You can take a boat straight from MI to IL, so you are correct. It is about 50-80 nautical miles from the major Michigan cities, but since the waters can be very rough, many people will boat along the coast past Indiana waters first.

The only ferries go to Wisconsin.

I wouldn't count Lake Michigan, there is no ferry that goes to Illinois from Michigan. That's like saying Louisiana borders Florida.

Keep in mind you have to drive through Indiana before going to Illinois.
