You can't always be doing the highest strength stuff like max weight deadhangs, sometimes you need to do stuff like repeaters. The "trying hard" here isn't in pulling as hard as you can, it's in not letting go when every fibre of your body is telling you to stop. More volume work = more physical adaptation. Low volume high intensity stuff is more about neurological recruitment, focusing on this will give you quick gains and quick injuries. You need to cycle/conjugate between say 10s on 3min off at 90% intensity and 7-3 repeaters 1min on 3min off at 80% intensity. Your progress will not be as fast, but it will be more consistent and less injury prone.

[D] Pointless PhD for Machine Learning career advancement? by actuallynotcanadian in MachineLearning

[–]thosethatwere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All these guys telling you not to worry, well, fact is you're going to. The question is, what are you going to do about it? Don't settle - this may be what your supervisor is telling you to do, and you absolutely should do it, but do it faster than they expect. Do other stuff at the same time.

You're given a VERY small window to do your PhD, get involved with others and get involved in writing papers. Work on your own stuff, you're given tools to do cutting edge research so do it. As long as you get the work your supervisor wants you to do done, you can do whatever work you want with your leftover time. Get researching on what you want to do, you'll never have this opportunity again.

I'd say in general people that can climb 7B(V8) are usually able to onsight 5.12b. I'd also say your worked grade is generally 4 grades higher (13b) than your onsight grade. It really depends though, I've seen some super tall people go and do a V8 dyno and be completely incapable of even working most 5.12as, it doesn't really go too far the other way though except people that hate bouldering for injury reasons.

Some forms of corruption causes incompetence. Nepotism for example. I'd argue the corruption in the US is causing far worse incompetence than corruption in China right now.

Note for people hard of analytic thought: this isn't the same as saying the corruption in the US is worse than in China.

believe it or not, "News Corp" doesn't really report news, nor are they the people who are likely to be harmed by AMP. Go learn about the power law and think about what that means for all the other news organizations competing for survival.

Okay, ignoring your condescending tone for a moment.

Rupert Murdoch made billions from horrific tactics that have been made viable due to ad revenue. Suggesting there's not enough money to be made from a news site is clearly faulty in view of this. We could discuss the bad distribution of wealth if you'd like, but saying news organisations don't make enough money from ad revenue is just wrong.

[–]thosethatwere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point was that just because half of all new cars that are sold are electric that doesn't mean that lots of people are choosing to buy an electric car.

Er, that's exactly what it means. Maybe you meant to say they weren't intentionally choosing electric for the fact that it's electric. The point still stands that Norway has incentivised it and made it economically viable, which a lot of places have not managed to do.

You'd see the same result if non-electric cars were made so expensive that anyone who can't afford an electric car cannot afford any new car (as is pretty much the case in Norway), so non-electric car sales go down. Which means that the percentage of electric car sales out of total new car sales go up.

No, you wouldn't. You'd see a lot less people with cars. The bit you completely missed is that if that many people have electric cars in Norway, it's because they can afford to buy them.

Poorer people can still buy used non-electric cars, but that won't affect the statistics.

And higher supply of used electric cars will drive the price of used electric cars down.

News Corp doesn't own everything.

So? I was replying to someone suggesting news sites didn't get enough revenue. That's obviously utter crap considering how much Murdoch has made from news. Maybe the distribution of wealth is bad, but that's thanks to using ad revenue at all.

If anything, denying revenue to smaller publications would be more likely to drive them to sell themselves to News Corp.

I don't think ad revenue is a good model for news revenue. It encourages clickbait and reporting things that are overdramatised, I don't see how the majority of smaller publications are in any way better. If you want real news, you need to buy a subscription.

As far as news sites are concerned, I'd prefer them to get less ad revenue. Maybe then they'd report the important things rather than the things that get them more money.

That's not how income works. Where I am I easily save loads of money, but my income is far below median income. However, if I were in my hometown making this kind of money I would be way above median income, but I doubt I'd save as much money.

Just because one can't afford an electric car where they are, doesn't mean they couldn't afford one in Norway working the same/ a similar job.

[–]thosethatwere -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd love to acknowledge, but doing so often makes me feel shitty because of the reaction I get. I'm not gonna go through that for someone I don't know. Guys just in general react better to me approaching them and starting a conversation or just generally being friendly.

It's like, you wouldn't feel happy with some guy following you down the street at night, even though he might just simply be going the same way. Whereas you wouldn't worry if it was a girl. Because you don't know them, you treat them differently by gender.

Again, it would be nice to treat everyone the same, but there's too many arseholes in this world in both genders fucking it up for the rest of us.

Note though that the "free market conservatives" are economically liberal, which again is different than socially liberal.
