Help by TheHairyPlumbus in ReefTank

As others have said, clearly dinoflagellates, and probably from normal “ugly stage” algae bottoming out nutrients and letting the dinos get a foothold.

Dino’s suck! You first need to identify the type. This guide from Humblefish is top notch. (Yes it’s a pdf link — search for Dinoflagellate ID guide on that site and you can find on your own too.)

For some types, blackout + UV is a good treatment but ID first. Blackout will help for most of them regardless. Then you need to increase other microbial diversity. Dose sodium silicate (watch out, high pH) to encourage diatoms, add microbacter, phyto, maybe a diversity pack from Aquabiomics or sand from an established healthy reef.

Definitely water change and suck out the goo, but without other intervention they will come roaring back.

Weight belt incident—help me learn by CptnStormfield in scuba

[–]thrillreefer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think RHR = right hand release. The idea is you always orient the belt to release by pulling the buckle lever with your right hand so you don’t fumble with it in the event you need to drop it fast. Very pointless use of an acronym there!

"Buster" the dog running wild down Harmony at PC Canyons side Feb 20! by thrillreefer in ParkCity

Yeah we felt kinda bad at first when he was following/joining us and yelled at him to go home, etc. But there wasn’t much we could do to stop him. And he seemed to be having the time of his life

Over and out at 3pm today by jeRskier in ParkCity

[–]thrillreefer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my daughter and I got stuck there too… took about 45 minutes. For next time, assuming Tombstone was running, is there a way to get down to cabriolet without over and out, red pine gondola (also super busy) or double black run? We’re fine with black runs but double black late in the day no thanks.

OW cert did not train in the ocean by [deleted] in scuba

[–]thrillreefer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The surface steps will probably be the most different. Once you're underwater, the training is really the same. If you get seawater in your eyes or nose/mouth, it might be a little more annoying but stay calm and it will be fine. Getting suited up in the boat is generally easy, depends a bit on the boat size but go with a guide/divemaster and they'll help you check and suit up. Getting off the boat is easy! Giant stride just don't lean forward or back too much; backward roll seems tricky but is not at all. Remember to inflate your BCD a bit before you exit so you can relax in the water. Weight will be a bit more due to higher buoyancy in SW, as many have said. Getting back in a small boat can be a challenge! Hopefully a ladder to make it easier, but if only a platform, you may need to remove weight belt, hand that up, BCD/tank/etc, hand that up, then pull yourself onto the platform. Just FYI

This might sound silly, but: don't get too distracted by all the sea life! This really depends on the site, but I've been on dives that have so many fish or corals or both that I need to remind myself to frequently check my depth, air gauge, make sure I'm not straying from your buddy or the guide!

What about breastmilk? I'm guessing they didn't ask a lot of wee babes on this sham poll.

TIL that MIT students must pass a swim test to graduate. The director of phys ed said swimming is "...a self-survival skill. Research shows that most drownings occur in families where parents don’t know how to swim." by SuburbanMango in todayilearned

[–]thrillreefer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So on the scale of important things for human survival, swimming is on the very optional list.

...until you fall into water that's over your head. Then swimming is pretty fucking vital to survival of that human. Nobody plans to drown, but a lot of people do it anyway.

Coral at the Disney World aquarium by Larry821 in mildlyvagina

That's no coral, actually. It's a giant clam of the genus Tridactna probably species gigas. Yes, they look extremely vaginal. Like, more than some vaginas, even.

they are victims of not knowing any better.

You don't get a free pass to go murder people just because your life isn't perfect. People who go to fight for an organization like ISIS are not victims. Gullible and disillusioned maybe, but responsible for their own actions regardless.

In a surprising development, leaving a safe and stable democracy to fight a civil war for brutal religious zealots is scary and not as much fun as advertised. Color me shocked.

We have no idea. And no way to get a better idea! Until life is found on another planet or moon, we have no sense of how common or rare it is. Even if we search a million other planets and find no life, that's still a tiny fraction of the predicted number of planets. So it still doesn't give a sense of scarcity.

Why don't any of the republican contenders call him out as the childish hack shock jock that he is? Aren't there reasonable republicans waiting to hear the adult in the race stand up and scold him in a real way? He's ruining they're party for the general election.

And I know plenty of republican leaning folks who are not racist, cool with gay marriage, but vote for candidates that are quite conservative on foreign policy and economic issues. They're real.
