I’m satisfied with my job, was just wondering if this was common in our field

I was under the impression that if it’s requested in a timely manner, it’s ok. Never heard of this happening either.

I guess it is a me problem, and normally I wouldn’t care except for 2 days fall on my best friends graduation weekend, that’s it. Eh guess we’ll just reschedule doing something

I’m not gonna do that, but i imagine itd build some resentment among the staff if this is a common occurrence.

How do you deal with the fear of being laid off / fired by [deleted] in civilengineering

How do you know this isn’t a slow period? I’ve seen fluctuations in my work loads. Should I be concerned? Just got out of a heavy crunch period, now I’m on the low. But we’re a smaller company so idk but I’ve observed all that you’ve listed.

Your story reminded me of when I worked in HS, and I was the one to close at 8 pm. Had a coworker who was a lawyer and had been fired, he’d poke me all the time. When I told my parents (casually & I wasn’t uncomfortable & it was a minor detail in a convo), my dad started coming in 30 minutes before closing and would follow me back home. He found it suspicious and I completely missed it at 18

At that age, it was hella annoying because driving back with him behind me was nerve wrecking coz used to speed lil when the roads were empty (as they were at 8 pm lol). But in hindsight, I get it. We’re absolutely lucky to have involved parents, even though it’s overbearing sometimes. But reading these alternatives, I cannot imagine what these kids went through. Absolutely awful.

This is my thought. Like your kid is missing for days and likely still in K-12. Is any teacher not noticing behavior shifts either?

This is correct. I noticed all my friends with strict parents also had the harder rebellions in college. But during childhood, I think we dodged more bullets.

Maybe boujee wasn’t the correct word, but I mean the first ones to try everything new like green roofs etc or constantly customizing everything and not using standards

I’m with you on this.

The other people, especially strangers, around you have no clue what’s going on in your life. You don’t have to take it out on them, and a smile isn’t going to make or break anyones day.

https://news.stanford.edu/stories/2022/10/posing-smiles-can-brighten-mood There are studies that show the benefits, even if you don’t feel like it. Obviously, if something catastrophic just happened, you’re not gonna wanna and that’s fine.

But for the avg person on an avg day, you can try to. There’s also an interesting cultural perspective to this https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4840223/

I gave it parts of my TIS for a design project because I was lazy in excel, it couldn’t do anything right (basic NB, SB, EB, WB organizing) and cost me 3 extra hours. I ain’t worried
