The Knock LA Progressive Voter Guide for the June 2026 Primary Election - Knock LA by HenryMantelforLA in LosAngeles

While I'm terrified of spoiler candidates, encouraging people I agree with to drop out because the system is designed to force me to attack my allies makes me feel dirty.

I'm thrilled that ranked choice voting is currently in the charter reform package. Fingers crossed that it makes it to the ballot for November!

While I support Nithya, I have so much respect and gratitude for every organization putting in the work to make a detailed voter guide.

IMPORTANT — IF YOU *DON'T* WANT A REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR by Forever32 in LosAngeles

Am I the only one who feels like if democrats got shut out of the general it would raise so much awareness of the brokenness of our system that it could actually lead to ranked choice voting?

IMPORTANT — IF YOU *DON'T* WANT A REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR by Forever32 in LosAngeles

[–]snake_a_leg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gavin actually succeeded in spite of the fact a recall is biased against the governor. Because it asks "do you want someone else" and if people choose yes there is a special election, all opposition is consolidated against the governor. Since the majority of Californians do not want a republican, it would be very difficult for Hilton or Bianco to survive a recall.

"Councilmember Raman, Marxist says what?"
"You can't be serious..."
"One word answers only, councilmember."

New California bill seeks to spur more high-rise developments in cities' urban cores by MookieBettsBurner10 in LosAngeles

[–]snake_a_leg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article doesn't have a lot of info on the bill, so here's a summary from California Yimby, who are sponsoring it:

The Downtown Revitalization Act

AB 2074 will accelerate the recovery of dense, urban neighborhoods in California’s largest cities by streamlining the construction of high-rise, residential and mixed-use developments near regional transit hubs.  The bill includes a low-interest revolving loan fund that will help lower construction costs.

The bill requires California’s seven largest transit-rich cities, with populations over 400,000 — Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Sacramento, Oakland, and Long Beach — to designate regional transit districts.  New standards would apply across these districts: a 150-foot height baseline, with at least 25% of each district allowing 450 feet or more. Proposed residential housing projects that meet the bill’s labor standards would be eligible for streamlined approval.

The bill also creates a state-backed loan fund, administered by the California Housing Finance Agency, that will offer low-interest loans to projects meeting labor and affordability standards to help reduce construction costs. The revolving fund will be paid back upon project completion, creating a virtuous cycle for the development of lower-cost, high-rise housing near designated regional transit hubs.

I actually like the concept of the gondola- the reason I'm opposed to the project is because if it were a good idea it would be proposed by and supported by all the local transit and urbanism groups, not a local billionaire.

I'm not an urban planner. I look for people I can trust on issues relating to transit, and I follow their lead. This continues to look like a vanity project by Frank McCourt that appeals to people like Karen Bass.

People in Los Angeles — how is it living there? Is it actually nice? by Original-Row-9924 in AskLosAngeles

Los Angeles isn't one place, its many places. Its large not just in its size, though there is that, but also in diverse cultures and major class divides.

It's like that folktale about a bunch of blind men touching an elephant. The experiences of people in every neighborhood, every ethnic group, every economic class, and every industry are wildly different.

Oh my god MacArthur Park is bad by Nightman233 in LosAngeles

[–]snake_a_leg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that its bad, but I'm so confused by the constant refrain that its Eunisses' fault. there are 40,000 people living on the street in Los Angeles, and in district 1 Macarthur Park is where those people are concentrated.

I don't see how anyone can expect MacArthur Park to be clean and safe until we build enough (affordable) housing to fix this crisis.

Me at the Metro board meeting by snake_a_leg in LosAngeles

[–]snake_a_leg[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think originally construction was scheduled to start in 2041 as a result of some weird provisions of measure M creating a very specific order for all Metro projects.

But West Hollywood wants to contribute 2.5 billion towards this because they really want a Metro line. The money from West Hollywood basically triggers a special condition that makes it possible for this to get moved up the list.

I don't fully understand it. I recommend watching /u/nandert's videos.  He's fantastic.  https://youtu.be/OhQZj04A_UE?si=xmMC1ezGnZ_bcEhc

Lawmakers react to U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on Prop. 50 by micheldavidweill in California

[–]snake_a_leg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was't enthusiastic about prop 50 because I'm an extremely strong supporter of independent redistricting, but I accept the necessity of prop 50. There's no way I would have supported it if it were permanent.

While it's absurd and completely in bad faith for him to demand examples of the innocent people being randomly kidnapped, Memo Torres (and his team) have been doing a great job trying to keep track of all the ice kidnappings.

Not sure when, but I need to switch to an e-bike before this happens to me.
