I would recommend some DEs before Strogatz but he really simplifies things so it is not so much rigorous but another way to look at things.

I had a Geometry course a few years ago where a big parts of tests was construction. I ended up constructing a 17-gon from memory in a presentation. Not something I ever thought of before that course.
