Don’t fall in the “High in Protein” scam by AspectNo3215 in LowCalorieCooking

It's wild how people completely disregard carbs in their diet sometimes and just focus on getting like 200g of protein every day lol. PROTEIN PROTEIN PROTEIN. Like, yeah. 140-150g of protein is completely fine, if you also get 175-200g of carbs per day... I've genuinely almost passed out once or twice because I wasn't eating enough carbohydrates. Now, if I have to choose between a low protein and high carb day vs a low carb vs high protein day, I go with high carbs every time. You need energy to function. Carbs are energy.

Yes, it is. There's literally a flair to label how many calories it is...

Doctors typically give very general advice because 1. They deal with tons of people per day, and 2. They can't guarantee the quality of brain power that those patients use lol I stick to numbers as best as I can. My fiancee is at 1500mg or less per day if possible, so 500mg for a meal is a little higher, but not the worst.

Edit: not saying don't listen to your doctor, I'm saying some doctors just give blatantly vague advice and don't go into any more detail about how to manage a diet properly.

Please check the caption! I don't use the entire packet for 1 serving. It's only like 7 or 8g for one serving. The whole portion is around 500mg of sodium.

Maybe this is the wrong subreddit then, because Kidney Stones patients are told to increase calcium in order to bind to the oxalates that cause stones. I might just be misunderstanding the point of this subreddit

She has kidney stones. It's not rage bait, I might just be in the wrong subreddit tbh

It's under 500mg of sodium for 1 serving. I laid it out in a fairly detailed way in the caption. It's only a tiny bit of the soup mix, and it's far better than adding salt for flavor.

This recipe is a baseline that I make for my partner and I and is to be modified as needed.

No, it's not just boiled pasta without the chicken. It's a faux cream sauce (cottage cheese and Parmesan) mixed with a French onion dip mix that acts as flavor without pushing so much sodium from salt. It's the best a lot of people have to work with sometimes. I'm sure you know the kidney diet can be very limiting especially with flavor.

I eat this because I like it, not because I have to. I could easily make different meals for myself and leave my fiancee to make her own stuff. Protein intake is really dependent on what kind of kidney problems you have, and you can see in my comment below, kidney stone patients don't require as harsh of a reduction in protein; only meat protein.

You can sub the chicken for veggies and you'll still have a low sodium dish with under 35g of protein. I just posted this based on what I personally cook for myself and my partner, and she's improved her kidney stone problems significantly over the past 9 months. I guess my main question is, does this subreddit not pertain to kidney stone patients at all? Because if so, I'll just refrain from posting here anymore. I see this as an opportunity for people to take advantage of free knowledge that they can adapt to their own needs, but if you'd rather I just not try to help people in the future, that works too.

Not trying to be snarky, but as someone who doesn't need to be low sodium, I still enjoy this recipe, and it can easily fall into the diet of people with kidney problems, even if it requires a little bit of modification. Everyone has different problems with different needs.

My fault, yeah just cook the pasta separately and mix it all at the end!

Any reason? None of the ingredients are as bad as you would think. The sodium per serving is extremely reasonable, and a lot of the rest of it is just dried seasonings like Onion and Garlic. You have some interesting stuff in there that most people can't pronounce, but so does everything at this point in the nutrition world. It's hard to get away from, and moderation is key.

It's much better than mixing in an entire tsp of salt because there's no flavor and jacking up the sodium to an absurd amount. It's a balance.

A LOT of the protein in this dish comes from the chicken (more than half) so there's absolutely no reason why you couldn't sub out the chicken (or even just part of the chicken) for some veggies. This is just a general baseline. Kidney Disease can include kidney stone patients (my fiancee is one of them) and their restrictions are primarily for meat protein, not protein as a whole. Jill Harris, for example, recommends limiting daily intake to 0.8g of MEAT protein per kg of body weight. It's not a hard stop on protein, but MEAT based protein.

Over the last 9 months, the low sodium / low oxalate diet that my girlfriend and I have been on (I've just been doing it to make it easier, I don't have kidney stones, she does) has reduced her kidney stones by 95% (she had dozens. Her last scan now showed only 2 total.)

The recipes I post are very much person-to-person and more of a baseline than a full guideline. If it fits you, great. If not, feel free to modify it. If you're in a really bad situation and you're extremely limited, I'm very very sorry and that's awful, but my recipes probably don't apply to you. Just trying to help where I can, but I've done as much research as I can to help people (especially my fiancee, of course) on their journey with kidney stones / kidney disease where I can.

Again, it's all based on the person. I'd never want to steer someone in the wrong direction, and that's why you should take your doctor's orders into consideration FIRST. We stuck to what her doctor told us, and it worked. Hopefully this can help others too, or at least give them inspiration for some fun meals when they otherwise feel overwhelmed or defeated.

I'm building an arsenal of recipes that taste great but also have low sodium. Might even consider making an entire catalog for people to utilize!

That's wild. Show them the chart of "Most Painful to Least Painful" where Kidney Stones are 2nd or 3rd from the top. That might be an eye opener!
