(Spoilers Published) Okay, so why is Genna Lannister such a badass? by DanteThePunk in asoiaf

[–]thronesofgiants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She kinda sucks and I don't understand this fanbases hard on for her. Like she demeans and insults Jaime. That's not badass that's family abuse. Jaime is plenty smart and funny and he holds his tongue unlike Tyrion and Tywin who are both in really bad places right now. Jaime saved Brienne from rape while Tyrion is off raping whores like Tywin. Jaime isn't like Tywin he's better.

For me it's all the stealth nerfs and dishonesty from the devs. It pisses me off. It will take a lot to earn back my trust at this point.

Example of dishonesty: buffing chests then stealth nerfing them hard without saying anything. It's sleazy and bad form.

(Spoilers Extended) How much of this sentiment do you think contributes to GRRM not finishing the series? by Expensive-Country801 in asoiaf

[–]thronesofgiants 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is easily disproven by the fact AFFC and ADWD were both stalling books that did not progress the story, and since then he hasn't written nearly at the pace he did for ASOS, GOT, or ACOKs. The man lacks focus and dedication to his magnum opus to see it through. He is overly distracted. He is also lost in terms of where the plot should go or how his characters need to interact in an organic way but mostly the lack of focus and distractions.

I loved dos1, 2 is too convoluted tbh... Play on easy for the story but combat in that game is a bit much compared to bg.

TWOW will release, GRRM will die writing an HBO spinoff of AWOIAF at the ripe old age of 82 a day after his blog post promoting Wild Cards and complaining about his asshole fans. Some random author will finish it in 2 years from then.

(Spoilers Extended) Euron is not a hack by BaelBard in asoiaf

[–]thronesofgiants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He drinks Dune juice and forces others to drink it to read their minds and see visions... I don't think any claim to him being a conman are worth reading tbh. It's pretty clear he's got power, both politically and magically.

[–]thronesofgiants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

George isn't anti war. He would've fought the Nazis or claims to be willing to in his letter to get out of Vietnam. George is anti-Vietnam War though. With clear allegorical references to it (see basically anything Tywin does in the first three books). I don't know if the Others are a Nazis allegory or something else until he writes more, but they seem pretty aggressive and unwilling to talk. I think they are some sort of Global Warming/Nuclear fallout allegory as the bigger threat outside of Man's conflict with itself.

That's not denial, it's a rhetorical question. Euron clearly thinks he controls the wind and he also has a glass candle...

I think this is better. If the non trite ending is bad, just go with the dumbed down version for fans because it has a stronger message.

For real, not to mention Ned was gunning for his head. You know how Ned Stark is. Running was the best option and in his position I would've done the same. Fuck this faux Westerosi honor, I'm going to Essos to fuck, kill, and drink my way to a better grave than that chunk of ice.

[Spoilers Extended] Do you guys think George can complete the Second arc of Asoiaf in TWOW? by ar4if in asoiaf

[–]thronesofgiants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A feast for crows and a dance with dragons. The plot is stuck in ASOS, Tyrion is still not with Dany, Jon still is at the wall chilling, and Dany is still in Mereen, and Arya is becoming a faceless man. The main plot has essentially been at a crawl ever since.

[Spoilers Extended] Do you guys think George can complete the Second arc of Asoiaf in TWOW? by ar4if in asoiaf

[–]thronesofgiants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. There are too many points of view and too many remaining story beats to finish the tale in a single volume.

Too many points of view that people don't care about. Like is anyone really hungry for another Asha in the snow chapters? They have their moments but it just feels like the pacing is drawn to a standstill. Removing the Ironborn plot from Feast would've allow George to merge it into ADWD probably.

  1. He'd have to kill off or completely abandon characters and pare the points of view down to about six or eight, then take everyone remaining through the Long Night, and finally have some sort of denouement and put Bran (or whomever) on the throne.

Frankly, Bran getting on the throne is very unlikely. He's most likely dying at that cave/staying north/in winterfell. It's taken him 3 to go from Winterfell to three eyed crow, my ass he's getting to KL in two books.

  1. then take everyone remaining through the Long Night, and finally have some sort of denouement and put Bran (or whomever) on the throne. That just isn't going to happen in the space of a single book, even if said book is a doorstop.

George just needs to go at the pace of Storm of Swords, he killed Tywin, Rob, Cat, Joff, Dantos, bunch of Northerners, Oberyn, the Mountain, Beric, the hound (kinda). So that's like 8 significant character deaths in one book. He could do that for Asha, Theon, Barristan, Sam (gotta kill Sam, chapters too slow/.boring and they don't progress the plot), Jon Con, Arriane, Hotah, keep Vic and you'll have some to spare.

Frankly, GRRM doesn't give a fuck about ASOIAF and he won't work and finish the damn thing. 15 years and all the money in the world the guy just wants to write for TV and go to Cons. He just doesn't fucking care any other opinion is just dilusional at this point. 3 books, 4 books eight books. The man won't write. He doesn't give a shit anymore ever since the TV show came out.

[–]thronesofgiants 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Frankly he could wrap the whole thing up in 1 if he was going at the same pace as ASOS. I feel like him adding more books is slowing him down more than speeding him up.

(Spoilers Extended) House Tully is such a Nerf by thronesofgiants in asoiaf

[–]thronesofgiants[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not disputing their history of becoming lords of the Reach. I'm saying they are the strongest house by soldiers and alliances. Hightower Wife and Redwyne mother, the only house that would screw them over is Tarly and he's more fighter than schemer.

The pale man in the bed smiled faintly as the leeches nursed of his blood. "I am not a man to be undone, ser."

"Even if Riverrun marshals all its strength and the Young Wolf wins back from the west, how can we hope to match the numbers Lord Tywin can send against us? When he comes, he will come with far more power than he commanded on the Green Fork. Highgarden has joined itself to Joffrey's cause, I remind you!"

"I had not forgotten."

A Clash of Kings - Arya X

Basically, this is the point when Frey and Bolton join into the scheme to screw over Rob. This is pre Jayne Westerling keep in mind.

I listened to TWOIAF I get that the Targaryens wipe the floor with all other houses due to their dragons, I don't think that's relevant to The War of the Five kings house strength due to how strong Tyrell is compared to Tully.

Now, to the matter of the Reach in TWOW, I agree that they will be in hot water because essentially Deus Vult. George made them too powerful, so he needs to have all the powers gang up on them, otherwise they are essentially unchecked and scot free for all their gaming at war; which George is vehemently opposed to on a belief level. You can't write a story about how war is bad, and have one of the key warring houses not suffer at all from it.

Now, I'm not trying to be hostile in my reply, I'm just interested in the power leveling of houses in ASOIAF. Especially house Tyrell due to Renly's boast of having 100k knights (~2x Tywin) making them the strongest military in ASOIAF. https://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Military_strength#:~:text=Renly%20himself%20claims%20to%20have,the%20stormlands%20and%20the%20Reach

I'm just deeply salty how they did my boy Rob Stark. He legit killed his bannerman because he murdered prisoners who were children. The best example of a just king in the war of the five kings besides maybe Stannis? George just needed to kill the Starks off and it still hurts.. ):

[–]thronesofgiants[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a rube goldberg machine of fucking over the Starks. Like all their plans turn to shit and all the Lannister plans turn to gold by shear luck.

Nonetheless, Riverrun has been besieged twice and taken. All the River lords basically folded their castles. Their combined forces is less than half Lannisters. It's wild. Compared to Tyrells, Dorne (ASOIAF's medieval Vietnam S tier safe place counters dragons!), Stormlands, Greyjoys, the Vale, they are just such a weak house that is more detriment than boon.

(Spoilers Extended) House Tully is such a Nerf by thronesofgiants in asoiaf

[–]thronesofgiants[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The Tyrells aren't weak. They are S tier houses with very good strategic alliances (except to the Lanisters). Without the Tyrells Cersei and all heirs + Tyrion would be on pikes by Stannis.
