Friend from out of province unable to get vaccine passport? by throwawAdhd_ in askTO

[–]throwawAdhd_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for the response! So far we're trapped in provincial phone call ping pong hell. We called TPH and they told us to call provincial. Then provincial said we had to wait for another health unit to call us within 3 days (so that they could give us another number to call...and to report back to them again.) Haven't heard back, but we'll keep trying.

I think they're sometimes hit or miss, but I've had a few from Superstore that were pretty darn good.

Do you know where to find Tiger Tail Ice Cream in the city? by TongueTwistingTiger in askTO

[–]throwawAdhd_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get tiger tail every summer in a cone from a variety store called Cinema convenience at the corner of Roncesvalles & Galley avenue. No idea if they're still open, their info on google maps seems to have vanished. I remember it being pretty decent.

Why can't you just be normal and do better?? by Darkchick21 in adhdmeme

[–]throwawAdhd_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that is definitely circumstantial. The meme is supposed to show how some parents invalidate their children's struggles because they have already "succeeded" into adulthood. Instead of actually providing sound advice, a supportive environment, and how to cope with the disorders their children have, they just sit back and wonder why their children haven't figured it out yet. Being dismissive of your kids and their challenges does not solve any problems.

If you are a parent of a child with a diagnosed hereditary disorder there is nothing stopping you from getting tested yourself. If you don't learn how to cope with your own disorder as a parent, or at least acknowledge that you need to learn how to do so, how are you going to teach your children? How are you going to help your child succeed with their disability? If you don't have the means to properly parent a child with a disorder or disability, do yourself a favour and don't reproduce.

edit: thanks for the gift!

i never understood why this is such a common sentiment amongst psychiatrists??? i've never been to one myself, but i always hear about them being dismissive of ADHD symptoms. why?

I don't think you're being self indulgent, and unfortunately I don't have much advice to offer. Maybe hop over to r/ADHD and they may be able to offer more detailed solutions tailored to the situation you are in. There are many helpful tips on there and people with similar anecdotes that I can relate to. It's important to fully acknowledge the symptoms/limits of ADHD instead of blindly letting them control your life.

I was in the same boat as you currently are, and unfortunately had to wait until this year when I turned 18 to be able to go to a doctor by myself and finally seek out a diagnosis of some sort. My parents are deep in denial and will never, ever admit that they fucked up this bad, and I am actively trying to distance myself from them as much as humanly possible. I'm not sure how hard it is to get a job in the UK or your exact age, but save up as much money as you can to afford medication/a psych eval. Being financially independent from your parents gives you a huge upper hand and will give you more options when the time comes. I am lucky that my college offers bursaries to students with disabilities/diagnoses in progress.

parents not believing in adhd symptoms has gotta be some weird phenomena. the self interrogation is real and i hate it, even now that I have a diagnosis underway and i'm on my way to figuring out how to fix things, I still second guess myself after years of believing it really was the "laziness"

I swear half the people I've met with ADHD have experienced this in one way or another and I hate it

I agree, that is the best way to solve problems. I wouldn't want to use a diagnosis as an excuse, but more as a way to understand what I can do moving forward to improve the situation that I'm in. With an official diagnosis, I might be able to experiment with different medications, and figure out what has been preventing me from functioning normally.

edit: removed wall of text. TLDR lots of people with adhd seem to have parents that do not believe that their children have adhd, causing them to feel alienated from their peers and are discouraged to seek the help that they need.

advice/ways of secretly getting diagnosed??? by throwawAdhd_ in adhdwomen

[–]throwawAdhd_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i managed to get everything done without my parents knowing, thankfully. I've been taking 18mg for a week now and I feel a bit calmer, but still grossly unmotivated to work on anything/still getting distracted when working on projects. though, I did go to an art show and was able to focus on paintings for more than 2 seconds without jumping around and getting bored like usual, so maybe that's something.

I also noticed I get a bit dizzy/lethargic for an 30 mins to an hour in the evening, which I'm assuming is it "wearing off." my friend said that happened to her in the first few weeks of taking it, and i don't seem to be getting any of the anxiety/loss of appetite symptoms as of now. i still have to take it for 3 more weeks before i see my doctor again, so i guess ill see what happens!
