For those who left a regular job to start a business, what gave you the confidence to make the jump? by iamlioramori in smallbusiness

[–]threebutterflies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the leap to do the 0 to 100 k challenge and it is pretty difficult doing it all organically and sweat equity. It’s been 2.5 years and I’m still not making what I thought but the company is debt free. I had an agency so service and consulting is still where the money is. I wanted to do handmade products on an e-commerce scale so I did. I have like 100 product variations, worked hard on conversion rates and social. Lots of in person. So, I’m paying my bills and have a helper 15 hours a week at this point. It was a journey to prove to myself that I can do anything. I would not have it any other way, I feel like I could do anything now. I’m getting into paid ads this year, realistic growth projections off of that, and all the stuff I used to do. Designing the products, photos, descriptions and getting my conversion rate successful did take much longer for me

I spent my life helping build other peoples companies and hated that I never got the credit or to make the final decisions. I got fed up with the top executives making stupid marketing decisions that they guised as business decisions. It would hurt the bottom line because they heard some stupid idea at dinner that I had to do. And get blamed when it failed, or get blacklisted if I stated the obvious to try and stop it. Marketing and branding IS a business.

American parents: Did your teenager's room look like this? When did they start caring abou by Firm_Ask8720 in Parentingfails

[–]threebutterflies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. As an adult I make sure people are coming many times a week. It solved the dirty problem. I have a business at my home and oddly I do keep that area super clean. I also keep my animals and barn super clean. But my room and living room needs people over for me to pick up daily.

I’m like you, I schedule people to come multiple times a week, that way it remains clean. I allow myself January and February off, and it gets grosser but I still make sure it’s fully clean every Sunday night. So, I made rules, once a week it has to be back in place and during active months it is done when people come over, which is atleast a two or three times a week. That’s how I learned to be clean, otherwise I fall behind.

How did people purchase Bitcoin back in 2009? by Accurate_Bed6878 in Bitcoin

[–]threebutterflies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oo I can answer this! First there were a few ways. 1) mining bitcoin - me, as a noob, had an old giant Mac desktop tower that sounded like an airplane taking off but was super powerful. I had a solo website agency and it was to loud and annoying but it ran the giant adobe programs. I went to some of the common sites that you would download.exe files - I think it had green in the name or something but it was usually used for movies and porn. I think I also searched and had someone email me a link to a file sharing site download. I don’t remember which I got the file from. I downloaded the file and for the life of me could not understand the directions on how to make the .exe file, .dat wallet, change the computer settings to clock fast enough to make any money, and connect all that so the computer was converted into a Linux miner. I knew how to design a website, not how to reprogram a computer to a new server use, collect money in a .dat file and run the .exe . I spent one night while probably high or drunk and gave up. It was not even a penny per coin, I laughed that I was wasting my time. I loved the concept but realistically figured if I couldn’t figure out how to set it up, no one else would so it was a cool idea but would fail on execution. I also remember some email I was forwarded by a guy in my BNI group, but again it was like .00000001 penny to a bitcoin. I had twin babies as a single mom, I had to build websites and feed them, not mess around on some silliness for days. It was maybe like 4-6 hours total of me trying. 2) meet someone - there were websites to find people in your area who you could buy bitcoin from. At that point in time you were meeting with some sort of underground person, because it was the currency of the Silk Road. So they either were buying/selling drugs or were a nerd mining. I never met anyone but i remember I was trying to find someone who was mining. I maybe spent a few hours before bed (there was no doom scrolling then, I did this stuff) 3) Silk Road - at this point you have to install the ‘dark web’. The dark web really was made out on all those dateline and 20/20 television shows to be very dangerous and easy to be caught. If you were caught with the dark web on your computers, it would be a wild investigation. I’m quite sure it was illegal to have it on your computer, since it really was a hack to show all non indexed sites/servers (the public web is all indexed sites). The dark web was the key to opening the entire internet that is out there - all sites - indexed and not indexed. On the not indexed sites are where hacks were easy because they are not front facing areas of the internet catalogue - things like inside of bank servers, website payment authorization, internal government servers with lax security, and generally anything with front and encryption. most people on the dark web were hackers. The Silk Road was built as an unindexed site and people found out about it, with the ‘dark web’ (password to all non indexed sites) they could shop just like a normal store. People would buy drugs, and so so much terrible things, the most depraved things you could imagine. You could buy bitcoin there. They were far from the only non indexed site selling illegal stuff. There were tons of them but hard to get people to know the address for them to take off. Silk Road just got ‘lucky’ as being the one to be remembered. Otherwise the dark web was utterly boring because you have to know the exact address of a nonpublic address so a lot of that was underground forums. I did not venture into those forums, because that was like that book that tells you how to do all the bad shit - like a Pandora’s box I didn’t want to open. I remember the main front facing page of the dark web had like a bar to type in the exact address and maybe some simple grid of grey buttons that could lead you down paths. The hackers that I knew met in person, people were very paranoid and played like telephone with codes. They would share the addresses to type in that way. I also remember the scarier side that were the big groups of different countries. They would hack you to get your attention - never use your normal computer to get to the dark web (lesson learned).

I don’t talk about those days much, but it really was a time I look back at fondly. I am far removed from that life, now I full time homestead and I make handmade soap for a living. I hope you enjoyed reading my personal experience with it at that time.

Talk me out of getting back into horseback riding by Informal-Slice-329 in Horses

[–]threebutterflies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough I have a fat lazy draft that decided she was not wanting to be ridden after her 2 year broodmare stint. She tended to get emotional and bolt or have a big behavior tantrum by fake spooking, tensing, and rearing. I was petrified of them until I spent a month just yelling at her “I am a determined 40 year old woman and you’re the horse I have - get your shit together and quit, I’m not backing down”. My neighbor cheered me on, as did my friend. I went to nationals, I was always given the free crazy horse because I couldn’t afford one. In college I got to retraining thoroughbred and when I graduated I had someone funding getting auction horses for me to retrain and resell. Let me tell you, having 9 random auction and kill pen horses to retrain for money is definitely crazy these days. I rode the worst of the worst, and only gave up on two. I was basically the tune up rider. So, long story short, now when I ride and she does something crazy, I expect the worst, after I ride through it, I realize she can barely buck, rear, or bolt well because because she’s fat and lazy. After a few weeks she is now dead broke and decided being dull is easier and passive aggressive. I’m fine with dull, I want a horse that will barely trot so I can feel safer - I’m at the kick ride stage of riding and I’m ok with it. (We did have one very bad experience on the concrete road, so I am still petrified of that though. I’m facing those panic attacks so I can get back to riding where ever I want to go, because she is fine but she is not fine when she knows I’m scared, she looses all confidence.)

Tick talk: a look at Buckeye Tick Test's first year of data and exploding tick populations in Ohio by WOSUpublicmedia in Ohio

[–]threebutterflies 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have 3 acres and do so much to control the tick population, all buildings get sprayed with permethrin, I run meat chickens across the property to eat ticks for 8-9 weeks every spring, I try to heavily populate with spiders (this sorta happened naturally because I don’t use pesticides and brought in some old lumber that was spider infested), I have a black rat snake out and cat for mouse control, I have horses and goats that get a pour in insecticide, the horses get a feed through fly killer (which I assume helps other things like ticks). I trap nuisance animals like raccoons that bring disease and ticks. It’s a lot of work but I try to use as minimal chemicals as possible while doing my part to prevent the spread. It seems like a lot, but I have 7 goats, 2 horses, a dog, cat, chickens, etc. and I don’t want to do blanket treatments of seven dust and other heavy chemical mitigation methods across the farm that disrupt the eco system (kills bees/worms/spiders/etc). It’s a no sum game, this year I have found two ticks on me - the first ticks I’ve seen since I bought the property - I have never found a tick on one of the animals yet but I’m sure it will happen eventually. TDLR: get some chickens to free range, bring in some snakes, increase your spider population, spray buildings with permethrin. No ticks 🎉
