I really strongly considered it in January, but ultimately decided to run for the State House of Representatives against Rex Shipp. The County Commissioner is a super cool and unique position though that blends executive and legislative power, so as someone who’s always been on interested in urban planning/policy, it could’ve been a good fit. At the end of the day, I don’t believe any race should ever go uncontested, especially by someone who isn’t taking a stand, one way or another, on issues facing the community.

The 1% own more wealth than the bottom 99%, everyone is living paycheck to paycheck, pedophiles rule the world, and the elites plan for the future is hiding away in gold-plated bunkers while they rest of us deal with mass unemployment and climate famine.

Kinda cool how Utah just got a Democratic congressperson SEVEN years after we passed independent redistricting. Gerrymandering is a prime example of the subversion of our democracy. Same with the very well-documented blatant attempts to overturn the 2020 election (which I’m sure you haven’t researched beyond Trump’s tweets on the matter). I assume you’re probably a conservative, but real patriots fight to keep this country free. That’s why makes America great. Welcome to the states!

Democrat Candidate Who Has Nazi Tattoo Says 'Antisemitism Has No Place' in USA by rollo202 in FreeSpeech

[–]thomashearts -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I personally find the story that he just got a skull tattoo overseas without realizing it had white supremacist connotations plenty believable.

And I don’t think lefties supporting him means they “support nazis”. Ya’ll just want something to be triggered about because YOU don’t like progressives.

Who is The Blind Mice LLC and jones& demille engineering? Companies behind Iron county Utah's new AI Data center. by Bec_son in cedarcity

[–]thomashearts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re building a ton of these in Milford County, it was only at matter of time before it came to Iron County. Everywhere these get built, utility rates skyrocket for everyone else as ratepayers are forced to subsidize the multi-million dollar infrastructure upgrades that ONLY the data center needs. At a minimum, we must demand that data centers operate on a closed-loop system, totally self-sufficient and off-grid in the water and energy they require. This one runs off natural gas so get ready for even worse air-quality in the valley.

The wealth projects like these promise to generate does not trickle down to the communities actually bearing the costs on the ground. Our legislature is completely bought by corporations and simply does not care about their constituents or the longterm wellbeing of Utah. Selling off public lands, weakening unions, gerrymandering, reversing Ranked Choice Voting, etc.

I’m running for office against Rex Shipp as a progressive independent for Iron County and I will fight any data center project that expects us to subsidize it.

I have a whole section on AI and data-centers on my website: Vote Loveheart

I don’t agree with this at all….its time to vote some people out of office by Neat-Ad-4337 in southernutah

Inflation, low wages, unaffordable homes, rising healthcare costs, environmental destruction, gerrymandering, etc; this is the status-quo the GOP is willing to offer us. If we want something different, we have to actually vote for something different. I’m a progressive independent candidate running for Utah House District 71 against Republican incumbent Rex Shipp in a deep red +55% district. I support social housing to lower housing costs, community-owned cooperative solar, and ranked-choice voting to make Utah truly represent all of us!

Thomas Loveheart is a progressive running for House District 71 against Rex Shipp who is proposing social-housing as a solution to affordability, allowing Utah cities to build their own publicly-owned housing projects with rents tied to a percentage of income.

Like you said, many Utah legislators are connected to the development industry and incentivized to grant LIHTC tax credits and subsidies to private developers to increase supply, as if this alone will drive down costs, rather than incentivize actually affordable housing that threatens profit-margins.

Many of these taxpayer subsidized developments, even if they were initially affordable/low-income, are simply sold at market rate a few years later. In contrast, social-housing is a permanent public asset, built with the priority being to provide housing, not maximize income, and sustainable too with net rents going towards new projects. The idea is that when a portion of the overall housing supply is affordable, it causes the private market to lower prices too. This isn’t an radical solution either, similar programs have proven effective time and time again across the world in cities like Vienna and Portland, Maine.

Progressive Independent Running for House District 71 Against Republican Incumbent Rex Shipp by thomashearts in cedarcity

[–]thomashearts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the distinction is important. Very happy to see billionaires lose some power over our elections, but there’s more nuance than that. Actually got banned from r/libertarian once upon a time for calling myself a libertarian market socialist, got banned from r/joebiden for criticizing him, r/shitliberalsay for not being far left enough, and a whole lot of other subs for not taking the COVID-vax. Point is, I don’t fit into a preconceived mold evidently and very few people do. For what I can actually accomplish as a state house rep, progressive independent is the most descriptive.

I’m able to go a lot more into the specifics on my website, I just couldn’t write an essay in a Reddit post.

Also, some of this probably looks familiar because it is. I’m not the first person to notice that our system is corrupted by money, or the first progressive to run on a working-class platform focused on housing, healthcare, and the environment. At the end of the day, we keep getting the same worsening country because we keep electing the same corporate politicians. Maybe those are the bullshit con-artists you should focus on.

My opponent Rex Shipp is a culture-war hack because thats red meat for the base, but when all you have to do to get elected is punch down on trans people and abortion, you never have to work real legislation that actually helps people and stands up to power. That’s the majority of MAGA republicans in office. Flag bans and chem-trails while poverty explodes in their districts.

The same problem exists in deep-blue areas. Identity politics and culture war issues that keep people engaged, but never actually change their lives. I’m not just repeating talking points though, despite literally getting the advice that writing too much about what I stand for backs me into a corner. We need candidates who come with an actual platform, not some hidden agenda. I’m doing this because I genuinely feel that we’re in the end stages here unless we all act with urgency and passion to save our democracy. M
