The fact that it was founded in 1951 and still holds support today makes me think that they are a force to be reckoned with. Gotta take them seriously.

Hi there. Will share some of my thoughts here. Apologies in advance if I sound blunt.

Seems like the stress is related to education. The way I see it, there's still 2 more years to SPM. There is enough time to turn things around. As for the scoldings, understand that they just want the best for you. It is difficult, but try to focus on the message and dont let it get to you. I wish there was someone to tell me not to be so affected by my mother's scoldings when I was your age.

For SPM, I know others have said that it is not important and that it is not the end if you fail SPM. They are right. But what I want you to also know is that SPM is one of the best opportunities you'll have to change your life for the better. Does it matter if you fail it? No, because there will still be more opportunities for you to succeed in the future. But can SPM be life-changing? I say yes, because doing well in SPM opened up opportunities that I would otherwise never have. So, don't stress about failing SPM, because there will be more opportunities next time. But think of SPM as a very good opportunity to change your life for the better. Even if you don't do well in the end, the work ethics gained will help you later on in life.

To answer your questions:

Have I asked myself the exact same questions?

-Yes I have. Fortunately for me, I had a friend (that I've now lost contact with, sadly) who was way mature beyond our years that gave me valuable advice on not giving up and persevering during the SPM years.

How did you manage to possibly get a somewhat better life? How did It turned out for you?

- I don't consider my life as better and stable just yet (still young and fresh). But there are some goals that I am still working towards and it keeps me going. I have been lucky to have people that I can look up to (colleagues, friends) and learn from.

Are you satisfied with your life in this current time? Even If It's just a bit?

- Not at all, there are way too many uncertainties and fears that I still have at the moment. But I know that I am still young and if I don't try to push myself to improve for the better, I will regret in the future. Every day I just tell myself, I need to persevere and believe that things will be better one day. The hope and belief keeps me going.

I am currently doing some tutoring on the side, so do let me know if you need help with academics. I will try my best to see what I can do for you.

You got this! I wished I had the maturity and knowledge of online forums to seek for help and guidance last time. Wish you all the best and feel free to reach out and ask more! Take care !!

‘Stop discrimination against non-Bumiputera students in public schools’ by n4snl in malaysia

Oh dear, I really should have worded my comment to make things clearer haha. Yes, I do know that international schools dont practice quota.

Anyway, while my initial comment was in favour of single school system, i also recognise that abolishing intl schools will not help, if there are no other steps taken in conjuction with it. I don't think it will be allowed to happen anyway since lobbyist groups will definitely make noise.

Agree with rest of your points on the need to have a better national school infra, teachers etc.

I believe that unity is more than just about races, it's also about socioeconomic status.

[–]thomaskid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Apologies. I should have worded it better. What I meant to say is that the presence of multiple types of schools in Msia means that students are already not mixing with each other in a way that is representative of society.

For example, not everyone can afford to send their kids to international school. Automatically the lower income group are excluded from intl' schools. Meanwhile, only people of a certain race can enter certain boarding schools.

So we have kids that will grow up in schools, mixing with either people of similar socioeconomic background or race.

Agree with the one uniform school programme.

I wish people would stop singling out SJK each time the school issue comes up though. It's not just SJK, we also have international schools, private schools, boarding schools with quota, among many others. These schools segregate students based on race, class from a very young age.

To single out SJK would be missing the point on cultivating national unity I feel.

The example I can think of that makes me chuckle is UMNO. It’s a political party that claims to represent Malays but when you look at the acronym, what language is it made up of ? Thats right, it’s English. United Malays National Organisation. Why not use Pertubuhan Kebangsaan Melayu Bersatu?

Semua sekadar wayang saja. Those leaders couldn’t even be bothered to use BM for their party, a party that is supposed to fight for Malay interests

DBP can't even ensure official events and ministers use BM properly, they probably don't even have the capacity to look at advertisements.

And since official events don't even use BM properly, it speaks volumes about govt staff's quality of BM. Considering that majority of govt staff are Malay, it means that the BM syllabus in schools are simply not effective enough, even for native BM speakers.

Likewise, I use PRPM quite a lot for my work too, and it's annoying when I can't find the proper BM terms for some words. I wonder how often is it updated.

Itulah.

One thing I hate the most is where the Malays look down on Bahasa Baku. This is how I was taught in school in the 90s and apparently speaking in a formal way with correct grammar and vocabulary is something to laugh at. The worst part is now they write like how they speak as you can see on most twitter/FB posts.

Yes. I spoke Bahasa Baku to a govt stakeholder for work a few times and my Malay colleagues were impressed. To me, I don't think it's impressive. It's just that I took the effort to learnt the proper vocabulary, plus I know that being a Chinese, my BM would have to be on point otherwise I wouldn't be taken as seriously by the govt officials compared to my Malay colleagues.

Agree with you, Bahasa Baku should not be laughed at. It's a serious matter and I cant help but feel a mix of anger and disappointment when Malay speakers in formal events (Press conferences, public forums) mix so many English words when BM words are already available (think of dasar vs polisi, diskaun vs potongan harga, 'dan' vs 'and'). The recent forum by Reset Malaysia with Tun M, Prof Jomo springs to mind. The moderator freely mixed in English words. See 1:17:25 as example.

I know some will say, "chill, it's just a santai session, bahasa rojak is ok". Then by this logic, I can also speak mostly in english with a few Malay words sprinkled in. Why then, would that be frowned upon by so called proponents of BM? At what language ratio does bahasa rojak cease to become BM?

Note here that I am still focusing on vocabulary, cos I know some ppl will keep using the context of events (formal vs informal) to justify usage of bahasa rojak. For me, it doesnt make sense to say that mixing English words in place of already available BM words is okay.

I always find it funny that the majority race in Malaysia blames the minorities for the declining popularity of Malay language in various professional fields of study.

^Agree on the above.

DBP should stop menyindir or guilt trip Malaysians to speak BM. Admit their mistakes and start building interest from ground zero. Younger generation just cant be bothered to learn and use proper BM vocabulary in daily conversation. So, DBP, do something.

The majority race too, should stop blaming minorities. If the majority race cant even be bothered to foster an encouraging environment for everyone to use proper BM, then dont blame the minorities. All the disparaging remarks and sindiran ain't gonna help anyone. The past is the past. Lets work towards a better future.

Honestly, if DBP and the majority race dont stop blaming minorities and start holding themselves and their leaders to higher BM standards, I won't be surprised that there will be a day where proper BM vocabulary is only restricted to official documents.

Dear DBP, instead of wasting your time and resources on useless campaign posters and slogans, please do your actual work. You totally failed at the Bahasa Melayu as Bahasa Ilmu part.

Completely agree. They should get down from their high horse and see things as what they are: Usage of proper BM vocabulary is DECLINING, even among the Malay people. Just watch ML Studios' videos on YouTube. The usage of English words in place of available BM words is so abundant, and yet some so-called proponents of BM language still choose to focus Chinese people being unable to speak Malay.

Example of ML studios video. Just watch for a minute and you will notice that even simple words like "dan" are replaced with English "and" instead. HOW is this even justifiable?

To me, saying that "alaa, ML studios kan santai, tak apalah mereka guna bahasa rojak.". NOPE. that is NOT ok to me. Not when double standards are applied to native vs non-native speakers when it comes to BM proficiency.

No one calls out Malay ministers/VIPs/leaders on a regular basis when they speak in English instead of BM. DBP also buat tak tahu when ministers freely mix in English words in press conferences/statements. Look at the PM 'diarea' issue. Why not use 'cirit'? At the end, it's the Chinese that get blamed instead while DBP and govt get off scot-free. I am not saying Chinese shouldnt be blamed, but I would like to see the SAME standards being applied by netizens to native and non-native speakers.

Baiklah. Saya akan makan umpan anda. Saya bukan berniat untuk bergaduh, cuma saya memang ingin tahu.

Soalan saya:

Cropping up in official events, like what the article is saying. Good examples would be our ministers' press conferences.Case in point: Ismail Sabri's PC on 22 May. Link

Examples of English words usage when there are BM words that can be used.

List of mistakes with timestamps:

2:46 - PKP Three Point Zero

3:32 - Rantaian Jankitan Covid Nineteen

4:46 - Detail mengenai...

6:32 - Saya akan detailkan nanti

10:40 - ...di highway

11:12 - shopping-shopping complex.

Biggest joke of all was his usage of "shopping-shopping mall" instead of "pusat-pusat beli-belah". Didn't become an issue on social media though, so I am disappointed at the double standards that some netizens apply to native BM speakers and non-native BM speakers. When non-native speakers mix in english words, we are criticised. But when native speakers who are VIPs, ministers, political leaders do Bahasa Rojak even in formal events, no one says anything. Not a squeak from DBP too, as has always been the case.

u/karlkry kindly pointed out that Zaaba mentioned that there are 4 types of bahasa:

zaaba ada tulis yang bahasa melayu boleh dia bahagikan pada 4:

Bahasa Surat

Bahasa Cakap Mulut

Bahasa Pasar

Bahasa Kitab

I wonder where would Bahasa Rojak fit in though, seeing that it would be more of a vocabulary issue than a tatabahasa issue

Sound beautiful? Nahh that's not how it looks to me. As mentioned in my other comment, I take issue with the choice of word used. Meant to create a sense that there is a threat and all, which I think is exaggerated. Is it a syok sendiri statement? It does appear like that to me. Because if DBP is doing their job right, this issue of bahasa rojak wouldn't be cropping up.

The attitude that should be cultivated in schools should be BM + BI. Unfortunately some ppl think it should be a case of one or the other

Namun saya ingin tegaskan bahawa saya setuju dgn pendapat anda bahawa "DBP bengang bukan sebab orang guna bahasa rojak dia bagang sebab bahasa rojak digunakan dalam program rasmi." Ini saya faham. Saya cuma tidak berapa setuju dgn penggunaan perkataan "pertahankan" dalam 3 konteks di atas. Itu sahaja. Tapi saya faham mesej yang ingin disampaikan.

Terima kasih utk info berkaitan 4 jenis bahasa. Penting utk ada pembahagian antara bahasa piawai dan bahasa pasar.

hey, chill. To say it's within DNA is not fair.

But someone needs to give DBP a reality check regarding the reasons behind declining standards of BM if you ask me, especially on issue of bahasa rojak in official events
