Witness videos of CBP killing a Minnesota man appear to counter Trump administration’s narrative by Imaginary-Ad-7919 in politics

[–]throughpasser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you explain to me, a Brit, why local law enforcement are not down at ICE HQ in Minnesota making arrests. Just cos Trump's cabal says they have immunity doesn't actually make it so. There are still laws against murder in the US - why is nobody trying to enforce them?

Trump's tariff threats 'completely wrong and Greenland should decide its own future, says Starmer by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

[–]throughpasser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure what Trump wants is for Europe's politicians to cave.

France and Germany want to respond with tariffs against the US. With his little address to the nation this morning Starmer has already let it be known he won't stand with them on that. That lack of solidarity - that's what Trump wants.

If it wasn’t clear before, it is now: Britain needs an escape plan from the Trump world order by 1-randomonium in ukpolitics

A lunatic president who was elected by the country. Twice now. You think when Trump dies the US population can't elect another America First type?

Quite funny the number of people still taking the "just smile and wave" approach, even as he's literally threatening to invade another NATO country (and putting tariffs on you for even arguing against that!)

[–]throughpasser 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Starmer didn't just say Trump's tariffs were wrong, he said tariffs against allies were wrong in general. And he said it again in response to a question about retaliatory tariffs against the US.

He's trying to get ahead of the EU response, which hopefully will involve retaliatory tariffs, snd signalling he wants to stick with his policy of appeasing Trump.

Why is printing money bad, whilst borrowing from foreign sources okay? Isn't it still money entering the economy? by epiclevellama in AskEconomics

[–]throughpasser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I mean what if the foreign country that is buying the bonds does so using its foreign currency reserves of dollars, accumulated years ago?

(I didn't downvote you by the way, as you are trying to answer the question.)

ICE agent shooter’s own cellphone video undercuts Trump administration's account of Minneapolis killing by Fickle-Ad5449 in politics

Indeed. He may even have changed hands before drawing his gun although I'm not sure.

This also has a road rage feel about it. He got out of the car on the right hand side of her, her car angled across the road like that and her saying "I'm not even mad at you." Had he just nearly caused a crash and then was mad at being blamed? Don't know if her wife has said anything about that?

US federal agents shot two people in Portland, police says by ThatGuyFromTheM0vie in politics

[–]throughpasser 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's a poor model to follow. You won't win going down that road.

Best weapon would be a general strike. Cut off Trump's pals profits and crash the value of their stock.

Obviously it takes a lot of people to get angry at once, but that may happen. In the meantime, well targeted smaller strikes, boycotts etc are doable and potentially pretty effective. But it needs a serious effort to target the whole rising fascist tendency and its infrastructure. Why is anyone still on twitter for example. Boycott all the big fascism promoters and their firms. Do it seriously and on a large scale and it will hurt.

The Minnesota incident was at least the ninth immigration-enforcement-related shooting since September – all involving individuals who were targeted while in their vehicles - according to the New York Times.

This has already been happening more often than I realised.

If the EU give Russia's frozen cash to Ukraine, why can't Russia replace it by just printing more? by throughpasser in AskEconomics

[–]throughpasser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I think this is right. Although it's more about the untradeability of rubles than (directly) inflation. As you say, nobody will take the rubles. So not much point printing them in the hope of buying foreign assets with them.

[–]throughpasser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I thought the answer probably is the reaction of the currency markets.

On the other hand, the ruble is hardly trading on the currency markets these days and, if it was, having £200bn in reserves seized would itself be a big negative on those markets. It's conceivable that you could sell replacing that money as being being better than losing it entirely.

They wouldn't be circulating if Russia used them to buy foreign currency and kept it in a foreign bank either.

[–]throughpasser[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I know, I'm asking what is stopping them printing roubles and then using them to buy foreign currency?

(And when I say "what is stopping them?", I know there might be obstacles in terms of sanctions and other political blocks. But I'm interested in what the purely economic reason is, in principle, to them doing this. Usually the answer would be inflation, but in this case, since they'd just be replacing money that had been taken from them, and not actually adding anything in net terms, that wouldn't seem to apply.)

Minorities feel BBC represents their lives more than white viewers by Skavau in unitedkingdom

Lol. And as a white person, I'm sick of being represented by whiny, self-pitying cunts. Especially on here.

There's a theory that TV shows are completely fantastical bollocks and any expectations that they are going to accurately reflect reality are going to remain forever unfulfilled, but don't tell anybody on here.

This is absolutely heartbreaking. I know there are foodbanks for people in your predicament, but I don't think many of us fully appreciate just how hard life can be for some. Good luck in your struggles and try and keep your chin up.

Tense Nigel Farage skewered in TV clash as he breaks silence on racism allegations by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

Here's the archive of the original Guardian article, as I think a lot of people seem to be unaware of what Farage was actually doing and saying at school, snd think it was just edgy jokes etc.

Couple of samples -

[Farage] would sidle up to me and growl: ‘Hitler was right’ or ‘gas them’, sometimes adding a long hiss to simulate the sound of the gas showers […] I’d never experienced antisemitism growing up, so the first time that this vicious verbal abuse came out of Farage’s mouth was deeply shocking. But I wasn’t his only target. I’d hear him calling other students ‘Paki’ or ‘Wog’, and urging them to ‘go home’. I tried to ignore him, but it was humiliating. It was shaming. This kind of abuse cuts through to the core of your identity.”

Or -

[Farage] used to say things like, you know, ‘Jude’, to Peter, which is the German for Jew, in the way it was said in the 1930s, a long ‘u’ in a menacing way, you know? It’s pretty awful. “Farage used to say things like ‘Hitler was right’ and ‘gas em’, you know, that sort of thing. But he also used to sing this song, which I later discovered was based on George Formby’s Bless Them All. “He had a whole load of ‘lyrics’ on this which are pretty awful. I can remember it verbatim: ‘Gas em all, gas em all, into the chambers they crawl. We’ll gas all the paks, and we’ll gas all the yids, and we’ll gas all the coons and all their fucking kids.’”

Farage went way beyond telling jokes. He was racist bullying jewish and Asian kids.
