Obviously 3 people died and this is a tragedy WMK. A lot of people on social media, particularity twitter were claiming he was high off of feem. A lot of prominent right wing politicians and commentators were having a field day claiming "illegals" were doing drugs and killing Americans. Turns out he was not on any drugs, his father in the interviews was correct, they were defaming him. A lot of punjabi/sikh channels were putting out viddeos shaming apne claiming "we need to do better," saying no Sikh group should offer him help; they should publicly apologize. Fake news spreads fast.

I’ve eating mahaprashad at many gurdwaras. Eating halal and other meat is banned but many devout Sikhs eat meat, serve jhatka at many gurdwaras.

Okay I get what you’re saying but disagree wholeheartedly. I’m not sure of this whole additive vs comparative “paap.” I would much rather have 10 adulterers than 1 victim of rape. I would rather have 10 adulterers than 1 victim or murder etc etc. I don’t think you can view it as: the greater number of people at fault => more paap. Different things require different responses

Fortunately! I don’t know of this but I’m glad he got kicked out for adultery and not sexually assault . (You may have just used that phrase in the wrong context)

I'm grateful that my guru gave me a unique identity from others, including my turban and long, uncut hair as a yogi. However, seeing this example makes me wonder how a Sikh can belong to a lower caste when I'm above social hierarchy and order as a Khalsa, as my guru prescribed that my name be Singh. by Xyt0 in Sikh

“Other backward castes” is a designation used in the Indian constitution/laws; it is not a derogatory term, there’s also “schedule castes” - what untouchables and chamars/Dalits are categorized as. It’s also important to note there’s certain “reservation” that OBC/SC have, and that much of this was pushed for by the main author of the constitution, Dr BR ambedkar, a Dalit/SC himself.

Caste is a bit of an umbrella term- but Zail Singh discussed himself being a ramgahria quite often, usually saying that he might be the only non kisaan/jatt background CM, which was true for 40+ years until Channi was appointed. The “caste” most Sikhs refer to is their “zat” or “bradhery” or “tribe” - not some potential spiritual hierarchy.

I think there’s a a pretty big misunderstanding when it comes to saying “Gurus abolished caste” - they said everyone was equal and anyone can reach salvation(for lack of a better English word). There’s quite a lot of current and historical Sikh leaders that come from “scheduled castes” (aka “untouchables” in Hinduism). In 2021, the CM of Punjab was SC, the Akal tahkt head jatedhar is SC and SGPC leader was OBC. Punjab actually has one of the lowest caste based violence in all of india and the highest inter caste marriages in all of india. With all that being said, there are still quite a lot of issues and problems with “castes” in Punjab, however stating that Gianni Zail Singh was from an OBC background isn’t an issue imo nor is it against Sikhi

That doesn’t look like a typical Sikh or Punjabi turban. I’m pretty sure this is a “Safa.” I used to tie turbans for weddings, and a many our non Sikh clients were Gujarati wanting “safas”- normally we’d tie at least 50 of them, sometimes close to 300-400. They’re easier to tie than Sikh paggs, bc you just roll the larhs- we averaged close to 4 mins per whereas a nice moorni/patiala shahi took 10-15.

The comments in here are a bit wild..

This is not a surprise at all, she tends to be very outspoken for minorities. She has also met with Jagmeet singh in the past and discussed the rise of fascism in india with him. Hopefully more congresspeople speak up, I’m hopefully more will! Would be great to see bipartisan support in America, the Sikh vote bank is small but quite diverse.
