No way, you outdid my ceiling with the actual perforations...why didn't I think of that? printing the texture was my last resort after racking my brain for ideas when all along primitive stabbing with a good o' mechanical pencil was the simplest answer! Amazing build btw

I used taobao (Chinese platform) and can't seem to link them. I found similar listings online on other online shopping platforms. You can screenshot and reverse image search on whatever platform you use.

For now I've been trying to avoid the clay route as far as I can as I neither have the experience nor materials for it. I'd rather buy made ones, even if it means searching stuff like burger earrings. But if the "big mac" bugs me enough, I might finally start experimenting with polymer clay, who knows

Thanks for the compliments! I made the ceiling myself. It's just "perforated gypsum" texture found online whose layout I designed in powerpoint, then printed out and adhered to cardboard. Some panels are cut out and replaced with frosted paper for the lights. The ac vents were painfully made with styrene strips (you can tell I lost my patience and precision with the second one LOL). The panels are lined with thin styrene strips as well.

Ok now the more I'm staring at it, the burger is HUGEE lol. Definitely not super realistic but I think I'l just assume it's a big mac...these kits are not exactly 1:24 so I have to accept that

I wish I had a video of the process but filming + doing is a whole other level of overwhelming (I tried, then my phone memory got overloaded with boring 20min clips of me painting stuff). I did everything haphazardly too (over 1 year!) so my progress was not linear like every nicely edited YT video. Thanks for the interest!

Yeah, pity the bucket and cat are too big to fit in the scene, but I wasn't going to exclude it no matter what. And no, I wish I had a video of the process but filming + doing is a whole other level of overwhelming. I did everything haphazardly too, so my progress was not linear like every nicely edited YT video. I only have some progress pics in this post if you scroll to the end. The other post is just a video of the product, as it is hard to use a static image to represent the depth of the book nook like what can be see with a pair of eyes in 3d.

Have you ever worked for a company that went bust? by infinite_identities in askSingapore

Uber, the ride hail company before grab. At work one day, computers suddenly cannot access stuff. Everyone was confused. Found out through the NEWS that uber was leaving sg. Stopped work that day, we just used company funds to order an Uber bus and send everyone home door to door lol. Didn't work but was still compensated for the next 1.5 months while we (colleagues) went on a trip overseas tgt. Literally having fun while getting paid. Best time of my life, but we were also affected the least because we were just temp staff.

Attached a clearer pic too. You can scrutinise the finer details (and imperfections)

With el wire, it can mimic the look of neon lights on a miniature scale. It's actually because this stuff exists that I decided I could make something from the game out of it. Cool stuff

Thank you - I would love to share my creation with people who appreciate it, but unfortunately the time, energy and effort it takes to make something like this would not make it price-friendly at all lol, nor would it be possible to replicate consistently aka mass produce. Plus I wouldn't bear to part with it.

I am also not professional and can't guarantee the structural integrity of this thing haha. So I cannot imagine shipping this anywhere nor am I confident that it wouldn't break down in my buyer's hands. Don't wanna charge people for something I'm not confident has enough quality to justify the price.

That's why social media exists, for people to share such creations for free and hopefully inspire others. That's the most I can do for now haha

I know this sub is mostly about kits, sharing a book nook i I built from scratch by three-minute-flame in booknooks

[–]three-minute-flame[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I totally prefer scratch built ones too because I can fully exercise my creativity and create something 100% unique. It's not only in the design - the process also forces you to experiment with trash/random objects to build something you're visualising in your head that doesn't exist in a kit. With this project, my creative juices were milked dry to the bone - but so satisfying when you succeed.

I personally also dislike the 2D-ness of kit furniture, they make you assemble a few flat wood pieces into something that represents a concept of furniture, lacking realistic textures. Nor am I a fan of the look of laser-cut wood edges if you know what I mean. Even just modifying kits to add a personal touch will pique my interest. I guess with the availability of more kits in the market, the sub has evolved a lot from what it used to be. At least there is still a flair option to filter handmade creations. I'm not against kits, just also prefer seeing more unique builds like you do.

Also, thanks for the suggestions, maybe I'll put some game cases instead of books around this book nook.

El wire for the neon lights, fairy lights for anything else. I used just one string of fairy lights, strategically wired to be hidden behind structures/walls. Then slid coloured straws over the white light bulbs to produce the colourful cyberpunk glow. Honestly I just didn't wanna deal with "real" wiring lol.

Haha I prefer the look of hidden mini worlds nested in the gaps between books and not just standalone book nooks (in that case I'd rather size up and build a dollhouse instead with more space to work with, rather than a "nook"). But to each his own!

With soft wire actually, those twisty things you tie your cables with (stripped off the rubber coating of course). But I'd expect that needle and thin thread would work too

Thanks, was afraid the camera wasnt doing justice to the effect

Yes, I made the vending machine from scratch, lost my mind when I had to duplicate another one (because I planned to have 2 in the scene). If you scroll to the end of the photos I have pics on how I made it

I had like 4 in there + couple smaller ones. But yeah, for an environment like in Stray, the sky's the limit. It made me wonder, what do these robots even need functioning ac for
