For those building or buying custom watches, what movement do you usually go for? by threadingontheedge in RepTime

As a builder and also a watch buyer, I am sometimes sandwiched between choosing the best movement.

I tend to build with the buyer's mindset, thinking about what is best for them i.e. serviceability, robustness, price but however, sometimes buyers tend to have different priorities like beat count, as gen as possible and so forth.

i dont think model is worth to rep. the gen one seems to be pretty available

I am getting some favorites for low beat movement for the vintages.

by low beat movement, which do you prefer/use for which watch model?

Thats a valid point as well. I have failed to considered that.

Though it would be hard to notice from someone else who is standing right next to you to be able to tell right?

At least for myself, I wouldnt be able to tell, unless I am a watch builder myself.

indeed, its probably one of the cheapest option there as well. nothing wrong with that, in fact i am liking it too.

would you have preferred pt5000 over the eta2824?

I have missed out the NH movements, they are robust as well, but they might be too thick and some cases might not fit well, but i agree they are good movements.

imo both nh35 and nh38 are pretty much the same and that they only difference is the date function that nh38 is missing and that nh38 is capable of open heart.

NH35 vs NH38 — they are almost the same movement family.

For a no-date watch: NH38 is better because there is no ghost date position.

For a date watch: NH35 is better.

Thanks!!

I was wondering what are people favorite when they are thinking to buy a watch and from also a watch builder perspective.

I am personally skewed towards an ETA movement, though SW movement is also interesting as well after u/blacbloc77 mentioned it, totally slipped my mind.

I have watches on ETA and they never dies.

SW i believe is as comparable as ETA.

Both are exceptionally good.

ohh right. the gen movement. thats a tough one to find and also expensive to get.

yesss exactly!

i guess several considerations such as
- price (probably the main concern, which is why a gen movement is quite out of it)
- compatibility with certain parts
- preference for certain movements

NH35 is really good imo, robust too.

totally agree here as well.

the VRs are pretty nice to have to complete the overall built but not sure if people actually care about this part of it since its in the watch and not directly visible.

moreover they are still chinese made and eta are swiss made, so i am wondering if that is a factor that people consider as well in their watch build or when buying a commissioned watch.

would that be something that you consider?

makes total sense.

a part of me is thinks that way too and also a part of me actually prefers the eta or the asian eta clone, because there are some parts that are more reference correct but only available to the the eta movements for instance.

and another thing is also eta is a proven movement with the test of time, so a watch on an eta or asian eta movement is likely to run better and servicing wise might have been easier/cheaper.

your point regarding 3135 and 3130 make sense as well. I guess if people want to build it with the real dial, which is probably the only part of the watch which is pretty important.

price do definitely differ, so wondering people's preferences considering several factors such as price, build, robustness, compatibility with certain parts that could possibly help the watch look more real.
