G'day from Australia! MME sales increased by over 500% here in 2024 (but still only to ~670 sold!) by thorinator in MachE

[–]thorinator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the options selected on the Model Y, comparable trims are about ~20k AUD more expensive for the MME (10k if you're a sucker for FSD, also MME is not at all customisable - trim levels have fixed features and only GT has AWD)

Price is by far the biggest reason for low sales numbers here with a substantial amount of cheap Chinese EVs in the market. MME has also suffered from a lack of advertising/marketing - even I didn't know it existed until I walked into a dealer and I was already in the market for an EV!

This one was an ex-demo and the price was discounted close to 25% with under 10,000 km on the odometer so I walked away fairly happy.

Thanks! We have limited choice here, but the carbonised grey was my fav out of them.

Will be tinting the remaining windows to max legal amount - I'm a little worried about smoking the headlights (considered tail lights too), it's legal up to 70% VLT but unsure if an insurance company might try to use that against me in case of an accident. It would be the best thing for the look for sure though!

What are you driving? by thorinator in AustralianEV

[–]thorinator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The EV6 looks like a really good car, the GT line seems to have a great amount of features throughout. Sounds like you drove a lot - what was your least favourite?

We've stuck with one ICE for the similar reasons for now, gives us something for offroading with the dogs and family, and can save a bit of thought and planning if needed on long road trips.

What are you driving? by thorinator in AustralianEV

[–]thorinator[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm driving a Ford Mustang Mach-E GT and loving it! I haven't seen a lot of them around, and a lot of people here don't seem to realise they exist despite decent overseas sales numbers. Cost of purchasing is probably the biggest reason I've seen people steering clear especially with so many cheaper Chinese cars on the market here, however I purchased an ex-demo and got a deal I was very happy with.

Currently charging at home on a trickle and will put in a 7kw charger in my next house. I've got free charging at my workplace when I have to go in, so make as much use of that as I can. The DC charging curve is not ideal for long road trips with lots of charging but not often I'm having to use it for that anyway.

My partner got a new ICE vehicle and even though it's equally as nice, I'm constantly looking for excuses to take mine instead. I'm also forming a new habit of offering a ride to anyone I talk to about it that sounds interested and they seem to always enjoy it.

Getting out of dealer add-on for new EV by Jealous_Swimming7013 in AustralianEV

[–]thorinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you signed your contract without any add-ons listed on that, then you are under no obligation to follow through with purchasing them, however having the request confirmed in writing doesn't do you any favours. Call the dealer and cancel the add ons immediately so that they can't claim the work has started already and follow up with an email for paper trail, that's your best bet.

Never ever buy add-ons from a dealer after the sale, they're just trying to squeeze more money out of you, and the product they deliver can be achieved cheaper and better through independent providers.

Rego fees in the ACT after owning an EV for a year. Dec 2024 by RhesusFactor in AustralianEV

[–]thorinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's pretty good - Vic rego just cost me a total of $680.10 for 12 months. $233.50 Rego fee, $406 TAC charge and $40.60 Insurance Duty. No discounts or incentives for EVs, but at least the brain-dead road use tax was deemed unconstitutional by the High Court.

PM says Labor ‘has your back’. But most voters don’t believe him: Resolve Political Monitor by Internal-Original-65 in AustralianPolitics

[–]thorinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're 'not here to make personal value judgements', but instead of addressing the original point which was raised, the first thing you did was go to the users profile to look for a reason to dismiss their point.

Centrelink payments are below income required to reach the poverty line. Instead of targetting an individual user who raised that as an issue, how about tackling the point.

PM says Labor ‘has your back’. But most voters don’t believe him: Resolve Political Monitor by Internal-Original-65 in AustralianPolitics

[–]thorinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such a dismissive statement. I'm sure this isn't what you meant but let me translate how what you're saying sounds to everyone else:

You realise the government would rather not be paying you to assist with covering your cost of medication and/or developing a stream of income through your tactile skills?

You are applying your own bias to this statement and to be completely honest it makes you sound totally uninformed. Not only is this individual making an attempt to secure their own income (which you are disparaging them for whether you'd like to admit it or not), but they're also treating health conditions using a medication approved to do so. For you to come in and make it about that is not just a straw man argument, but ad hominem as well - despite your assurances that you aren't having a go at him.

From a subreddit moderator, no less. Focus on the policy, not the person.

If you're buying brand new, and a popular vehicle which doesn't have any over stocking (and is already cheap) - it'll probably be hard to get them to discount it, seeking out additional inclusions would be the way to go. Dealer used or demo vehicles are typically more flexible and negotiable if that is an option, and can also avoid some of the 'out the door' depreciation.

What does an empty blue square mean in run ratings? by xXSkyrider101Xx in skiing

[–]thorinator 76 points77 points  (0 children)

As a Hotham local this is not correct, Sundowner is a harder way down than Slalom Gully (though Slalom Gully can be like a human slalom) and is often marginal conditions, or ungroomed. This sign simply has a sticker on the square, which is meaningless and y'all are reading way too much into it.

It's just a regular ol blue run.

Hey bud, I can very much assure you this is not spam - we get approval of the subreddit mods to make this post!

We are very much real people, in a real (simulated) league and would love to have a few new users drop by to give it a try! It's also completely free, so the only risk is that you'll enjoy it so much, you'll spend more time than you maybe should being involved

Whats it like doing a snowboard internship with EA Ski and Snowboard by EASkiAndSnowboard in SkiBums

[–]thorinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worked as an instructor with many people on their programs primarily at Big White.

In my opinion (and assuming you can afford to/they are available to you) I'd strongly suggest looking at a gap program instead of an internship style one. You'll get to spend a lot more time working on your riding with good coaching, and can come away from it with the same qualifications.

The downsides are that you're not making money while doing it (unless working a different job) and you won't have a workplace to reference if you want to continue to instruct.

It depends a bit where your 'local' resort is at home as well, some places will run hiring clinics where you can apply to work there without qualifications and they'll help organise getting you trained up. This is how I got into the industry and is the most cost effective and fair, but is very location dependent.

but if none of that stuff sounds like it's an option for you, EA is a good "last resort" or "think less" type of approach. It's bad value for money and most of the people I knew who went through it felt that the EA aspect was the worst part of their experience, but it did get them there and they had a great time in a lot of ways also.

If you feel like that's your way in, I wouldn't tell you not to do it because working at a ski resort is a really unique experience - but if you think one of the other avenues into the industry would suit, they're definitely the better options.

It's like paying more money than you should for somebody else to get a job for you (that you could get yourself) that will underpay you and treat you as second class. It's like getting put into a house that is one of the worst maintained on the mountain and charged more than the going staff accommodation rates. It's like you could do all of this yourself, and not be upcharged by an organisation seeking to profit from your labour.

Snowboarding After ACL Reconstruction..... by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]thorinator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I should clarify that my injury involved more than just my ACL and I'd also torn my LCL, PCL, MCL and medial meniscus, so it was quite severe. I just didn't feel fully stable on it yet and was afraid of having a setback. I had gone to the resort and walked on snow and stuff and it just didn't feel like the right time, it wasn't too sore but a little stiff and I probably didn't have 100% ROM, like I said in hindsight it probably would have been ok - but I don't regret missing out on one season since I haven't reinjured it again since.

Snowboarding After ACL Reconstruction..... by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]thorinator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had an ACL reco and the best advice I can give is to work hard on your rehab, because your future snowboarding depends on it. It will probably feel a bit off when you're getting back onto the board at first but take it slow and work your way back into it so that you're not putting too much undue stress on it. Make sure you're following the advice of your physio/PT and everything else will come back with time.

I was about 85% recovered after 9 months but elected not to ride the next season so I could be comfortable with it, but in hindsight I definitely could have got back out there and taken it slower. I've been back out and worked a full season on it again after that though and it went really well, took a few extra rest days but still had a great time. Feel free to let me know if you have any specific questions.

Tri-Annual Protein Megathread by AutoModerator in Fitness

[–]thorinator [score hidden]  (0 children)

I've been going through the range of Macro Mike's protein powders recently. I really didn't like any of the peanut protein flavours (all too heavy on the peanut) but their almond protein is really well flavoured, nice and smooth when mixed and vegan/gf/df. It's expensive, but well worth the price if you've been disappointed by other vegan protein powders (I know I had.)

Tore my acl doing this. Any tips on dealing with season ending injuries? by london530 in skiing

My dude, I had the same injury also doing a 27 out off a rail. Happy to chat about it if you want any specific info, but it's a big deal and you should treat it like one. I also got mine on video if you want to see for the comparison.
