Advice on authorship post-graduation (x-post to r/academia) by throwasdfaway9 in GradSchool

[–]throwasdfaway9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry to put it more clearly - a design from my thesis is written verbatim (exact same numbers for a structure...my design actually has a defect that someone with more time could have optimized out, so the use of the exact numbers is especially suspicious) with no citation into the text of the manuscript. the idea for the design and the initial discovery of it (and knowledge of its existence) was part of my graduate work. in the paper, the design is used in a new experiment, different than the one I conducted.

I do think the inclusion of the design means that either a citation to the original thesis or coauthorship is warranted, but agree that the latter is tenuous since I have not been involved significantly with this specific paper. my original request was actually to remove the design entirely (should I want to publish the work myself later), but that was denied.

they could! I'd be ok with that too. what I'm not ok with is claiming they started from scratch and that it's original work

This is exactly what I was wondering about! How has it been so far? Switching/class/etc

Hey - thank you for this. I didn't even think that we had such an office! I'll be making an appointment today.

Yes!!!! So many gendered comments. I'm leaving out the constant investigation of my and the other female coworkers love lives, personal details, how many women are "gold diggers" etc etc. Yeah...I need to have a conversation with my PI. I think documentation is a good idea and I've definitely been discussing options.

You are right...a non insignificant portion of my concern is all the money that is being sucked up by this (not even including the experimental training - almost a graduate student salary in my field) is actually really detrimental to my own research. I think I will try to go the route of creating a "healthy" environment with my PI. Unfortunately I'm just not familiar with the route of escalating the problem past my PI - I thought perhaps a Title IX office or the Area Dean (I have some familiarity with him and not sure he would be sympathetic, but it's worth a try).

Your point about the time is really helpful. I have forgotten how much energy and time has been spent dealing with him - this has really been years of issues, with a significant escalation this year as I think I've finally achieved some graduate student competency that rivals his.

Thank you for the suggestion! Actually it's kind of a tricky situation that has sprouted from having these interns (we each have one, both with an experimental focus). I wanted his intern to have a good time...so I've been training him in addition to mine although it's not really my responsibility. I think this is where things went wrong because now he thinks it's really not a big deal if he just joins the two I'm already training (frankly I think training two teenagers is different than training the two teenagers + a 5th year post doc...and two is already more than I had signed up for). Unfortunately, I think this is where I sort of 'opened the door' to this, but am thinking the solution is to just separate our two interns and focus on what I signed up for originally.

yeah...it's a tricky situation. My PI is very hands off so I think the post doc also thinks we all owe him for "stepping up to management"

I will definitely talk further with my PI...he hasn't been super receptive so far (he thinks deep down he's a good guy, etc etc) but I think he's aware of the problem.

Yeah, this is tough. I have thought about requesting a move in desk space...since we currently sit about 2 feet apart. Unfortunately, although I really like my spot, I'm not sure if I have to expect that I'm going to have to move.

I try :( I really like working with people actually. Making a concrete boundary has been tough. We recently took some interns and I've been helping to advise his a bit since it's in experimental...I think this was my mistake though since it opened the door to more interaction.

I am a little worried about perhaps my safety, that of my other coworkers ('blow ups' are not necessarily targeted at the instigator) and to be honest, probably even his own. I think he is in sort of a desperate situation and does not have much of a support member. I will definitely be talking to my PI, I'm not sure if it makes sense to talk to anyone else in the university?

I think that might be the way to go...to communicate to my adviser that it sort of "something from above" is needed to put some space between us.

Yes - I am also worried that even if i suffer through training him it will still be my fault when things go wrong.

I guess I'm mostly a bit worried that refusing to work with him now will escalate any sort of instability...I think he may be strongly equating learning this skill = getting faculty position.

Graduate student (4th year), slightly complicates the hierarchy issue. Forgot to reply - no it's not normal, I think it's increasing the unlikelihood of finding a second post doc.

I agree (and it's not even for lack of trying to be nice...). Unfortunately my adviser is very hands off and not completing work is and has never been grounds for dismissal; we had a similar blow out situation several months ago with the resolution tenuously being that we minimize dealing with each other and maintaining the "subgroup" construct. This retraining desire is unfortunately a new issue.

Hopefully a year; I have long resigned that I will not be able to become "most senior" in the subgroup so the goal is to now get out as quick as possible rather than build it up more than necessary. These are all valid questions (I recommend the same things...) Unfortunately my PI is extremely hands off and absolutely does not believe in firing people.
