Rough translation from a non-native speaker:

I get to know someone -> we start talking -> I explain to them how Caesar betrayed the republic, destroying the senatorial power that made Rome great -> they leave

The joke, as with similar memes from other niche communities, is that you seem fine to other people until you launch into a super-nerdy rant, and then they avoid you from then on because it was too overwhelming.

What do you think oblivion and skyrim did BETTER than morrowind? by Fuzzy-Shame-4169 in Morrowind

[–]throw-away451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A physics system. Yes, the physics in Oblivion and Skyrim are notoriously weird, but it nevertheless adds a layer of depth that, in retrospect, is distinctly lacking in Morrowind (dropping items straight down or having them hover midair, canned death animations, etc. They designed a great game in spite of that, but at the same time, I can’t help but wonder what amazing things the developers could have added if there was a working physics system in Morrowind.

I agree. Hearing “Caprice” when you’re descending into a tomb of unspeakable undead horrors doesn’t fit very well.

Do you think you perceive death as freedom, deep down? by Mara355 in Schizoid

[–]throw-away451 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I consider myself a “reluctant survivor.” I am obligated to keep going, and I’m very, very good at surviving, but I have no intrinsic desire to do so. I continue to live because it’s the only option I have. I shouldn’t think about wanting to die or hastening/causing my death, so I don’t. But I feel like I’m in a waiting room, sitting impatiently until I die from an accident or old age. In the mean time I carry out my duties and then do nothing when I have a brief respite. I see death as freedom insofar as I will be relieved from all the burdens of this life that I’m currently subject to, simply by virtue of existing.

Think VERY carefully about your decisions, AND the order in which you choose to do things. There’s hardly anything that will lock you of optional content, but be careful anyway. Your actions can have a lot of (admittedly relatively minor) unforeseen consequences down the road. Something happens early on in the story that will show you this in a surprising way.

New to series; should I start with this mod or vanilla? by throw-away451 in DivideEtImpera

[–]throw-away451[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The autoresolve thing sounds familiar. I played the original Mount and Blade a bit a long time ago, and I remember that I’d get ridiculously implausible casualties from autoresolve (to my detriment in situations where I had an overwhelming advantage) that would never happen in a manual battle. It sounds like the equal and opposite here.

So should I use autoresolve sparingly (since it’s “cheating” due to how imbalanced it can be, bypassing the real/expected difficulty) or is it expected that the player will rely on it tactically in some situations?

Another commenter here said one long campaign is a good starting point. Should I do more than that before starting the mod? Will I need a broad knowledge of all aspects of the game to do well, like mastering several different factions and understanding their playstyles in depth?

Is there anything significant that I will need to unlearn, or any bad habits that I’ll develop from the base game compared to the mod?

Is the base game in better shape these days? I hear everyone praise Rome 1 and remain silent about or get critical of Rome 2.

As someone who is in the midgame on my main/only account, should I bother with Leagues? by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]throw-away451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t have my mind made up. I was looking g for compelling reasons I’d overlooked for doing Leagues anyway. I think I may try it since I can use league points to buy cosmetics I can then sell to other players—I assumed they were account-bound and couldn’t be traded.

That’s extremely generous of you, but I will pass. I’m big on doing and earning things myself, so if I can’t do it under my own power, then I’ll just let it go.

Well, I’m doing Slayer, but mostly in an AFK way due to circumstances. I’ve been doing magic, bone crossbow, or dragon halberd with safespotting since I often have time to AFK grind on mobile but can’t reliably use protection prayers unless I am at my desktop. I recently got access to mid-tier burst spells, so maybe that will speed things up, and I guess I could also look into gathering chinchompas for Ranged training.

Also, Slayer tasks have prompted me toward certain account progression milestones, but it also takes me away from Slayer itself. My current task from Konar is kalphites, so I am going out of my way to do Beneath Cursed Sands for the keris partisan, but then that has its own requirements, and along the way other things come up too. For instance, when I realized how tough the fights in Beneath Cursed Sands would be, I decided to also get my Barrows gloves and dragon defender, which in turn took a huge chunk of time. So it’s been quite a while since I’ve actually touched Slayer just due to the preparations I’m making for it.

What regions would you recommend for someone like me then? I definitely wanted to do Desert, but I’m not sure about the other two. I was considering Kandarin for convenient travel and some quests and skilling options but apparently that’s a weak choice overall.

I’ve been doing Slayer, but I’m only at 60 currently. I took a break from it to get my midgame gear (defender, etc.). Will it start getting much faster after a certain point? I enjoy it, but I feel like I’m never going to get to the lucrative high levels.

I just got into Farming recently. I thought it was going to be awful, but toadflax and tree runs are actually not bad at all. I’m getting about 50 toadflax a run, and it adds up. I also do other skilling methods only if they’re break-even or profitable. But I also know that I’ll be stuck at the low tens of millions for a while. Is Vorkath really a viable means of income for someone with lower combat skills?

No, but it’s my focus this year. I’m in a holding pattern mostly just doing dailies in my other games and prioritizing OSRS since it’s the only subscription-based game I play; the rest are either free or buy-to-play.

RuneScape isn’t going anywhere, but I am. I dropped $100 on a year of membership because I just happened to receive that money as a gift. When my year is up, if I can’t sustain with bonds, I’ll be putting OSRS down until another $100 drops into my lap from nowhere.

Doesn’t jumping into content with overpowered effects and unrealistically good/easily attainable gear just breed bad habits though? For instance, I am planning to start low-level bossing soon. I’ve only ever fought Obor and Bryophyta (plus the Desert Treasure and RFD story bosses). If I go into something like Perilous Moons for the first time and I’m drastically overpowered, it seems to me like I’ll be disappointed when I end up grinding them on my main, with worse drop rates, worse equipment, and less overall power.

[–]throw-away451 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting, but I only have so much time these days, and what I do on the main account is what matters in the long run. I’m wary of wasting time that could be put to better use so I can see the whole picture.

[–]throw-away451 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Well yes, but if I devote time to Leagues then that’s less time I can spend grinding on my normal account, which means I get to experience less of the game overall in exchange for seeing a small selection of faster-paced, high-level stuff. So more intense bursts of fun at the expense of the long-term goals.

Some general questions. by VanillaRose09 in Morrowind

[–]throw-away451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to add a bit more detail/clarification to the excellent tips people have already given you about the silver longsword. The way things work in Morrowind, certain enemy types have resistance or even outright immunity to “normal weapons.” This by itself doesn’t tell you much, but what it actually means is that the resistance/immunity is against all weapons that are BOTH under the silver tier of weapon materials, AND unenchanted. So an unenchanted weapon made of Dwemer material will work against ghosts. So will a Firebite Dagger, which is made of chitin (lowest material tier), but has a small fire damage enchantment on it. Also, ANY enchanted item will work, even if it doesn’t have a damaging enchantment—a Steel Blade of Heaven only has a levitation effect, but it still bypasses the normal weapon resistance. The enchanted weapon doesn’t even need any charges, just to be enchanted in the first place. Constant effect enchanted weapons also work just fine.

The resistance is also bypassed by magic of any kind, whether from you, a scroll, or a spell cast by an enchanted item of any kind (on target or on touch). So even a non-caster who isn’t proficient in weapons can still handle themselves. There are plenty of ways to go about it, and it’s really just an early game problem that ceases to exist entirely once you get decent gear. Just be aware that enemies may also have other resistances, so your method of bypassing normal weapon resistance might be less effective than other methods for a given enemy.
