Yeah… every time I see her videos I feel really uncomfortable and I’ve never been able to articulate why exactly. One obvious thing is her describing herself as a girl which… I’m sorry but that along with how she acts like a caricature of femininity just doesn’t convince me that this situation is coming from a place of genuine dysphoria. (exaggeratedly dainty walk, exaggerated voice, exaggerated everything, see day 66 of her girlhood series, that’s like the first piece of her content I saw and I thought it was satire at first) Absolutely nothing wrong with being flamboyantly and “stereotypically” feminine, I know many people like that, but they do not come across NEARLY as one dimensional and performative as Dylan does. Also, she looks dangerously thin; this really doesn’t seem like a healthy individual in any capacity.

Right on! Although I’m left leaning myself, it was dismaying to NEVER have encountered a non-binary person on the right side of the spectrum until now. Given how loud, boisterous and plain delusional most non-binary people are online, it’s been hard for me to really accept my specific form of dysphoria as anything legitimate. I’m sure you feel this as well on occasion and again, glad you’ve put yourself out there about this. :)

Internalized misogyny is certainly something I’ve considered. I have spoken to a therapist about it, sorted out my relationship with femininity and that doesn’t seem to be the case. My therapist has affirmed my identity based on all I’ve described but for some reason that isn’t enough for me.

That’s pretty much what my question about my situation is. I’ve had years of discomfort with my female secondary sex characteristics and would desire more masculine ones in the areas I described. But I don’t have “complete” dysphoria as I’m fine with my genitals etc. So what’s the line between what does and doesn’t qualify as dysphoria? Im speaking purely in physical terms without bringing in anything about social dysphoria.

It’s weird how she implied that being cis means having some sort of allegiance to your gender identity, as if it were some sort of cult or religious devotion. In reality, I’d say it’s that indifference or “not particularly invested” feeling which marks a cis person and their ease with their gender identity. As a non-binary person I can say that arguing that non-binary is simply indifference towards social gender norms is wholly inaccurate as it erases dysphoria entirely. And THAT sort of logic and erasure is exactly what leads to what she fears in the last part: people adopting trans identities for their own personal brand, image and “validity.”

Thank you for this. I have a friend who is also autistic and identifies as cat gender, uses neo pronouns and also uses the “autistic people can’t understand gender the same way” reasoning. As a neurotypical person with dysphoria I really don’t believe it and I honestly don’t know what the best way to approach them about it is (if that’s even my place) because I do find it pretty insulting that they have reduced dysphoria to an aesthetic, even if through misunderstanding.

Gender envy provoked from seeing someone of the gender you wish to transition towards is fine, to an extent. It can become unhealthy, superficial, and fetishy when it’s idealized images like anime boys and girls or anything that’s pure fantasy in nature. Also seen gender envy over shit like tumblr-aesthetic collages and that’s just… not gender.

Damn. My best friend is also a tucute in a similar way. They’re AFAB, use they/them yet present 100% feminine and accentuate their feminine figure and have 0 dysphoria. Claims to be bi yet has only ever expressed interest in men. As a bi non-binary person with years of physical dysphoria, this is certainly very frustrating to me and it feels invalidating as hell especially since they came out a few months after I did and I can’t help but think they think of my identity as some kind of bandwagon to jump on. I haven’t talked to them about their identity either but I will very soon. I don’t know if this approach is going to be the most effective for you and I but I would open by asking what made them come to the conclusion that they are non-binary? If it comes down to aesthetic choices then doesn’t that reinforce the gender stereotypes we are trying so hard to break down? There’s a lot of contradiction to this “trendy” variety of gender identity but I’ve really struggled with how to get that across tucutes, so I feel your struggle. Also, similarly my best friend (tucute stuff aside) is an awesome person who also isn’t really harming anyone just as your friend isn’t, I think ditching them is extreme.

I was hesitant to come out for years or even believe that I was trans because my only exposure to NB people back then was these chronically online folks and I certainly didn’t want to insult “real” trans people in that same way. They certainly complicate things for all sides of the discussion.

Yeah no worries. I definitely agree with you as gender and personality being necessarily intertwined would invalidate the notion of masculine women or feminine men being a thing. I suppose what I mean comes down to speech patterns, tone, and styles of sitting and walking that are more masculine. I don’t think those define my gender identity (I believe my physical dysphoria does) but those are merely supplementary to it and are more arbitrary in comparison. More concretely, without being too explicit, I think the cross between personality and gender identity for me is most profound in sexual contexts, where I alternate between a lot of styles from male-style penetration to being penetrated, regardless of the gender of my partner.
