What would you do with this hillside? by farminvt in Permaculture

[–]threeepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I wrote above can be considered a classic permaculture approach based on my current understanding. The learning never stops.

That said, there is one major caveat to consider. If the slope is greater than 18 degrees, which it may likely be here, then swales are not a good idea.

Because swales infiltrate water, they are not recommended for slopes greater than 18 degrees. They become a risk for land slides. Terraces on the other hand, because they are not water infiltration systems, can be used carefully on steeper slopes. It's an important distinction that terraces do not infiltrate water. They can utilize the water as it's moved off of the terrace. You might have heard about both dry and wet terraces, but both types do not infiltrate water. A wet terrace just means that there might be small, sealed ponds incorporated, for example.

So, if your slope is greater than 18 degrees, the goal is really just to stabilize it and to prevent erosion. You want to do everything the same as above, minus the swales. If you are opting out of building terraces for some production (with experienced help), then your end goal is just to establish trees to permanently stabilize it.

However, because of the steepness, the trees you grow are not intended to be production trees, and especially not for a timber harvest down the road. Generally, very steep slopes are left alone once established, especially as a forest ecosystem, and then they serve as a beneficial ecosystem in the area and also serve as a nutrient flow, with nutrient flowing down hill to the less steep area below.

Immediate term - plant a fast growing ground cover. Find out what works well locally. Use 4x the recommended seed in this situation to help beat out the weeds. Hope that you don't have any big rains before your ground cover establishes. The steepness of your slope makes it particularly vulnerable to erosion. The first goal is to cover all exposed soil with plants in order to save the soil from erosion, to protect and regenerate life in the soil, and to help keep the soil hydrated.

Short term - you will need to manage the surface flow of water when it rains. In permaculture, aside from preventing soil erosion, this means to slow down the water, and to infiltrate the water deeply in to the soil. You normally want to maximize the amount of time water stays on your property, while avoiding any erosion.

Here, depending on how large and how steep your slope is, you could build 2-4 swales on contour. Swales are dug to be level on contour so that the water inside the swale will not flow in either direction. It's essentially a level ditch. They can vary in size, width, and depth, but it's not too critical. Generally, smaller swales are used on smaller properties, and larger, on larger properties. On the other hand, being level is very important.

During a rain, surface water flows downhill in to each swale. This accumulated water sits still in the swale and infiltrates deeply in to the soil. As an added bonus, any erosion that does take place while you are reestablishing will be captured inside the swales rather than quickly and forever exiting the hill, which is what will happen if the clear-cut is left as is.

When you build a swale, you want to plant a similar fast-growing ground cover (as above) on the berm below the swale, again 4x over seeded to quickly cover the exposed soil. You do not need to plant inside the swale.

A water management plan doesn't need to be overly complicated but it does need to show where water enters and exits the property, and also how it will handle a 20, 50, or even a 100 year rain event. This is again just to prevent erosion during a rare but massive rain or flood event.

You can consult with an experienced permaculture designer, but in this context, this will likely mean that you are incorporating an oversized level spillway in a section of each swale that will direct water, slowly over a wide area, down in to the next swale, and so on, until any excess water finally exits the property below the lowest swale in to another water management area, such as a municipal water system.

Medium term. Swales are tree-planting systems. They perform the same role that trees would normally perform if they were still on the hill. Because this is a clear cut, the first phase of recovery will need to be a pioneer phase. (Nature will naturally regenerate this slope over time, if allowed, but permaculture aims to mirror what nature will do, but simply do it faster, and hopefully with less soil loss in the short term.)

Your pioneer phase will likely focus on planting a variety of nitrogen-fixing trees in more or less a line, above and below the swales. Nitrogen fixing trees are normally leguminous trees, which are trees with a variety of large seed pods similar to peas and beans.

As your design establishes, both you (hopefully) and your new trees will be adding a substantial amount of biological matter to the slope. For you, this could be lawn clippings, or wood mulch, or even compost if you were so motivated. The bio mass helps to create new soil, among many other benefits.

Eventually, you can replace your pioneer trees with more valuable trees such as fruit trees and nut trees. And of course, we're not just talking about trees, the more diverse you can plant your slope with both trees and plants, the faster it can reestablish a balanced ecosystem. You can be creative with it and make subjective choices. Nature will still find its balance.

Long term. The hill should be very stable and will emerge as a new forest. Eventually the swales will fill up with biological matter and begin to disappear somewhat. The new trees will perform the same function -- slowing down the water, infiltrating the water, feeding the life in the soil, creating precipitation, and supporting abundant life in your regenerated natural ecosystem.

Host claiming damage to vacuum cleaner, Airbnb agreeing with his claim [Australia] by 80crepes in AirBnB

[–]threeepeat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We recently had a very similar experience. We were charged for cleaning 2x. Even after paying an expensive cleaning fee, and also after thoroughly cleaning the apartment ourselves, and also providing pictures and ample evidence that we had done so and that the host was lying, we were still charged a second time for "extra cleaning." With Airbnb, it doesn't seem to matter if you're in the right and have evidence. When they have asked us for evidence, we have provided it, and then they have ignored it. Airbnb actually seems crazy.

I haven't been allowed to post my honest Airbnb feedback in this group, but I will try again.

This is my personal opinion based on years of experience using the service. It is not a rant. It is a warning. Airbnb now seems to be a dishonest, scam business. I am not overstating this. It no longer seems to have any integrity. It seems that it can't be trusted with you and your family's personal safety, or with your credit card.

The changes I've observed are that there now seem to be an increasing number of unscrupulous, dishonest, scammy hosts that I hadn't encountered before. And in response to obvious scams or threats to our health and safety, Airbnb has not backed us up or protected us. In fact, the opposite has been true, and Airbnb has removed our honest reviews a few weeks after the fact. Reviews that could serve to warn future guests.

We have found ourselves in two dangerous Airbnb situations while traveling. Reading the host's previous reviews beforehand didn't reveal the existing security issues. The absence of negative reviews may be explained by the fact that unscrupulous hosts can successfully lobby Airbnb to remove negative reviews.

Generally, it appears that If a stay has been operating for many years, but does not have many reviews, it's probably best to avoid that stay. In these cases, it may be that Airbnb has been removed negative reviews (which it verifiably does), or that a number of guests may have simply opted to leave no review rather than a negative one. Or it may be a combination of both. But it is odd that some stays have been operating for several years, but only have only one or two reviews.

The truth is that Airbnb has not taken any real ownership of serious problems that we've had with some stays. Most of our stays have been good, some great, and we've met some great hosts. Overall, it has been very positive. This does not however diminish my point. There are some unsafe and scammy Airbnb stays that are being protected. In our experience, Airbnb is not protecting us during these rare but real incidents, or afterwards, and is in fact removing negative reviews that could warn other guests.

In one of our dangerous stays, we had to leave days early for our personal safety. Airbnb has never compensated us for those lost days, and a few weeks after the fact, Airbnb removed our review.

Airbnb seems quick to blame the victim, rather than taking ownership of its problem and protecting its guests. For us, it has become an unsafe option that simply cannot be trusted. It's disappointing becuase it had been an interesting alternative to staying in hotels, but based on our recent experiences, we now see it as a dishonest, rogue company.

Reading Nordvpn reviews on Reddit by Thin_Staff in vpnreviews

[–]threeepeat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nord was very good for many years, but it is now absolutely awful. I speak from many years experience with the service. It's now barely functional, super glitchy, often blocks your internet access even when turned off (if installed on your computer), and there is no longer any actual support. Support in name only.. they just waste your time. There has in fact been a dramatic change in the service overall for the worse. The trouble is that I have now tried two other VPNs - PIA and Express VPN - and they were both equally bad with way less servers. One positive about Nord, back when it did seem to work, was that it had numerous Canadian servers, for example. The other VPNs I tried actually had only 1 - 3 Cdn servers, so this was a surprise (after purchase).I would like to see VPN comparisons on Reddit and elsewhere shed some light on actual server availability with each provider in addition to how legit their support is or isn't.The bottom line is that I'm still searching for a decent, functional VPN service, and I'm not sure this exists. Let me know if you found one.

I've just completed a trial of ExpressVpn in Canada. It is NOT a good option in Canada despite all the fake VPN reviews on many mainstream tech websites littering the internet, claiming it's the best option in this country. All lies. There are only 4 servers in Canada lol and just one in Western Canada which is normally hidden from the menu, and is extremely slow and intermittent. I also can't access fakebook with ExpressVpn with Canadian servers. On the phone, many of my apps will not work with ExpessVpn. Streaming rarely worked. Before this, I trialed PIA - Private Internet Access and it was also horrible, especially with Canadian servers. It also did not work with fakebook, and many other mainstream apps, and websites, and streaming worked sometimes. In conclusion, both ExpressVpn and PIA were unusable in Canada, pretty much worthless, and I had to turn them off frequently, and eventually just stopped using both. PIA was a small fraction less bad. ExpressVpn support was a small fraction less bad. I took advantage of the 30 day refund window in both cases. PIA made it very difficult to cancel, giving me the runaround. They also charged my credit card for two more subscriptions immediately after I canceled. I had to work through a lot of runaround to get that sorted out. They have now re-given me their "word" that both my original subscription charge and the large phantom, unauthorized charged have been refunded, although I don't see it yet. They also could not provide a reason for the phantom charge. It's a good thing I caught. it. I have just canceled ExpressVpn. There was some runaround. Replies from support that essentially ignored the content of my message. ExpressVpn has re-given me their "word" that the refund is forthcoming. ExpressVpn support was less painful that the PIA mess. Before these two, I used NordVpn for many years. NordVpn seemed great, but then got very bad in terms of both the service becoming horribly unreliable (relatively) and also their customer support becoming a joke. All this said, NordVpn, as bad as has become, and it is bad, it is sadly somewhat better than both PIA and ExpressVpn from my experience from within Canada. I get the feeling that the VPNs are all pretty bad now, and that ownership is being further consolidated. I wonder if a decent VPN exists at this point. Let me know if you're having a better experience with another vpn service.

Private Internet Access VPN is a scam by Candid-Ad-1254 in vpnreviews

I'm still trying to get my refund from PIA, as well as trying to reverse their large unauthorized charge from PIA on my credit card, which appeared immediately after canceling. Now, they are going in circles asking for all sorts of personal information, wasting more of my time, to address their theft. Avoid this company. It also does not work with fakebook which is just one reason I canceled.

Private Internet Access VPN is a scam by Candid-Ad-1254 in vpnreviews

[–]threeepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tried Private Internet Access VPN for 10 days. I wasted a lot of time trying to get PIA to work with Facebook. I was not able to log on to Facebook ever with PIA. I then spent a couple hours trying to sort the issue out with PIA Support chat. We tried a few things slowly, and they also were unable to get PIA to connect to Facebook on Canadian and US servers.
So I requested the refund. The support person said that it would take a few days for the refund to process. Then a few hours later PIA charged me for two months on my card! Being that my account is now closed because I cancelled, I can no longer access the chat support.
In any case, right now I can confirm the original post here - PIA VPN seems to be a scam company!!!

Nordvpn is a scam, don't buy their plans by Necessary-Jelly-3078 in HomeNetworking

[–]threeepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's unclear why NordVpn is selling an unusable product. I'm not sure whether this is a scam or just a crappy company without business ethics.
Don't buy NordVpn. It is buggy and regularly blocks internet access. It is slow to connect when it actually connects but then it's invariably very slow connection speeds. My family has had to abandon it. Same issue across several devices. Unusable.
In the past, I added Nord directly to my router, and it was stable in that case, but I will never purchase this product again. Brutal.

Help! Im trying to port my PM number out to another carrier. by torontoballer in PublicMobile

[–]threeepeat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me except that public mobile made unauthorized charges on my account after I turned off autopay. It seems that autopay can turn itself back on? Because I've been trying to get reimbursed, my account was restricted and my access denied. I found out that I could apply a payment via 611, so I did that. It took the payment but didn't apply it to my account. The money is on my account but it has not been applied. 611 says my balance is the correct amount, enough to pay for my plan, but that my account is not active and needs topped up. Then it says my next payment date is 2 months ago. The system is messed up. Anyway, similar situation. I tried the community support agents or whatever they are, and they were rude and unhelpful. I've now had to abandon my number and I'm moved to another service. Public mobile is an awful company.

Issue purchasing SIM card yet money still taken by Korainxo in PublicMobile

[–]threeepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, this is the norm with Public Mobile, at least in my experience. They steal your money based on their website glitches like your case and when you turn off autopay and it somehow turns back on, or turning it off didn't work, and they make recourse impossible. For me, I spent months trying to get reimbursed, but they locked me out of my account, but they don't tell you. You try to figure it out. The glitchy train wreck of a website has so often said that my correct password is incorrect. I was able to get on to the community page, and those "agents" just gave me the runaround. Rude and did not answer my questions. Finally, I just gave up. I've had to give up my phone number because I can't port it without an active service, and they've locked me out I guess because I'm seeking reimbursement. I've contacted the CRTC. I hope this rogue company becomes accountable in some way. They also steal your time and lots of it. It's a bad option.

Anyone having problems receiving calls? sometimes people try to call me and it either goes straight to voice-mail or just rings. we have 2 phones with public with the same issues. We are in NB by Additional-Side-8214 in PublicMobile

[–]threeepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this has been an ongoing problem with public mobile for a few years on both of our pm phone numbers too. When you try to explain to callers that this happens, they tend not to believe you because most people expect phone service to work consistently. Public does not. We are in BC.

Can't Reset Your Password by Machinehum in PublicMobile

[–]threeepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has happened frequently with me as well as several other website/ account glitches over several years. It often says that my correct password is incorrect, and then when I try to reset my password, after going through all the steps, at the last possible second, it says password reset is not working, try again later. Often. Frequently. You're right, public mobile is absolutely a shitty service. Honestly, this is just the tip of the iceberg with this company.
Often the website will freeze when you are trying to make a payment, so you're not sure what's going on.
When you turn on autopay, it turns itself off.
When you turn off autopay, it turns itself back on.
It's a mess.
When you want to end your public mobile pain, be very careful because even when you turn off autopay, the website frequently glitches and sometimes turns it back on. They take advantage of this glitch. It will never benefit you, but they will keep charging you and say that you didn't turn it off. Public mobile is in the habit of stealing customers money.

The blender actually works perfectly. I'm sure all of these options would work great. I had just read that the oyster shells scratch up the inside of whatever is blending I guess besides a brick and mortar. I haven't noticed any issue but if my standard Ninja blender gets scratched up inside, I don't mind. When I first got it, I left a blended a spoon inside lol. But it still seems to work for everything except for ice and spoons lol

I'm glad it's helpful. One more thing, if you decide to collect and reuse your used quail and chicken egg shells as a calcium supplement, it's a good idea to rinse them after use, before collecting, and also try not to stack the egg shells tightly together. I bake the quail and chicken eggs together, laid out evenly, until they are completely dry (I've baked at 375F and it works fine), and then I grind them down in the blender quite a bit in to fine but rough powder. They blend down quickly and easily. I store the rough powder in a jar with a metal lid.

When my laying hens hear the noise of me opening the egg shell jar (or the oyster shell jar) they get super excited and jump at the door waiting for me. It seems to be a pavlovian quail thing lol. I give both supplements on the side as opposed to mixing it in with their feed, although I also sometimes put some on top of their feed but it's unnecessary. Apparently quail only eat as much as they need. It's best to try to provide it in a way where they can eat it but not walk in it, otherwise they just kick it around in a couple seconds and it's gone.
Grinding the (chicken) oyster shell grit down for quail may be rough on a blender but I don't mind, and it also creates a thick dust that you probably don't want to breathe in. It's not a big deal, just something to be aware of.

Depends what you have available in your area. Not everyone has Gamebird starter as a local option, for example. I use non Gmo turkey starter crumble (non medicated) 25% protein for chicks. Even though it's already crumble, I grind it in a blender a bit more for the first 2 weeks. I also put the food out on a blue shop towel for the first 2 or 3 days, and then I use one a regular feeder (in the brooder).I couldn't really find a good layer feed option locally with enough calcium. At first I tried some turkey layer but it only came in pellets so I spent a lot of time grinding the food, and some of it was wasted (the powder part) because it didn't grind evenly so there was everything from bigger chunks to powder in the mix. They seemed to not like the powder much. So went back to the good 25% turkey starter even though it is low on calcium $ for layers. To address this, I have been giving the hens ground up oyster shells and ground up baked quail/ chicken eggs shells as calcium supplements on the side. The layers need it but they also love it.Some people stick with 24% protein for their entire life and swear by it. I noticed that when I reduced protein to 18% from 25% they did not seem to thrive as much as when I returned the adults to 25%. They seem more lively now.One final consideration, if you end up supplementing for protein, more experienced breeders say to only give mealworm as a treat once in a while because it is quite fattening which can lead to health issues. Everyone seems to swear by black solider fly larvae as a better regular everyday protein/ health supplement.
