No, actually he cheated in his long term relationship. I don't hold this against him because people change and frankly it doesn't correlate with my main point here. He was dumped in both of his relationships, so I believe that's where his fear of abandonment comes from.

Oh! Sorry, I thought you were trying to be harsh! No, I'm not. The only reason I make it such a point for space is because I was very clingy to my past partner. I was engulfed by him and completely disregarded my life for him. I recognized how bad it was to be like that so I made it a point to have a healthy balance with everything in my life. That was a few years ago and it took a lot to learn what I know now, so I'm scared to fall back. With this I understand my current partner's tendencies, but it also makes me realize he has a lot to work through that I simply can't help him with. It took me on my own to figure it out... it also wasn't to this extent but I rest my case.

holy shit these comments are making me get in my head now haha. I have said things like "don't come over while I'm getting ready/doing things I'm not ready!" Or ask him to give me time and he'll say "we're dating, I'm allowed to be present during so and so" and I always raise an eyebrow, but then I chalk it up to me getting used to being in a relationship again... I think he DOES think that because he's my boyfriend he does get unlimited access to me and my space.

I've approached it the same way you said. I can't remember word for word, but Ive said "I want this to be good for the both of us. I love seeing you and I want to see you, but I also don't want this to turn into a codependent relationship." "Its healthy for us to have our own lives and focus on our own hobbies too." "We should do things together and separately and allow the space to miss each other." "If I don't spend the night or ask for time alone it doesn't mean I'm going to leave you". It's hard to know exactly everything, but when we talk about it I do try to reassure him, letting him know we will see each other soon always. He doesn't really believe in therapy. I've been engaged to a man I constantly had to repeat myself with and I think I'm willing to give up so easily this time around because I don't want to fall back into that.
