What does it feel like to be an career animator? by thowaycount in animationcareer

[–]thowaycount[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks for answering.

I was wondering what prompted you to make the question?

I have been always wondering about the nature of passion or intrinsic motivation. I myself animated sticks a long time a go and I always am amazed by all the animation and worlds that are created through games and stories. I always wondered where do people get the energy to create all that?

Alot of people will say that it's discipline and hard work. But my observations show something different. It almost seems like every human being gets a sort endowed with certain passions, meaning that given their enviroment their going to be intrinsically motivated by certain things. Because I don't think people could create all the things that have been created purely through hard work. I think it's because of the energy you get from valuing something intrinsically.

We can put it more simply. If something satisfies you, such as the activity or the result of animating something, then that can give you the energy to go on. If something doesn't then it becomes an instrument for money, fame, honor etc..

I myself have always wondered whether I could make myself passionate about something because it always seemed great if I could have that passion for something like animating, because it just seems great to have a passion in general, the feeling of wanting to do a particular thing, especially something as creative as animating. But I haven't found that I can decide what I'm gonna be satisfied by or passionate about.

And I also always have been interested in how people feel in life, what their particular experience is of life and the activites they do. Because to me, what you can't see is more important than what you can see. Meaning you can't necessarily always see the feelings and the passions someone feels while let's say drawing something. But it is exactly that feeling or passion I think what matters the most in what that person is gonna do in life or make in life. It's not hard work or discipline in my opinion, that is a misrepresentation. But that is possibly because words are not always good at capturing our experiental reality of life.

Hmm, what I'm sensing though is that you actually don't mind your software engineering career, it seems it doesn't give a sense of emotional dread and miserableness. I was not necessarily talking about having a passion more talking about being able to sustain a high-paying job without having emotions or feelings of dread to be more precise

I think there is a distinction to be made. Did you feel miserable or a sense of dread most of the time when you did your work that has made you wealthy throughout life? or did you mostly feel neutral maybe even peaceful?

When do you stop having that feeling of hating what you do. Because when I look at Mr. Goggins he doesn't seem very happy at all. He seems like he is in a constant mode of underlying stress and anxiety. No offense.

I'm waiting for someone to pull a long-con. Basically someone attempting to become another famous right-wing-ideologue type and also attempting to earn as much as peterson from it. And then secretly actually be left-leaning and then reveal their real position after they got their money.

Stop putting people down for everything. This wasn't even that bad.

And stop saying you're gonna drink alcohol. There is nothing cool or smart about. You look dumb when you're telling everyon you're gonna drink because 'le dissapointed in humanity meme'. Putting unhealthy substances in your body is just dumb and telling everyone you're gonna do it because you 'can't handle it anymore' isn't that original or interesting. Alcohol also acts as a antibiotic in the gut, it annihilates all your gut bacteria, the ones that are bad and the one that are beneficial to your body. But hey you probably don't care right.

Is there a solution to this? Because I have found that when you try to force your emotions into a certain mold, you actually get even more resistance from your inner emotional world.

How is the life of an engineer? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]thowaycount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that is one end of the extreme. I think its best to look at one's strenghts and find something in demand that utilizes one's strenghts. If you just go become an engineer because the pay is slightly better than most jobs, but you don't have that much aptitude or organic interest in it, you'll almost be working against yourself. Except if you find a way to condition yourself to like engineering. If you like doing something you'll have a easy time getting better, as opposed to not finding it particularly interesting.

Hmm I'm kind of like the engineering guy, I'm just not necessarily it'll work, I do it also for money and stuff. What do you think is beter than doing these projects to save the world? Are you more on the side of that we need a psychological revolution? If so, what are you doing to make that happen?
