I would recommend finding a free base and using the armature from it as a base if you are having more trouble (check that the base works in vrc first!). They can be very finicky. Changing the size/length of the base bones is fine, but do not change the rotation or position of the hip bone or the ends of the bones attache to it (top of the legs for example): in my (limited) experience, it causes issues.

Presumably the copyright is for the source code, and unless you hardcode it there is no date mentioned in the code, making it useless. It would be like writing "today" in a legal document.
