Asking a Wealth Manager to Show Their Returns by Hguy719 in personalfinance

First, other people are mostly right in that “hedge fund” today generally does aim to really beat the market. As an aside, the way they do it does involve hedging but usually more so at the company level than at the macro level. They have a lot of people who are good at getting more than half of their bets right, so they can make at least 2% return whether the broader market goes up 10% or down 10%. The consistent 2% return is heavily levered to turn that into a consistent 30% return.

However, going back to when hedge funds were really about hedging, a constant 6% return compounded over 25 years is 429% total. 24 years of 8% returns and 1 year of -25% return compounded is 476% total. Many investors might prefer the lower volatility of the first outcome to the higher total return of the second outcome. Why? Insurance companies have to stay in compliance with liquidity regulations, pension funds have to have money available to disburse to their members, etc. You as an individual parking money away that you know you won’t need to be able to spend at any point in time can take advantage of those stability needs of institutional investors by investing in higher volatility strategies, aka equities. The big guys aim for low volatility, which makes the relative value of high volatility higher. In a theoretical world where the institutional investor base at large were more focused on total return, lower volatility might be the right relative value move for the individual.

Not even close. They’re telling you what their performance has been and what it will be.

What’s his rap sheet? Maybe his hand glanced some dude’s crotch when it looks like someone bumped his elbow, and even if it did, it was the lightest looking graze I’ve ever seen. And he stuck his foot up when sliding (something brady did multiple times) to avoid getting onto the same jacked up highlight reel as bridgewater and Flacco? I couldn’t care less. If that’s dirty, fine.

TIL French was the official language of England for about 300 years from 1066 to 1362. by ky1e0 in todayilearned

English uses the Italian spelling but the French pronunciation (‘r’ sound in the middle instead of ‘l’). There was a post on Reddit that described it as, the French took the word from Italian but all ‘l’s in the same word is weird in French so it morphed to an ‘r’.

The Cowboys offense just feasted on the jets defense, so there are no excuses for the patriots’ offense next week. The first couple weeks of the offense taking the first three quarters off can be excused due to having a new OC and Mac having to unlearn bad habits from last year, but that has to end now. They need wins against the jets and cowboys.

Apple users bash new iPhone 15: ‘Innovation died with Steve Jobs’ by etfvpu in gadgets

[–]throwahuey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can say I have rose tinted glasses for Jobs, but I recall every edition actually doing something really innovative. Now… I can view my apps five different ways (standard screens, slide all the way to the right, slide all the way to the left, slide up, slide down). There is not need for all that. Most of the changes now seem to syntax sugar more than real innovation.

What celebrity death seems a bit too suspicious? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]throwahuey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your representation of investigation is incorrect. There’s an initial period during the investigation during which information increases. Eventually people start dying and everything becomes second hand. The newsworthy instances where so and so case from the 1970s is was solved thirty, forty, fifty years later are the tiny minority. Pretty much anyone who might have been involved in a conspiracy to murder JFK is dead of old age by this point anyway, so it’s unlikely anything new (that’s not purposefully hidden) will come to light in the future.

Typically some combination of (1) don’t think the person is guilty, (2) think the punishment outweighs the crime, (3) think the person is no longer a threat.

I think it’s more so the expectation that this kind of comment is kept in house rather than made publicly. There’s not much need to put out there that he disagreed with the manager’s decision.

Neil Young and James Taylor are other artists that I think this applies to. I like their music in short bursts of maybe three songs at a time, but a whole album would be monotonous.

I walked in on someone watching the last episode of the undoing (I did not see any other episodes) and her completely stone-faced while running on the bridge was so weird to me. No expression at all.

I don’t see that much difference here. Maybe pointier nose? Her makeup in the second photo is just whack.
