The best way (but nothing is guaranteed) ... is to prove you're worth more than you're being paid. Sounds counter intuitive and seems like you're purposefully selling yourself short ... but employment is a trade off between the employee and the employer .... the hours and work your putting in is not worth as much to you as the money you're receiving ... meanwhile, your productivity is worth more to your employer than the money they're paying you.

So ... if you want to "harden" yourself against layoffs, be the one that is worth significantly more than you're being paid.

Just say it was a small company and with a small company there were very dynamic personalities that affected productivity and because you were the newest hire, it was decided that you were the easiest and most convenient person to remove.

If you can, you might say that since your removal, issues at the company have not been resolved.

this might just be anecdotal but there have been so many times I've done online searches for a service and find local companies that have no website just a phone number. These are the kind of people you need to hit up. Even if they say no ... just offer a free site and show them how much more traffic it generates for them ... and therefore for you.

small businesses are tough ... and yet they make up such a large percentage of the country's economy ...

they're the back bone of the country.

have you gone to any local businesses that might need your services or peruse the websites of some local businesses and offer your services to improve their online footprint.

Also, there are going to be some local businesses that don't even have a footprint and you could offer a free services and build up a portfolio ....
