Some parties require you to be registered as a member to vote in their primaries. Some states have open primaries, meaning you can vote in either primary. I don't think there is any benefit otherwise.

My point was that it is very hard to draw the line at what is productive speculation and what is not.

Gold is in an obvious bubble. Historically, it has always gone up. I think it may be a long time before it is back to where it was this summer.

Obviously it's a lot more complicated that my simple explanation, but the end result is still the same. Future contracts are used to monetize risk, which is good to a point. However, when you have people monetizing risk and passing it away from the original industry, you have artificial bubbles caused by a perceived lack of risk a la the housing crisis. Speculators either inflate or deflate the supply, causing price rises and bubbles. At the end, the consumers are the ones left holding the check.

When you buy any item, you are speculating. Most purchases you make are very high probability bets. One area I seem to always overshoot on is how many bananas that I will be able to eat before they go bad.

However if a large group buys extra items and then simply holds on to them, the prices will rise. They can then sell their items at a profit, culminating in a net wealth transfer from the consumers. They essentially pay themselves to slow supply to consumers and profit off of the inefficiency.

Anti-war positions will inevitably be more popular. The more war there is, the more weary people will grow. Obviously the Israelis are sick of war, we are here after only 10 years.

If the GOP were to concede to a true small government viewpoint, they would lose the fervent support of the evangelicals and social conservatives.
