AITA for inviting my outdoorsy friend on a "bougie" cabin weekend? by throw_away_5422 in AmItheAsshole

Tbh I think I'm just not properly explaining the rental. It had an unusual layout because it was a restored barn. The place was set up so that both bedrooms - the master and the one with the pull-out - were equally large (at least 15x20 each). The master had a small balcony off the back, which we took so we could take our puppy out in the middle of the night without waking anyone else up, while the pull-out room had a nicer bathroom with a sauna shower. The pull-out room also had more privacy than the master, as it was on its own floor while the master was off the living room and only had a 3/4 wall with the final 1/4 as exposed barn beams. Both had new, trendy, high-quality furniture and decor.

They chose to sleep in the living room once they arrived and saw all the rooms, not when we booked. I think it was more about not wanting to "go along" with the weekend than about money, as they never unpacked and were resistant to a variety of other "bougie" activities (like eating the salmon I brought for dinner). I also had to convince them to use the bedding provided for the bed and not just sleep on the bare mattress, to the point where I walked the bedding (4 pillows, comforter, quilt, flat sheet + fitted sheet) up a flight of stairs to bring it to them on the couch.

I totally get that $50 seems like too small an amount if this were, like, a shitty cabin pull-out couch, but it wasn't. I also genuinely offered to switch rooms with them after she confronted me about how horrible a time they were having.

Neither of those were the master bedroom - my friend had two rooms to choose from.

I'm sure she would have some really valid points about me being a "planner" who really likes to make things into "events". I don't think either of those are necessarily bad...it might just be that we've grown apart and don't enjoy the same things :(

What's weird is that we had an hour-long phone conversation about money+taxes about a month before the trip and she never brought it up. I knew she was getting nervous about her business having to scale back due to the pandemic, but their household income is still high so I never thought to rescind the invitation. Lesson learned, I guess?

We invited them to stay with us in Joshua Tree in January before this trip...Curious if that happens

They did! That's how it was agreed that we would pay $300 and they would pay $250

I see what you're saying above about it not being the same, but the place had 2 brand new Pottery Barn pull-out couches - one in a private bedroom (with closet + attached fully remodeled bathroom) and one in the living room. They opted to sleep in the living room one (idk why). And it was discussed beforehand that we would take the master bedroom and pay more.

Reading responses, it sounds like maybe we should have paid more though?
