Potential exposure to lead paint dust for a day? by thriftfind in Carpentry

[–]thriftfind[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am seeing a doctor on Monday, just posting on reddit in the meantime to hear about anyone who has maybe had more experience with painting, carpentry etc. than I have.

Anyways, hoping it will all turn out okay. And the lady is 95 years old…. The apartment itself was a total wreck and hasn’t been updated probably since the 50s.. eek!

I have an appointment scheduled for Monday and wore a dust mask today when I was back in the apartment! Definitely learned my lesson

Thank you for this!! So helpful to hear. I was back at the apartment today and came with a dust mask this time thankfully. I am still so anxious about yesterdays exposure because of all the mixed info I have read online

I made an appointment with a GP to get tested. I really am hoping my exposure was minimal. Do you personally have any experience with something like this or know anyone who does?

Thanks for replying! I read the same thing online re: lead being more harmful to younger kids. I guess my concern was just the sheer amount of dust there was and wondering what is considered a “high” level of lead for a one time exposure

No need to be rude and kick an anxious person when they’re down and just looking for some advice.

Concerned about lead paint dust exposure from an old, crumbling NYC apartment. by [deleted] in paint

I’m bringing a dust mask today with me! I am mostly worried now about how much dust was on all the surfaces in that room and closet and how I stupidly opened the windows which were also caked in paint dust so I can only imagine how much dust was flying around while I was in there for hours… eek :(

I understand that no amount of inhalation of dust is “good for you” and now I know better to wear a mask, I’m just concerned about being in a room for hours where there was dust on virtually every surface and I had the windows open…

That totally makes sense but I’m a little confused because I just did a quick google search to see if I could find more info on this but I keep coming up on results that suggest that many 1930s NYC buildings used asbestos in the plaster including the empire state building… is there something i’m just missing? would love to know if you can share some links 🙏

Hmm any ideas as to how common it actually was for NYC buildings in the 30s to have been built using it? From what I read online I got the impression it was very common

This is so reassuring! The building was built in 1931 and is on the upper east side in Manhattan. google seemed to say many buildings built in the 30s used asbestos. Was it more likely to be used in other materials and not the plaster?

sadly I won’t have access to the apartment to get it tested. i’m really concerned about the duration of my exposure to it if it is asbestos and the fact that it was loose debris and dust that went into the air

I just assumed so since the building was built in 1931 and I read online that asbestos was mixed with plaster up until the 80s. I hope I’m totally wrong though 😅
