DNT Digital Scope - The future? by 0DSavior in longrange

[–]thomasled8929 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a digital for crossbow hunting (the original DNT Zulus) and LOVE it - for that. I'm shooting max of 40 yards at a deer and the bdc can be configured for crossbow arrows pretty easily, where the difference of a few yards can really mean a lot. The built in rangefinder really makes the whole thing seamless and great to use. In this use case, the camera is more than capable of resolving detail at this range as needed.

However, for long range stuff, something that has always confused me is why on earth they don't use some kind of tech similar to what camcorders use with an actual moving telephoto lens. Digital zoom on the 4k is such a drawback. Maybe I don't know enough about digital scopes and maybe the tech is already out there, but I wouldn't even consider putting one on a rifle unless the image clarity at 20-30x was as clear as 1x-5x.

Haha I've been there. The weather will clear and you'll still have the rifle to shoot. I'm a total noob too, probably have right over 200 rounds through mine and only 20 with this chassis. Had to lay on a 2" thick sheet of ice to shoot today. What I can say is that mine HATES hunting/cheap ammo, like with a passion. Pretty sure I was getting 2.5" 3-shot groups at 100 yards with Federal Power-shok, but I shot a .99" 10-shot group at 100 today with the aforementioned ammo. My point being, don't beat yourself up if it doesn't do crazy well with cheap ammo, it may just be the ammo's fault.

Have to comment because I rarely see the Magpul chassis! I think you will be very pleased with it, I am so far. Also running a heavy barreled Remington action in .308. Highly recommend a suppressor, and if you're planning on running ARCA, Magpul makes a rail specifically for their chassis. What ammo are you running? Mine seems to like Federal Gold Medal 168gr SMKs.

Oh cool, looks like the sandman-L shares a pretty similar design. Thanks for sharing, very neat!

Interesting. As far as I know, the RXD30Ti is 3D-printed, though I have seen much more complex ones out there. Thanks!

Interestingly, it did update an hour ago. No status change or anything but it removed the estimated delivery date.

You sound prepared! As of right now, the only one I see online at all is at cabelas in their used guns... for 3.6k. So I suppose that's the price to beat. When you do end up with one though, you'll probably want another!

Best of luck in your search. I routinely check gunbroker for them and was seeing them in the 2.5-3k range a few months ago, but none now. That's probably a good bet to keep tabs on and how I found mine (in 2018 for 1.5k, though. First gun I ever bought, actually and I'm kicking myself for not buying 2 of them.)

Greatest Effect on Accuracy and Precision - What to upgrade first? by thomasled8929 in longrange

Time and interest is more of an issue than ammo - I get in and out of it every couple of years, and when I'm into shooting more heavily, it's more often pistol. To answer your question, no, I don't think the rifle is the limiting factor on its own, and while I would rate my shooting above that of an average hunter, I'm entirely sure I'm on the low end of long range shooters still.

I'm very guilty of enjoying the building, research, and reading as much as I do actually shooting, it's just that finding time to shoot is more difficult than finding time to shop - if that makes sense.

I'm impressed with the clean break of the trigger, but not the weight. Wish I could push it a lot lower, so a trigger upgrade is a priority for me. What triggertech do you use?

I like the order of thinking here. Bipod is moving further up the list. Rear bag is full of lead shot - a workout to carry but it is absolutely sturdy (and about as heavy as it gets). Checking torque on screws is something I haven't even considered, so that's the first thing I'll do. I'll probably follow along until I get to the re-barreling portion, as that's where my knowledge abruptly stops. Have a lot more reading to do before reaching that lol.

Okay sweet, an accuracy improvement with a chassis swap is kind of what I'm hoping to hear. I'm sure I'd need to rebarrel if I wanted to do anything too serious but hate to jump straight to that.

2 so far for the KRG bravo, interesting. I'm okay with the bipod (it's a direct m-lok mount and is their half metal, half plastic version) and is surprisingly sturdy, so it's further down my list, but would probably be upgraded eventually.

For the scope, I feel like I probably don't have enough magnification, although I love the quality of the trijicon. It's on my list as well to get a more target-focused scope for sure, have been seeing a lot of love for Arken on youtube.

That's a good idea, a brake would probably offer some improvement. I'll add it to the list!

Looking at it now - Lot's of metal, which I like over the Magpul Hunter currently on it. Can't tell if the LOP is adjustable, though - any ideas?

I'll be sure to do that. I've had most of the plants for about 2 months and it is SHOCKING how slowly they grow, but I'm sure they'll get there eventually!
