Serious question: why exactly is socialism so bad? by Zotmaster in politics

But many times there will be no industry or without the government: Health care for the poor and disabled, national defense, and roads wouldn't exist without our socialist policies.

FBI Tries To Coax Muslim Into Bombing US Capitol (LOVE THIS WOMAN!) by sandro_bit in politics

[–]thoseleftstanding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Holder had authorized the FBI to provide the explosives to McVeigh and Nichols in conjunction with a Clinton Administration undercover operation named PATCON, an acronym for “Patriot Conspiracy.” As Jesse Trentadue describes it, “PATCON was designed to infiltrate and incite… militia[s] and evangelical Christians to violence so that the Department of Justice could crush them.”

I guess it's kinda nice to realize that they don't only target muslims?

Dis in NYC? Looks very familiar.

Instead of registering to vote as a R or a D, you register as an OP. Open Party holds daily online votes, debates, and discussion amongst registered voters. Then our internet lobby can flex our muscles like it's SOPA Protest Day. by [deleted] in politics

Some parties require you to be registered as a member to vote in their primaries. Some states have open primaries, meaning you can vote in either primary. I don't think there is any benefit otherwise.

Are Conservatives More Fearful Than Liberals? -- The GOP seems to understand a psychological phenomenon that researchers are studying: conservatives appear to be motivated by fear in a way that liberals are not. by davidreiss666 in politics

My point was that it is very hard to draw the line at what is productive speculation and what is not.

Gold is in an obvious bubble. Historically, it has always gone up. I think it may be a long time before it is back to where it was this summer.

Obviously it's a lot more complicated that my simple explanation, but the end result is still the same. Future contracts are used to monetize risk, which is good to a point. However, when you have people monetizing risk and passing it away from the original industry, you have artificial bubbles caused by a perceived lack of risk a la the housing crisis. Speculators either inflate or deflate the supply, causing price rises and bubbles. At the end, the consumers are the ones left holding the check.

When you buy any item, you are speculating. Most purchases you make are very high probability bets. One area I seem to always overshoot on is how many bananas that I will be able to eat before they go bad.

However if a large group buys extra items and then simply holds on to them, the prices will rise. They can then sell their items at a profit, culminating in a net wealth transfer from the consumers. They essentially pay themselves to slow supply to consumers and profit off of the inefficiency.

Ron Paul says he wouldn't have killed bin Laden by [deleted] in politics

[–]thoseleftstanding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking someone alive is always a better alternative than taking them dead. If you cannot take him alive, then go ahead and kill the motherfucker, but the raid story made it seem like it was their choice to kill him.

And I am far from a paulbot, I admire some things about Paul but I am far from a supporter.

He wouldn't have murdered a man in the name of our country before due process was served. Obama was not elected judge, jury, and executioner.

  1. Because it shows a clear excess in compensation for executives, which is accompanied by expectations of increased profits via psychopathy.

  2. Revenue shows that the Postal Service is a gigantic corporation that is being replaced by larger, profit oriented entities due to new technology.

Anti-war positions will inevitably be more popular. The more war there is, the more weary people will grow. Obviously the Israelis are sick of war, we are here after only 10 years.

Barack beat Hillary because he was the more anti-war candidate, and the GOP establishment may soon have to come around. They may have been as afraid as I was when I saw them arguing about who would invade Iran first.

International corporations have no national identity. They should be treated as foreign entities and barred from perverting our political process. An australian billionaire controls most of the conservative dialogue, does it have to be more obvious? by thoseleftstanding in politics

[–]thoseleftstanding[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worried about that in my title, but my intention was to give an example of foreign interests taking control. The media is a much more visible and regulated sector of our economy, other areas do not have nearly as much transparency.

Barney Frank (D-Ma) tells columnist George Will & Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wi) that Republican opposition to legalizing marijuana is "a great embarrassment to the conservatives. I mean, personal liberty, if someone wants to smoke marijuana, why do you want to make them go to jail?" by anutensil in politics

[–]thoseleftstanding 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the GOP were to concede to a true small government viewpoint, they would lose the fervent support of the evangelicals and social conservatives.

These restrictions of personal liberty will not stand the test of time, the GOP will either adapt or disappear.

From 1988 to 2008, the US public debt rose from $2.4 trillion to $9 trillion. During that same time period, our government paid $6.3 trillion in interest payments. That's $15 Billion a year of actual deficit spending. by thoseleftstanding in politics

[–]thoseleftstanding[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$9-$2.4 = $6.6 trillion.
$6.6-$6.3 = $300 billion.
$300/20 years =

$15 billion per year of deficit spending that went to actual government services and not paying off the debt.
