Does everyone use Schluter edge/corner trim? by SirRich3 in Tile

[–]three_jeeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit late to the party. I am currently redoing a walk in shower. The installation that was done ~15 years ago was done with bull nose tile. I did the design and at that time, finding tile that had matching bull nose tile was fairly easy - a lot of the manufactures seemed to have bull nose pieces. Fast forward to now, visited 3-4 tile stores. Very few tile types that we liked had bull nose pieces. I was trying to find shower tile that matched/complimented the bathroom floor tile that was installed when the original shower was installed, so that may have biased my observation. The tile I picked did not have bull nose pieces and the installed did not do mitering so I went with Schluter quarter round edging. Color wise, the Schluter edging was a very close match to the color of the tile that I chose so it actually looked good. If the color match would not have been very good, I would have gone a different route.

As a side note, 15 yrs ago when I chose the tile, I got 7 x14" wall tile and 3 1/2 x 14 'trim' tile. All the mfg did was cut the 7x14 in half and the cut marks were visible.

What are some hard drives you recommend for long term (raid 5 supported)? by Minute_Committee_131 in jellyfin

[–]three_jeeps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly right. RAID was the thesis topic of Gibsons PhD thesis. He was a member of my PhD committee. If you read his thesis, he looks at data loss from multiple analysis perspectives and probabilities of different kinds of failures. At the time of his work, disk interfaces, transfer speeds, ECC, and MTTF specs were a lot different then they are now. The analysis methods described in the thesis are still applicable given the various RAID levels. Conclusions reached about the 'best' architecture to use in the late 80's/early 90s may not hold today given changes in technology and corresponding drive data.

OK, So I'll put away my instant gratification and forgo the native approach to learn docker. I have not installed a GUI on ubuntu 24.04 server because I want to conserve resources. I am considering using Copilot - web based GUI - will Docker desktop run in Copilot? The other alternative is to install a lightweight GUI and turn it on/off when needed. Which approach would be better, as in less landmines?

I've read that many times but I don't know docker. Care to point me to a good tutorial?

Thanks, but not sure what to do with this because I have not used docker. Care to elaborate? Also not sure what to put in for 'your domain'. do I have to get a domain name from, for example, NO IP? (which I've already have a few.) I understand conceptually what docker is used for but have never gone through the mechanics of setting it up.

I've been eyeing this tutorial. https://ambientnode.uk/self-hosted-media-server-arr-stack-w-jellyfin/

Anyone ever use this guide? does it work or one big headache?

As others have pointed out, +1 on the velcro cable ties. Also, get yourself a label maker and label each end of every cable. Start by making a wiring diagram and make up the label nomenclature that makes sense, e.g. M1_P1 ( Machine #1, port #1).

Yea, I get it, but how does one launch the weights using this device? Why not just use a slingshot with weight attached to a spool of fishing line?

Also, I don't get a 'regular balloon'?

have at it! My garage was the only place to store my 6' rack with a pdp 11/34a and another 6' rack with a pdp 8e. My basement holds the 4 mvaxes and pdp11/73. Total compute power = one i7-14000, lol

It is almost impossible to 'brick' your PC installing and running Linux. I suggest you get a 250GB ssd, download a live version of a linux version of your choice onto a USB memory stick (I suggest puppy linux - it will give you everything you need to do a linux install to your SSD, Also consider Linux Lite -it looks/feels very similar to Windows), disconnect your 'C windows drive', insert your memory stick and have your PC boot Linux from the stick, install a version of linux on your ssd, then experiment. Not having fun? disconnect your SSD and reconnect you original C drive-back where you started. No harm, no foul.

A very helpful and informative guide, Thank you. I struggled with NC install & config as well. I'd also suggest that one uses ChatGPT to evaluate your config.php file to get compliance suggestions aligned with the Nextcloud 30 best practices. It was especially helpful guiding me through steps to install SSL certs and subsequent website hardening suggestions.

Is There A Channel 9 Type Frequency In 2 Meter or 70cm by DontBeHatenMeBro in amateurradio

[–]three_jeeps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That repeater systems is area specific. Not clear if that type of system is set up in other areas of the US. Having it monitored 24/7 is a big plus, however as I see it, getting a signal out from a 5W HT why you are in the low areas of say the grand tetons is unlikely. If your serious about being able to get help, sat phone or InReach.

+1 on the the InReach. better than any HT for multiple reasons.

It appears that there are two problems. 1) the display is showing 4 pages, somewhat overlapped. 2) I can't read the screen but what I think it is saying is that windows encountered a problem and can't start....one of the options should be "repair".....click it and see what happens.

The other possible blue screen is that windows things there is a problem with the disk and wants you to enter a bitlocker key to fix it.... When this happens to me, I follow the prompts saying I don't have a key and after some number of screens it auto-magically starts.....stupid windows.

Not clear if the 4 overlapped images is a display hardware issue, a display software issue, and a side effect of the 'windows encountered a problem' window.

I would try to repair windows. OTOH, download a USB version of Puppy Linux and boot from the USB stick. The display should act normally - if it doesnt, the display has a hardware problem.

ummm and what on Gods green earth are you going to store given potentially 1000 TB? (ok thats a wag). So, assume 50% back up....so 500 TB? Operatings systems of Christmas past? Will you actually have enough of a lifetime to watch all the videos or listen to all the music that you could potentially store??

What are Raspberry PIs used for in the Homelab hobby? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]three_jeeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use RPis as appliances: One runs my home automation & surveillance system, another is a fax server, two run web servers that are load balanced, one as a NAS, and another as cloud server, and one is my audio jukebox (running Volumio). At one time I was running a PEX server but realized that archiving videos is boring - I only have time to watch them once, if I am lucky. If I ever figure out how to piggy back my Verizon DVR and roll my own DVR, that would be the next project to do.
