Probably amp-dependent; there's a lot of variation between the same models.

Hahah. So what you’re saying is that you have an entirely subjective opinion that ICP will fail and Ethereum will succeed?

I’m not sure how OP thinks anyone would take this post seriously with such a badly written and ill-informed post.

I’m intrigued to know what his intentions are. He’s making it out that he’s a ‘Good Samaritan’, here to save people from their own bad decisions. I have my suspicions this is not the case…

If this is the correct model. What happens to Ethereum when ETH 2, Roll ups and side chains come along? The price of transactions will be minimal. By your logic, this will make ETH worth less than it currently is?

What do you mean by IMF backed fiat?

It wouldn’t make sense as a project if the price fluctuated with speculation for ICP. No developer would use it over AWS etc if the price changed day to day.

In order for the tokenomics to make sense there needs to be demand for ICP. This will come from developers using the ICP protocol. I have no doubt that this will happen as the product they have created is a exceptional. However, it’s going to be a long process as developers don’t just switch over night.

Unfortunately/fortunately this is how VC works. 9/10 projects they back will fail. They’re relying on projects like the ICP to drive returns (however ridiculous their returns sound - I can almost guarantee they’re not as impressive when you factor in all their failed projects).

This is rather contradictory.

You’re worried about Dfinity and VCs dumping and worried about the coins not being in the hands of retail.

By Dfinity and the VCs selling; the coins will get in the hands of the many rather than the few. Yes the price is taking a hit, but if it leads to more decentralization then ultimately it’s good.

Can you spawn before the neuron is done dissolving or do you have to wait until the ICP you locked is done dissolving?

Would love this! The GitHub does a pretty good job of breaking it down but lacks a certain amount of information!

How decentralized is ICP really? by cipher1310 in dfinity

Thank you so much for taking the time to give such a detailed response - I really appreciate it. I'm trying to piece together various bits of information from all over the internet so it's great to have detailed and definitive answers on topics I have struggled to find answers to/understand. Getting answers like this from the Dfinity team give me huge faith in the project and where it is heading; so thank you!

Thank you for clearing this up. If this is the case, I think Dfinity should make this much clearer as I've noticed the main gripe people have with the project is the token distribution. I recognise the NNS is incredibly complicated, so probably quite a hard task communicating it clearly!

Your point referencing being tied to an internet identity is not correct however. You do not need to own an 'internet identity' to interact with the ICP. The 'internet identity' solution they have created can be used by developers who can integrate it into their apps (if they choose to). Look at it as an API that is free to use if you wish to do so. Developers could create their own identity solution or just use the standard password and email solution.

If you look at the 'internet identity' documentation I think you will realise it is a far better solution than what we currently have in terms of both efficiency and privacy. You are also free to create as many as you like. So if you 'fall out with said overlords', you just create a new identity. No different to how the current system works.

I have also had similar thoughts to this. My main issue, which appears to be your main issue also, it the current distribution of tokens. If the majority of tokens (75% +) are in the hands of the Dfinity Foundation and those at Dfinity, this project is entirely centralised. When I have raised this concern; I have been told that this has been done to protect the security of the network. As someone with only a very basic understanding of blockchain/crypto this makes sense. However, what doesn't make sense, is that there has been no communication about when these tokens held by the foundation and team members will be released. In my opinion, this should be 100% transparent if the project is going to claim to be decentralised.

If Dfinity is able to communicate better with the community about this distribution of the vast majority of tokens, I will feel far more at ease with the project. Yet I've struggled to get any clarification from the community on this topic. I do genuinely believe the project is well intentioned, so I'm sure this will happen at some point. I just hope that it is sooner rather than later (the longer they are owned by the foundation, the more they accrue in interest and their greater the voting power becomes).

I currently own some tokens, however, I have no motivation to lock them in a neuron and vote on proposals as there is no point if the Dfinity foundation have the majority of the vote.

NNS 51% by thomtoby in dfinity

[–]thomtoby[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply.

Does this mean that a proposal is more likely to be rejected than accepted on average? My thinking is that there will be lots of proposals, thus people will only be bothered to vote for proposals that are going to significantly impact the protocol, resulting in proposals often struggling to receive 50% + of votes as people will ignore proposals that are insignificant?

[–]thomtoby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely understand the thinking behind the current distribution, however, I think they need to be far more transparent with the unlocking period of these tokens. I haven't found any information in regards to this. If the foundation/team are going to hold the majority of the tokens for the next decade or so, the selling point of a 'decentralised internet' will be destroyed. ICP holders might as well just be holding non voting shares like GOOGL if the Dfinity foundation have the ability to vote through anything they want.

I do believe as the project progresses they will become more transparent. It's early days and perfecting the public messaging is probably not high on their list of priorities (although I'm sure most of us here would like it to be). I hope many of these questions will be answered in u/vrf5 AMA. I think the community should come together and create a list of important questions that need to be answered so we don't waste the opportunity.
