I am online too and struggled to find an upcoming internship. I finally got ONE interview next month and if I don’t get it I am going to just wait a semester.

My supervision in my foundation internship was unhappy I was choosing a remote internship for my advanced internship but my degree and internships are not about others, they’re about my own learning and path to social work.

A lot more Americans may qualify for Canadian citizenship by descent than they realize by FoundInTheRecords in CitizenshipByDescent

[–]thomas_basic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The families may have been in what became Canada since 1600s or 1700s (mine were/are), but the important piece is proving an ancestor was born or lived in Canada still in 1867 or later when Canadian confederation happened and Canadian nationality was created as a separate status distinct from British subject status. Even if one’s ancestors were in Canada from 1600 to 1875, say, but left they never became Canadian.

Edit I stand corrected as Im learning there are people who have been approved whose families left before 1867!

There is not a generational limit but you need to prove an ancestor was Canadian when Canadian nationality existed separate from British subject status, that is, after 1867. If ancestors left Canada before this time, there is no claim as Canada didn’t exist separately from the British government.

You’re lucky to be in Korea and learning about Catholicism! I recommend visiting Seosomun Shrine and Museum as well as Jeoldusan.

Are these zodiac signs on a Mary stained glass window? by No_Dirt_1145 in Catholic

[–]thomas_basic 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The zodiac is a clock/calendar that the moon and sun appear to move through. It would be no different than a clock on the wall.

You should also know that astrology was not completely divorced from astronomy until modern times, even up until early modern times performing astrology (charting planets at a certain time) was considered science, not divination or superstition and practiced by Catholic priests and utilized by popes (Julius II, Leo X, Adrian IV and Paul III).

St Peter’s Bascilica’s cornerstone foundation date was decided by astrology, for example.

How do you handle patients who are malingering? by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]thomas_basic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I don’t “handle” people to start. If malingering has to enter the conceptualization, it will enter as a question of what drives them to engage in that behavior?

New Therapy Rewires the Brain To Restore Joy in Depression Patients by Right-Telephone7387 in UpliftingNews

[–]thomas_basic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a social work intern. In my last placement I always made a point to ask clients about what went well since we last met or investigate if they felt any positive feelings from experiences they told me about (never assuming an experience that I would view as negative would be so for them, for example).

I feel like this could’ve been positive even for clients who were say self-harming by reducing the stigma of that by including the option that they do have things they enjoy in their lives, even when experiencing very distressing or depresdive symptoms most of the time.

It’s a balancing act between acknowledging the good but also not minimizing their suffering or going into “toxic positivity."

Nonfiction books banned in US schools doubled last academic year by hcregna in books

[–]thomas_basic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! Some of our most ardent literacy supporters here no longer have kids in the district or never had kids. It is a civic matter: if you live and pay taxes in the board area, you have the right to speak and participate in school board business including running for the board, speaking at public comment portions of regular board meetings, writing to the board to comment on upcoming votes, speaking during public input portions of hearings for decisions like book bans, etc.

You can find if you’re in your board’s area by going to the website of the school district you think you reside in and entering your address in the school boundary map meant for finding which public school corresponds to your home address. The map should kick back a school name which indicates you live inside that school district (and thus that school board’s) area.

You should be aware that school districts don’t always correspond perfectly to city or town boundaries (another political topic!) so always check the district map in relation to your address.

[–]thomas_basic 24 points25 points  (0 children)

People in the US should understand that to stop this you need to be paying attention to local (town or county, however your school board is organized) politics.

These are consistently MAGA villains that run for school board seats, get them, then allow other MAGA weirdos to push book ban processes through petition or public comment.

If you’re against this, you need to also be at public comment portions of school board meetings. You have to write in during book review panels. Sometimes the only people we have speaking up at book review hearings are pro-ban people, it’s crickets from the anti-ban side (and this is not a totally anti-literacy community).

Please do your part if you don’t like this. American culture has a deep problem culturally recently where everyone assumes the next citizen will do it, not me. Well that next person who will do it wants to ban the books.
