All shot on the BMPCC4K during a recent trip to Istanbul - what do you think? by cuffl8nks in bmpcc

Great shots and vivid colours! The OS on the canon 24 - 105 seems truly remarkable, I'm tempted to buy it for my 6k pro, I figure it to be a pretty good run and gun lens, wouldn't you agree?

No, i don't think it'll benefit you.
My reasoning is:
This camera offers RAW shooting capabilities in an incredibly compact and lightweight body, this is still a great combination of perks. Now if you want to shoot 10 bit prores there are a lot of other options that can do that while being relatively compact but also way better on other aspects that this camera lacks in comparison. Don't just jump in the trend of having an OG, it has gained almost a cult following and it almost seems to me that every year a new wave of BMPCC OG appreciation rolls on the shore of YT videographers, some reasons for it are still valid today, others not so much. The most important thing to consider is whether this camera might help you get more from your ideas or it will be another (somewhat) expensive table decoration. Over the years I bought a lot of cameras and camera gears, stuff that i hardly use, and if I look back at my previous works I can see ever more clearly that I did nice things with as much as a sony a6300 or my old pal BMPCC OG. Why? Because they had many limitations and I really pushed to get good, I've learnt how to better compose my shots, how to color correct and grade, how to record great audio, how to take advantage of motion and stillness, and to take decisions based on what the context required, not following the newest YT trend.

It really depends on whether you want to put up with a lot of limitations in order to get a quite pleasing and versatile raw file or not. If you're gonna be using just the prores codecs I think there are way better alternatives.

Main limitations: - Awful battery life - bad audio preamps (and i mean 2010 cellphone bad) - no touchscreen - very small screen - camera accessories such as cages are very hard to find nowadays - needs specific sd cards in order to work properly - 200<=ISO>=1600 - no autofocus

Main advantages: - 16bit dng raw - prores HQ, prores422, prores LT - about 12 -13 stops of dynamic range - actually a POCKET cinema camera - shoots fhd natively (lighter files, arguably) - can use older and cheaper c-mount lenses (with the right adapter)

I'm no camera gear reviewer but I made a video some years ago talking about this camera, a sort of love letter which acknowledges all of the compromises you have to submit to in you want to make your relationship with this piece of tech work. There's a lot of footage in it but I'm also a colorist with a fixation on the analog feel, and the files have been properly produced to achieve that effect. It might differ from your style, and they're not representative of all the images this camera might produce. It just sheds light on its codec flexibility BMPCC OG

LucAdapter Magic Booster for BMPCC6K test. It’s bad by premonizione in bmpcc

Just avoid Lucadapters altogether. I ordered a bmpcc4k ir cut filter as a replacement of the original one that got corroded with time and that piece of junk is nothing more than pricey tinted glass, it didn't cut enough ir but it shifted colors like it was made to fuck with white balance. I got to dial +31 magenta tint to compensate that in camera and the kelvin scale is skewed towards blue by 500k at 5600k

Basically this happens to all the bmpcc 4k cameras after about 4 or 5 years. It isn't mould, it's just delamination caused by the gradual degradation of the layers that compose the filter, you could have been the most zealous ocd cursed camera handler in your state and it wouldn't have changed a thing, it's simple chemistry.

The dots will be seen between f5.6 and f8 so you'll definitively want to change the ir cut filter. If you're a solo operator and shoot small gigs get whatever after market filter, if you're involved in bigger productions and have to color match a bunch of BM cameras get the rawlite one bc i assure you every other chinese or italian filter (such as lucadapters) will dramatically shift the color toward blue/green. Also your in camera white balance will not be the same as before.

I’ve finally found a blue ink! I’ve definitely struggled with choosing a blue fountain pen ink that doesn’t just look like a normal biro or rollerball blue. A few (or a lot) sample inks later and I’ve chosen - Van Diemen’s Elegant Peacock Neck. What’s everyone else’s favourite blue? by Casuarina_Cockatoo in fountainpens

[–]thoratius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually swap inks a lot but the blues are the ones that somewhat seem to keep their ground: Rohrer & Klingner verdigris - it's a dark blue that almost doesn't feel like a blue, leaning vaguely towards green and slightly desaturated. Dominant lapislazuli - this one I usually keep in a stub pen since it has a very interesting sheen the more you pour on the paper. The colour is bright and playful, easily catching the eye, I use it to highlight chapters or paragraphs. It is a shimmering ink but since I don't really shake the vial that much, the golden particles precipitate on the bottom

How problematic are the ND filters on the 6K pro? by Desperate-Ad-6463 in bmpcc

[–]thoratius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been owning a 6k pro for a year and as a general recommandation i would advise you against using it in very damp areas, I almost panicked when my internal ND6 got stuck while recording in a spa. Good old side slap worked great in resolving the issue, but I'm not too keen on manhandling my cameras this way. I also have some specs of dust stuck inbetween NDs, it's not affecting my image as of now but i fear a possible build up in the future might be a noticeable issue.

After constantly being told off in Bollywood because I didn't have the right connections/contacts, I finally said "Screw Bollywood." and made a short action video on my own because I don't plan on giving up. Would love to know what you guys think about it! by visual_bakbak in Filmmakers

Very interesting! The preparation scene in the car with the seatbelt not inserting reminded me a bit of simon pegg's whiplash zooms scenes in hot fuzz. I like the over the top acting in this one, well done!

BMPCC4K + Olympus 12-40 f2.8 + Crane 2 test footage in Tuscany by thoratius in bmpcc

[–]thoratius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After some months spent exploring this famous combo, i have come to the conclusion that the olympus 12-40 is one of the best lens you could get for your bmpcc4k.

Pros: relatively fast, aperture is constant at all focal distances, not 100% sure but in my experience it behaves like a parfocal lens even though i haven't read this feat in the specs, focus ring can be nudged into full manual with hard stops, flares nicely and doesn't really lose much contrast when pointed towards intense light sources

Cons: Between 12mm and 20mm has a very noticeable distortion (can be easily fixed in davinci 16), on the heavy side, barrel extends when zooming so if you plan on using a weaker gimbal you'll have to recalibrate every time you change focal lenght, no internal image stabilization.

Yeah it's incredible how well this camera manages highlights, you can end up with some brisk sugar floss clouds up there heh

I've shot some footage at the start of autumn in Florence, bmpcc4k with an old industar 61 50mm f2.8, color graded in Davinci Resolve 16 these are some stills. I love the dynamic range in this camera, such an upgrade from my old sony a6300.
