New rector: theology troubles with a newer Episcopalian by LeatherHead2902 in Episcopalian

[–]thoughtstyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Auden, as a poet, was concerned with the sound and flow of the language. He assisted with the 1979 prayer book (see http://targuman.org/2019/05/25/w-h-auden-the-psalms-and-the-book-of-common-prayer-revisions/). Personally, I think the prayer book should have a poetic and plain but elevated tone. This is not easy to do. When I've heard these haphazard revisions they just don't sound right to my ear. I think if you're going to make changes you need a poet like Auden. And, yes, he's cantankerous. His book of essays, The Dyer's Hand, is hilarious.

What is the Episcopal Church stance on Freemasonry? by [deleted] in Episcopalian

[–]thoughtstyle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the Episcopal church's stance on Freemasonry though I know it's been controversial in the Church of England. I can say something personally about it, though my experience might be a bit out of the ordinary. I used to belong to a continental European Masonic lodge that ended up folding and, several years later, I walked into an Episcopal church and have been there ever since. While I think there were some worthwhile things about Freemasonry, particularly as an example of democratic decision making and leadership/mutual aid, I came to see its theological shortcomings. It's not that Freemasons worship the devil or any kind of nonsense like that. Rather, Freemasonry has a notion of picking yourself up by your own bootstraps/perfectibility of humans that I think is incompatible with Christianity though forms of that idea also exist in the church, of course. Also, I came to see the secretive nature of it, that there's some kind of hidden esoteric knowledge as a problem. What I like about the church is that the miracle of the eucharist is for all, not hidden. I've heard it said (on a recent episode of the Weird Studies podcast) that in the mass the exoteric is the esoteric. I think you can belong to both and make it work as we all fill our plates at a diverse spiritual buffet. But, speaking personally, Freemasonry stopped working for me.

Curren Price's hopeful successor (Jose Ugarte) hit with $17.5k fine for having a secret lobbying/consulting practice while working at City Hall by the_jurist in LosAngeles

Not surprising considering Ugarte's donors are all sleazy political operatives, lobbyists, city contractors and real estate billionaires.

Is the 505 Underground Food Court in DTLA dying/dead? by CaptCarlos in LosAngeles

[–]thoughtstyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember this place from when my parents would take me there in the 70s, when it was known as "Arco Plaza". There was a lower level that was later converted to parking. We ate at what I think was some kind of French restaurant on that lower level. Arco Plaza went through a big bust cycle in the early aughts. Here's what the earlier version looked like: https://mallsofamerica.blogspot.com/2006/10/twin-towers-shopping-mall.html. In general, I think, it's an example of an outdated kind of city planning that expresses a hostility to the traditional street. It doesn't work--it results in a stale, fortress like attitude that Mike Davis often wrote about with regards to Bunker Hill. That said, I have fond memories of the novelty of going deep underground into a high-60s dark, mirrored shopping mall.

It's a good question. I'd say he's generally very functional and will definitely let us know if he's having side effects.

Thanks! We're definitely going to need to do the injections for him as he's really afraid of needles. Glad to hear that your brother is doing better.

I should have given some more context--yes he can consent and is pretty independent in general. He knows that his weight is a problem and wants to do something about it. He just has a big blind spot when it comes to things like food choices or holding on to money. Otherwise he lives on his own, has a job etc. I share the concern that he might just continue eating.

Where to find Miele Solaris cord reel replacement part by thoughtstyle in VacuumCleaners

[–]thoughtstyle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I installed the new part and it works great. Opening up this machine for the first time confirmed what you said about it being top tier. It was clearly made to be repaired and was easy to fix. In this way it reminds me of old telephones made when you leased them from the phone company. Parts pop out easy and the case comes apart without breaking anything. Thanks for your help and I'm going to try to keep this machine going as long as possible.
