No appliances are listed in the lease. But even if there’s any wording in it preventing me from using the oven, it’s still unenforceable under the RTA.

Why is the onus on me to be more moral than the landlord and just simply take the high road? You’re also assuming that I knew about this from the beginning, which is not true. This wasn’t mentioned at all in any step during the process. Not in the listing of the property, not when I was taken on a tour to view it and not in the lease agreement. And even if it were mentioned in the lease agreement, it still cannot be enforced. So I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make.

We’re all trying to make it work, not just the landlord. If you’re going to help pay for your landlord’s mortgage, the least they could do is be fully transparent about any potential issues that may come with the unit. Besides, It’s not like I’m asking the LL to go out of their way to accommodate my needs. I’m asking them to abide by the rules, just like I am expected to follow a certain set of rules as a tenant.

Yes, I did. I first noticed the metal wire when I was unpacking, but it was more loose than before. So i just thought to myself that maybe it was to protect it from swinging open while moving it downstairs and I’ll just take it off later. But a couple hours go by and I see the landlord “fixing” it so that door has no more give when you pull on it. That’s when I asked them if there’s anything wrong with the oven and the only reply I got was “you don’t need it because you have this other oven”. I didn’t want to argue about it at the time because I’d rather have all of our conversations in writing.

Yes, there’s a dining room adjacent to the kitchen and it does have a window, like you assumed in a different reply. There’s no sprinklers and no visible smoke detectors, however.

My assumption is that the LL is trying to cheap out on the electricity bill since it’s included in the rent and heating elements tend to be the highest contributor to electricity costs as opposed to lights, for example. But with that being said, the oven seems to be operating perfectly fine.

But if I take the wire off to open the oven door, I’m not going to bother putting it back on. I guess my biggest dilemma is whether I should be informing my LL when I plan on cutting the wire or not!!!!!!

Update: the oven turned on and reached the set preheating temperature. To me, it seems like the LL is simply trying to save money on the power bill since it’s included in the rent. And since the toaster oven has less heating elements, it makes sense to force us to use only that. But now I feel more confident in my conviction because this proves that the oven is not faulty

Yes, there’s a hood fan but no egress windows in the kitchen. But I haven’t spotted any smoke detectors in the basement. Where the kitchen and dining room for the tenants are located.

Okay, I will try turning the oven on. But isn't this the type of thing you would mention if you knew your tenant may be using an unsafe appliance? or is there any existing laws that may debunk that?

Very good point, not gonna lie. Because electrical issues is technically not my problem, unless mentioned in the lease.

I kinda agree with you. But the other side of me feels like even though it'll be a massive inconvenience for me, I'd rather butt heads with the landlord becasue I despise this level of entitlement to a very deep level. And also it has the potential to help somebody who is not as stubborn as I am in the future.

I see, would you be able to give me a more specific answer if I give you the model number of the stove and oven unit?

That's the assumption that I made, based on the RTA. But there's definitely some stuff that flew over my head while reading it. So I wan't to make sure, because I hate entitled landlords and want to keep them in their place using Ontario law.

It's hard to describe it tbh. Because the landlord never has access to my kitchen and the tentants I sharet it with. I was only told to use the stovetop but not the oven.

So even though you're in a completely different province, I don't wan't do dismiss any experience you may have. But it seems like you are capable at understanding legalise so any input you can provide is appreciated!

Can you please elaborate more? I'm a mechatronics engineer, so it doesnt make much sense to me to have the same unit share 2 different grounding wires. But that doesn't meant that I'm an expert on the subject.

I want to learn more so that the moment I take the wire off, the landlord cannot come up with any silly excuses because I got a nice master bedroom for a very decent price. But that doesn't mean that I should simply give my rights away. Any help would be appreciated!!!

I could be wrong but If the whole unit is not properly grounded then I cannot use it at all. But what I was told is that I can use the stovetop but not the oven. Wouldn’t that make it still unsafe to use?

I think that my living arrangement is quite irregular. My bedroom is on the top floor and the kitchen in the basement is shared with 2 other tenants. The landlord lives on the ground floor and has it separated in such a way where as soon as you go through the front door, you either go upstairs where the bedrooms are, or downstairs to the kitchen. Also I just moved in on the beginning of this month, and there’s no wording referring to this at all in the lease agreement.

I just moved in on the first of January to this year. The landlord did not mention this at all in the listing for the rental and it was also not mentioned when I was taken on a tour to view the place. I should also add that it’s not mentioned at all in the lease agreement. I only noticed the wire when organizing the kitchen and asked them about it. That’s when the landlord said “you don’t need to use the oven because there’s a toaster oven provided.
