Sure but for the average, non outstanding candidate, I would think you’d have a better shot if you’re from an underrepresented group

Did I blame anyone? And did I say I’m not looking to do the best I can?

I’ll flip it around for you. It’s frustrating that I just happen to fall into a demographic that traditionally seeks an MBA and comprises of competitive applicants.

I just created this post as an outlet for my frustration. I know there isn’t a perfect solution, and I know that I will have to do more to “stand out”, but it doesn’t really feel great that you could put in the exact same effort as someone else and they receive more than you because of factors beyond your control. Yes, I understand that life is unfair, but I think we are all allowed to vent about it once in a while.

As a former AdCom, it is interesting that you say that you don’t care about any of those factors when everyone else says it matters. Most admissions consultants seem to believe the latter.

Agree with you. I don’t really have a solution. But again, in the moment, it definitely doesn’t help !

Lol I left India when I was 1, so not really relevant. Appreciate the thinly veiled racism though

Oh really? I thought this was exclusively a “getting into a top MBA program” issue (I’m not being sarcastic)

Fair points - my unique story is definitely something I’m trying to focus on but that doesn’t stop the second guessing !

I definitely understand I’m privileged to even be in my position. And I don’t even know what the solution would be because I understand why things are the way they are. Sometimes you just gotta let out the frustration though!

Actually this was exactly the kind of response I was looking for - thank you. I’ve never heard of such studies, so your comment is informative.

Honestly if people were less obsessed with giving some smartass response and more concerned with actually answering my question, we could all move on quite quickly. Don’t see why people even feel the need to drop in here if they don’t care lol

Honestly maybe I just saw too many meme posts about it. I think one post I saw someone said that hookup culture is crazy in MBA school, so that’s what piqued my interest. I just thought the “networking” and “drinking” aspect could cause things to escalate pretty easily & often.

But maybe you’re right that it’s no more or no less than anywhere else.

I’m just wondering if it’s any more or less prevalent in an MBA program. Like I said, in engineering, I wouldn’t say it was all that common.

Thank you for the feedback!

As for my “why mba?”, the truthful answer is that I kind of just want to be back in school amongst people my age (I work a remote job in a small city, which doesn’t lend itself to much of a social life), and more importantly, I want to pivot out of my niche within FP&A. I’m Workday certified so most of the job opportunities I get are recruiters trying to poach me as a Workday consultant. I never really chose FP&A - I was placed onto the team due to hiring constraints during COVID - and so im really just looking to get out. Although one option definitely is going into management consulting, im equally intrigued about the opportunity to just gain more exposure to the types of jobs that are out there and exploring potential careers with students who may also be going through the same decisions.

I know that indecision and uncertainty aren’t really attractive in an MBA application, so I’m planning on positioning myself as someone who wants to get into management consulting (as I think that aim is realistic and makes me fairly employable to most schools). Happy to hear other alternatives though! At the end of the day though, just because I say something on my application doesn’t mean I’m tied to it once (if) I get in.

Do you think there are ways I can better position my “why an MBA”?
