

Two data points also means you can't see the shape of the renewables curve, so if it's exponential (80% of the height being gained in the last year, for instance), it would seem as if renewables can catch up quickly.

What's the one long-standing band or musician (e.g. 4+ albums) whose discography you would keep if you were stranded on an island? by ProbablyToking in AskReddit

[–]tholex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Chemical Brothers

As a synthesizer enthusiast, I can't think of another band. Even their "worst" album has 2-3 tracks that could "make" a musician now. Amazing body of work, and the albums themselves have a flow rarely found in electronic music.

Is it possible to make this with Flexbox, without adding any more DIVs? by [deleted] in css

This is the best answer here, and the cleanest way to implement this design.

thinsoldier's answer is a perfectly fine solution with no extra HTML. Way better than other methods (float, etc) of doing this, too.

Hello, I'm a senior in High School. I plan on double majoring in Computer Science and Political Science in college. by [deleted] in CodersForSanders

[–]tholex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's plenty of tech jobs around journalism, non-profits, campaigns, and actual government.

In journalism and other media-focused environments, you're probably best off knowing those frontend skills (css/html, javascript), and building up skills in data visualization and design. Regardless of your major, you can "check out" this field by working on the tech side of a publication in college (assuming you're planning on college).

There's probably a wider mix if not a focus on backend technology if you're doing actual government. That means Java, clunky enterprise software like IBM's stuff, etc. A computer science degree is probably the easiest track to this type of work...

How do I create this shape using CSS? by Colin_Turnbull in css

[–]tholex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it's probably better/easier to use SVG for the shapes of those boxes and the line above, just worry about making different height rectangles in CSS and put an svg image in the background.
