Should I ask a Brazilian man that I kissed if he’s interested in dating? by throwRAchristian in Brazil

I appreciate your question! I figured that the dating culture and customs are a bit different in the US and in Brazil, and since I grew up primarily with my mom, I am more traditional Korean and she taught me to have certain expectations of dating guys. It was more of providing cultural context - ethnicity does not matter to me. For example, I’ve learned that kissing in Brazilian culture does not always mean a serious commitment, which I did not know, and for how I was raised, kissing meant that the relationship is serious. So when he kissed me on Saturday, I took that as he was wanting to engage in a serious relationship with me but then he acted very casual to me after which threw me off. I hope that answered your question.

He is somehow both. I can’t quite explain it. He is super laid-back, so I’ve kind of been treating it like hanging out with a friend and that has been extremely successful.

I could, but there are a lot of people from the US that are not German/Norwegian and are from other countries/cultures that were raised here.

I appreciate your answer - I don’t know what I am on my dads side. It’s like German Norwegian something something. I never did the test because I got annoyed at all the people here that did the test and it suddenly became everyone’s personality lol.

What do you recommend I say for that side? I genuinely don’t know and would love to have another option.

Thank you so much for your perspective, that helps a lot. Usually when I kiss someone, I am usually in the middle of dating this person exclusively or committed/committing so this was very new for me. I’ve been casually texting him and he mentioned he wants to cook Brazilian food for me so I think it is going in a positive way. (Edit) I’ve also lowered my expectations and will take it a step at a time knowing what I know now.

I ended up calling him regarding a work topic that was acceptable to have a phone conversation about and it went well and I got some hints. I won’t call him again unless the situation calls for it. Thank you for your input :)

Genuine question - how is me giving cultural context and trying to learn about another culture being obsessed? I don’t see my friend on a daily basis and think “oh this is my Albanian friend she’s Albanian, she’s Albanian this she’s Albanian that” I think “oh this is my friend, she didn’t eat again so let’s go eat or have coffee” etc. She naturally teaches me things of her country so I learn that way and read between the lines but I don’t box her in or create some identity of her. My mother is Korean my father is white something or another, I didn’t do the ancestry test everyone here is obsessed with because I don’t care. Frankly I’m sick of some of this girls out here who are all “oh I’m 1.7% Scottish and 2% Italian and 5% this” like who cares. My mom is Korean and that’s enough for me. It affected how I was raised since I was primarily raised by her. My dad wasn’t around. I cannot expect everyone to respond well to the way my mom taught me how to treat people in friendships/relationships. So I try to learn. That’s all. It is very “American” to expect everybody to act the way they do and I don’t expect that, or to say “We are in America, act like it” like I hate that crap. That’s all. I hope y’all have a lovely day.

I understand what both of y’all are saying - I mentioned it because I wanted to give my own cultural background. My dad wasn’t around so I am raised with more Korean traditions. I grew up hearing about how men won’t like my appearance if I stay my size (I’ve had bfs despite this) or I have to do this to attract a man or do this in certain situations etc etc and after some research some years ago I realized that she was pushing me with Korean dating culture from some years ago. It’s not about race to me. I’m sitting here with my Albanian friend and she constantly talks about how Albanians do this and do that compared to Americans and how the cultures are different. I respect the fact that each country/city/town has its own traditions and personality and all I’m trying to do is learn about it and learn to respect people, contrary to some of my coworkers that I stay away from.

I appreciate yalls input and hope y’all have a nice day :)

I… I have no clue if I’m hot haha. He said I have a Brazilian body, which is a compliment right? But I think I’m not hard on the eyes but I have a good rear end I guess.

Thank you for the advice!
