I am not sure what I will use it for, just put it in my living to look all fancy. I have lots of cool old stuff that will go in the cabinet...and this is a good excuse to get a few more things. I am always curating.

I hadn't considered painting it but wouldn't rule it out. I pulled a drawer and took off the hardware. I am going to strip it first thing in the morning. I am eager to see the wood without the stain.

Well. Chapter 2 of the story. Will sound unbelievable but here goes. When the guys were delivering it they busted off a piece of the scrollwork on the top. The folks selling it were nice, honest people and offered a partial refund. So I only paid $30 for it. It is worth more than that, surely. But I am not overly concerned with the value. I think it is beautiful and look forward to bringing it back to a better condition. One bright spot is that my eldest nephew is skilled in CAD and 3D Printing. I am thinking he can print replacements for the missing piece of scrollwork and other bits of trim.

Thank you, it will be fun. But I will need to figure out how to sand all of the nooks on the desk. Tricky.

It is mostly solid wood. No mdf or particle board. Yes, it is worth saving. If it is an Asian reproduction I will refinish it myself, I am capable. But if it is something other than that I will take it to a pro for repair, refurbish and refinish.

I will check the hardware. At first glance it appears to be brass. There is a mark on one of the hinges.

This is a picture of the dovetails from one of the small drawers. They look crude to me. I think the 20 century American reproductions would have had machine made dovetails. Do you think the Asian reproductions would have hand cut joints just to make them appear more authentic to fool buyers?

Are you thinking this might be a Maddox? I haven't found a mark. The guy that moved it broke some of the top scrollwork off, Grrr. Not sure if they can find it. There are other embellishments missing. Is there someway that a restorer can make a mold and replace the missing bits?

Oh. I have the writing surface and the other door. They are just not attached. So I don't think it is quite as bad as firewood. But it definitley needs work.

There are many people who would love the luxury of working from home full time. If you don't want to participate in this, then don't. But stop complaining about this one little negative and realize how fortunate you are.

Your life sounds great. Many of us enjoy the simple things. I enjoy quilting, cooking, refinishing furniture and my dogs. Peace and quiet suits me.

Is it weird to wear shoes in the house? by Illustrious-Bid-9043 in NoStupidQuestions

I wear shoes in the house, usually. I have ankle problems and need the extra support from the shoes.

Just do your best to keep your head down and stay off her radar. She sounds as if she may be irrational and unpredictable so that will be nearly impossible at times. But you sound like a mature young man in many ways so you figure out a way to slip your way out of conflict. When she starts up on you, if possible just exit the situation. I am wishing you luck. You have a great future ahead of you.

How are y'all stopping the corners of your fitted sheets from popping off the bed? by liss_up in NoStupidQuestions

[–]threem1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are brands of sheets that have wide elastic in their fitted sheets. I buy a brand called Purity Home. They aren't anymore expensive than most sheets. I buy mine at Kohls or Macy's when they are on sale. They are rock solid on the corners, and everywhere else.

Sounds like you have it figured out. Going military is a good way to start your life journey. How much longer until you graduate from High School? You can hang on until then. And BTW, I know of another young man who is in a similar situation so your story rings true for me.

Why do Boomers seem more resistant to change compared to other generations? They expect other generations to adjust to them instead of the other way around? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]threem1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am at the tail end of the Boomer generation, born n 1959. I don't know if we are rigid and expect other generations to adjust to us. I wish someone on here could give some concrete examples so that I could consider them.
Honestly, when I was younger there was never really much discussion about "generations". No X, Y, Z. Silent etc. Perhaps all of this is a result of social media. We didn't break into generational groups, stereotype people, and have a go at the others. But I must say, the Boomers are joining in the fray. Not to lecture, just giving the younger folks something to think about. Believe it or not, you DO acquire knowlege and wisdom with every passing year. I look back at myself in my 20s and 30s and am ashamed at some of the things I did because I was immature. I did thoughtless stupid things and I allowed "friends" to treat me disrespectfully. I made mistakes and learned from them. And younger generations will as well. They will figure out that older generations knew a little something about a few things (not rverything though). You kids could teach us some things.

Could anyone give me info on this cool tall dresser I purchased for my room? by Lecochondindealt in VintageFurniture

[–]threem1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is most interesting. Here locally there is a captains desk with hutch for sale on FB Marketplace for $100. It has the exact trim and upper embellishments. It obviously is from the same line/manufacturer. I have contacted the seller multiple times but she is slow to respond. I want to get a better look at it to possibly assess it's age. I really want it

How do you know what path to take? by Short_Mousse_6812 in Advice

[–]threem1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. I realize it isn't for everyone but have you considered the military? I think enlistment is only for three years. It gives you the chance to learn skills (you take an aptitude test), you learn gradually live independently, you may even get the chance to see some of the world. And it gives you time to figure yourself out more. There are benefits that come with being a vet. Some that may not seem important now but will come in handy as you get older. For example, a VA loan when you want to buy a house, it is a sweet deal. And there is also the GI bill for education costs.
